The disappointing thing about this is in order to win a flag, you must first make a Grand Final. In 2008, I'm pretty sure in my mind we wouldn't have even been there had it not been for Buddy's incredible season. However, he was quiet in the GF, as a lot of champions often are for some reason. (i.e. Wayne Carey).

This criteria would automatically disqualify Buddy from the team, which would be disappointing.
agreed. i still rate Willo as our best forward for that entire finals series though. buddy killed the dogs, but Willo was the most consistent. pity that THAT Willo stopped playing for us. its a real shame as an on Willo was amazing for his size and build.

It is in a way, but then that's what makes it interesting.

I don't think Hudson would make this side either based on the one GF he played in (admittedly he was only semi conscious for most of the game).

But even leaving out two of your greatest ever forwards you still have a ridiculously potent forward line.

So dam hard!

My team:
Ayres, Langford, Collins
Green, Mew, Tuck
Eade, Wallace, Dipper
Pritchard, Brereton, Buddy
Bucks, Dunstall, Matthews
Rucks Scott, Platten, Crawf
Int: Kennedy Jnr, Hodge, Knights, G Dear
Em: Hudson,Moore, Jarman

My reasoning was number of GF's and impact on GF, longevity etc. I put Jarman in mainly due to his GF for Crows and the impact. Need to find spots for Peter Crimmins, Hendrie, Arthur and Anderson (?).

Too dam hard this!

You have no idea how aggrieved I am to agree with you.

If TAITA’s idea is to be accepted, then the great one does not make the team.

Just off the top of my head the following should be considered

1971
Scott
Moore
Meagher
Crimmins
Keddie (‘though I am not keen on cameos)
Parkin

1976
Knights
Hendrie
Rowlings
Geoff Ablett
Eade
Still trying to remember – must read Rusty’s 76 grand final story

1978
I always thought this to be the Granny of the stars
Mathews
Martello
Knights
Moncrief
Scott
Paton
Wallace

1983
Kennedy jnr
Robertson
Mathews
Wallace

Now it is impossible. An extravaganza of stars.

Which year was it that Pritchard tore it up?

08
Hodge

I will never work this one out. But, I am going to push for Meagher Rowlings Pritchard as the centre line.

Thought I'd do St.Kilda's to take a break from ours

St Kilda
B: Rodger Head Robert Murray Brian Sierakowski
HB: Verdun Howel Ian Synman John Bingley
C: Jeff Moran Ian Stewart Jim Read
HF: Ian Cooper Darrel Baldock (c) Barry Breen
F: Alan Morrow Kevin Neale Allan Davis
Foll: Brian Mynott Daryl Griffiths Ross Smith
Interchange Travis Payze Kevin Billing
Coach: Allan Jeans

Ran out of players to fill the rest of the bench and emergencies!

Please Hawks members, don't make it a side of your favourite current players combined with the 80s legends. The whole idea is to watch all the GFs and make a decision then. Moncrieff was a big game player, kicking 4 in 1978. He's in.[/QUOTE]

I don't think it really matters, does it? It's supposed to be every members personal opinion, no right or wrong answers, isn't that the whole idea? So if someone's personal opinion is only based what they've seen, they're more than entitled to choose anyone, even if that's soley players in the past 20 years...

Personally, I'd prob have quite a few '80's players in there. Dermie, Dipper, Dunstall, to name a few straight up. As well as Huddo, Scotty, Lethal.

Hmmm, this is pretty hard.

I will narrow mine down ...

1961 - Mort, Browne, Edwards (BOG), Law, Arthur
1971 - Keddie (won the game for us - down by 20 points at 3/4 time), Crimmins, Moore
1976 - Knights, Scott, Eade, Ablett, Matthews, Hendrie, Moncrieff, Rowlings
1978 - Knights, Matthews, Moncrieff, Scott, Dipierdomenico, Moore
1983 - Kennedy, Robertson, Matthews, Knights, Eade, Mew, Schwab, Wallace, Tuck, Greene
1986 - Eade, Ayres, Langford, Curran, Platten, Brereton, Dunstall, Mew, Wallace, Russo, Schwab, Buckenara, Loveridge
1988 - Abbott, Dunstall, Ayres, Buckenara, Mew, Brereton, Morrissey, Platten, Dipierdomenico, Collins, Hall, Schwab, Greene
1989 - Pritchard, Dunstall, Brereton, Collins, Dipierdomenico, Buckenara, Curran, Condon, Anderson, G.Dear, Tuck
1991 - Lawrence, P.Dear, Morrissey, Platten, Pritchard, Mew, Condon, Gowers, Brereton, Ayres, Dunstall
2008 - Hodge, Sewell, Osborne, Dew, Williams, Ellis, Crawford, Birchall, Guerra, Young, Rioli, Gilham, Lewis

... still no closer to formulating a team though ... some of the guys on the bench .. tough.

Pretty good getting down to that No. Ram-Man - I would add Tony Hall, Ben Allan and Darren Jarman to the list just to add to the confusion:thumbsu:

EDIT - Reread your list - you have Hall in your list - sorry
I am going purely on performances on the GF day ... Allan had a marvellous 1991 but his GF day, while good, was not as solid as Condon, Gowers, Pritch or the rat's ... I was Jarman the barman's biggest fan but he had a tough day at the office in 1991 GF .. as did Hally ... both of whom ended on the bench at games end.

We don't know for sure if it is about performances on Grand Final day, or about a team of our greatest premiership players. For mine, the following are definate inclusions.

Backs: Langford, Mew, Moore, Ayres, Knights - Its tall, but you couldnt deny any of these blokes. I guess one could be on the bench maybe.

Mids / Ruck Scott, Tuck, Matthews, Dipper, Edwards, Eade, Platten

Forwards: Dunstall, Brereton, Buckenara

Utilities: Kennedy Jnr (Back / forward)

All of those blokes I think will make it. Then the criteria really comes into it. Take the great Huddo. Injuries killed him when it came to premierships. Only played in 1971 and by his standards had an average game of only kicking 3 goals. Missed 76 and the losing 75 through injury, and we missed out in 77, his comeback year. He then retired so missed 78. So does he make it on overall form, or miss out due to a lack of premiership success?

Then there are the blokes who had huge grand finals, maybe without multiple successes. Paul Dear, Stuart Dew, Brendan Edwards, Luke Hodge, Colin Robertson, Bob Keddie, etc

Looking forward to the site opening so I can start playing around with it.

I like the idea of players who contributed to winning the match on the day ... otherwise it becomes another 'best of' team which has been done to death.

Shouldn't the site be open by now ? When is the eta ?

Due to our large amount of success, having the criteria as anyone that has played in a premiership would only eliminate 4 players from our team of the century. Col Austen, Jim Bohan, Albert Mills and Roy Simmonds (who missed selection in 61).

Pretty pointless exercise in that case, so I think it should be based on Premiership winning performances, and also obviously those that played in multiple premierships. If thats the case will anyone have the guts to leave Huddo out?

Being a modern-day boy, I'll start with Dermie, Dipper, Ayres and Hodge. P Dear must be at least interchange. Rat first rover. Matthews in the midfield or forward?

Hmmm... may need to research some of the older lads.

Think my backline will look like this

Langford Moore Ayres
Knights Mew Hodge

Big, tall and tough, and while there is no one there to really look after a small forward, no small forward would be brave enough to cross the 50! If there was one, I would just switch Hodgey or Ayres up the ground to bring my small defender in from somewhere else.

Looking at the web page and reading the paragraph on each player my take on it is that we are supposed to base the team on GF performance:confused: I love the idea that someone like Paul Abbott could make the team ahead of Peter Hudson:eek:

How easy would this competition be if we had to select a St Kilda or Western Bulldogs ultimate premiership side:p

Not that easy, as I demonstrated above somewhere, its impossible, they haven't got enough players to fill all four interchange positions. Perhaps they would be allowed to list players that played with them and won premierships elsewhere!
