I know it would be sacrilegious for a Hawthorn supporter to suggest anyone other than John Kennedy Snr as coach of this side, but considering i'm a Geelong supporter i'll put this forward.

Allan Jeans coached the club to arguably the best decade of footy by a single club in the history of the game. His passing is a timely reminder of his impressive record.

It's no surprise you guys have had this dominant 50 year period when you consider you've had three of the best 10 coaches in the history of the game pulling the strings.

I think most of these fellows could qualify and if premierships won is a consideration at all, most of the 2008 team are probably not going to make it.
I have an inkling Stewie will not get a gig :p

Due to our large amount of success, having the criteria as anyone that has played in a premiership would only eliminate 4 players from our team of the century. Col Austen, Jim Bohan, Albert Mills and Roy Simmonds (who missed selection in 61).

Pretty pointless exercise in that case, so I think it should be based on Premiership winning performances, and also obviously those that played in multiple premierships. If thats the case will anyone have the guts to leave Huddo out?
I think I will leave Hudson out

Certainly number of Flags should come into it however I do not feel it should outweigh contribution on the day. I feel if a player had a major influence on winning Hawthorn a Premiership on the day this should be a huge factor - as should winning it off your own boot - as Dew did for us in 2008.

Team and in brackets Premiership Days that the player made a significant contribution.

B: Ayres (83,86,88,89,91) Moore (71,76,78) Hodge (08)
HB: Morrissey (88,89,91) Mew (83,86,88,89,91) Knights (76,78,83)
C: Eade (76,78,83,86) Wallace (78,83,86) Dipierdomenico (78,86,88,89)
HF: P.Dear (91) Brereton (86,88,89,91) Buckenara (86,88,89)
F: Matthews (71,76,78,83) Dunstall (86,88,89,91) Keddie (71)
Foll: Scott (71,76,78) Tuck (76,78,83,86,88,89,91) Platten (86,88,91)
Int: Kennedy (83,86,88) Dew (08) Pritchard (88,89,91) Edwards (61)
Emerg: Condon (89,91) Lawrence (91) Schwab (83,86,88)
Coach: Jeans (83,86,89)
Captain: Matthews

Difficult to leave out ... Anderson, Collins, Browne, Law, Crimmins, G.Dear ... very difficult task.

^^^ Sorry, but you can't leave Andy Collins out and have Stewie Dew on the bench.
One a 3 time premiership hero and legend of the club (212 games) for a bit player who played 26 games.
It will never happen.
This is all debatable and opinion based of course, and comparisons are odious ... but this is an ultimate premiership team ... and I did preface by saying my team would be major contribution on the day ... Stuart Dew's third quarter of the 2008, along with Dermie getting up in 1989, and Dippers immense courage in 1989 are the three greatest Grand Final moments for me ... therefore I can't leave Dew out.

I am a huge Andy Collins fan, to the extent I wore 40 on my back for a few years ... but if I have the choice of who I want to come off the bench to win me a premiership .... Dew ... if Stuart Dew had not played in 2008 it is questionable whether we win the game.

Andy Collins played in three premierships contributed well in 88 & 91 (where he came off the bench) - his input into 1989 cannot be questioned he was a champ ! Would we have won without him -- maybe not, did he win it off his own boot ? No.

Andy will tell you himself he got the maximum out of his ability and that is what sport should be about -- getting the maximum out of what you have to offer ... but as for talent Dew v Collins ?? - Dew wins hands down.

very close to what i'd have Ram-Man. only changes i'd make would be to have Collins in the back pocket, Langford at fullback, Moore on the back flank (replacing Morrissey), Hodge to replace Pritchard on the bench; and get rid of Condon and Lawrence to be replaced by Anderson and Greene as emergencies

I think i would have to cheat and have an extended interchange bench - say 12 players.

being in my twenties i missed most of the premierships, but heres my best crack at it.
Need to grab yourself a grand final box set and have a look at some of the games you missed. No doubt everyone in that list can play, but there are some obvious exclusions that will be certainties.

1. A bloke called Michael tuck played a few games for us and won a few flags, he'll get in.

Dipper and bucky have to be on the wing and HFF respectively. They are ahead of some guys you have on the ground.

Players you picked but I dont think should make it

Franklin (Didn't do enough in the grand final to be ahead of others)
Mitchell (His GF was OK after half time, not ahead of Edwards, Wallace, Pritchard etc)
Crimmins (Legend, he is a huge part of our history, but others have better claims as players IMO)
Jarman (his one GF for us was average at best)
Hudson (as good as he was, his GF record is not great).
Crawford (similar to all above)

I concede however that Hudson, Franklin and Crawford may well get in due to the young slant on the voting.

Anyhow, just my opinion, its yours to pick obviously. You gotta get Tuck in there though!

Hi all

Slow work day so great chance to complete first post with my ultimate premiership side. Have been fortunate enough to witness most of the flags so here goes:

B: Parkin Moore Ayres
HB: Knights Mew Hodge
C: Eade Wallace Dipierdomenico
HF: Buckenara Brereton J. Kennedy Jnr
F: Platten Dunstall P. Dear
R: Scott Tuck Matthews (c)
I/C: Greene Morrissey Langford Pritchard
Emerg: Anderson Collins G. Dear
Coach: Allan "the Jeanius" Jeans

From the remaining squad you can form a very handy side:

B: Douge Bussell Schwab
HB: Bremner Croad O'Halloran
C: Robertson Edwards Geoff Ablett
HF: Hall Martello Hendrie
F: Moncrieff Peter Hudson Keddie
R: Winneke Crawford Crimmins (c)
I/C: Condon Dew Franklin Paton
Emerg: Curran Law McCarthy
Coach: John Kennedy snr

tough backline, heaps of speed across the middle and on the ball, and some great lead up targets. Plus master vs. apprentice in Brereton vs. Croad.

anyway back to reality....

Brendan Edwards had something like 30 to 38 kicks (no one's really sure) and 3 handballs in the '61 flag - he's a lock for the centre for mine.

Speaking of '61, it hasn't really been spruiked on here much, but this is the 50th anniversary of our first premiership.

There will be a reunion later in the season, and also a book and DVD coming out to celebrate it - save your bickies because this will be essential to the supporter who wants to know where we came from.
Agree TAITA, Wallace was not in the same class as Edwards, I thought it was 33 kicks, and that was long before the cheap gets players receive today. I would also have Arther somewhere in the side. He is the Hawthorn player Luke Hodge mostly reminds me of. Both great favourites of mine.:)

FB: Gary Ayres - Chris Langford - Kelvin Moore
HB: Luke Hodge - Chris Mew - Peter Knights
C: Rodney Eade - Brendan Edwards - Robert DiPierdomenico
HF: Gary Buckenara - Dermott Brereton - John Hendrie
FF: Leigh Matthews - Jason Dunstall - Paul Dear
FOLL: Don Scott - Michael Tuck - John Platten
INT: Graham Arthur, Colin Robertson, John Kennedy Jnr, Stuart Dew
EMG: David Parkin, Bob Keddie, Peter Crimmins
Coach: John Kennedy Snr

Apologies to: Jeans, Law, Moncrieff, Wallace, Greene, Abbott, Pritchard, Anderson, Lawrence, Sewell.

Hard to leave out our first premiership captain Arthur for Law. Parkin is the only man to win a Hawthorn flag as a player (as captain no less) and as coach. Crimmins was great in '71, but (and I know this is a reason from left field) may have won the '76 flag for Hawthorn without taking the field.

Awesome feedback mate, will definately watch the past premierships. I concede Franklin didnt have a big impact but he kicked three goals all in crucial moments and his presence definately denied Geelongs run. But yeah from what other people are saying there are people in front of him.

Just picked mine so came searching here to see if there was a thread on it:

B: Collins, Langford, Ayres
HB: Kennedy, Knights, Hodge
C: DiPierdomenico, Greene, Eade
HF: Buckenara, Brereton, Dew
F: Matthews, Dunstall, Rioli
FOLL: Scott, Tuck, Platten
INT: Hudson, Franklin, Prichard, Mew
EM: Loveridge, Mitchell, Wallace

Probably hit submit too early. In hindsight, and I haven't started to read this thread yet, I'd take Franklin our and put Dean Anderson in. I just wanted Buddy in my Jamie Cooper print though.

Here I go

B: Ayres, Langford, Parkin
HB: Greene, Mew, Collins
C: Eade, Wallace, Dipper
HF: Buckenara, Brereton, Hendrie
F: Hudson, Dunstall, Matthews

F: Scott, Tuck, Platten

I/C J Kennedy Jnr, Crawford, Pritchard, Hodge

Crimmins, Moore, Schwab

Coach - Jeans

Director of Coaching - Kennedy Snr (had to include him somewhere)

How hard is it?

Honourable omissions:

Robertson - Norm Smith 83
Dew - 8 minutes - is that enough -probably not
Buddy - I think will be automatic inclusion in a couple of years
Greg Dear (unlucky to miss 91 with injury)
Paul Dear
Jarman
Arthur

And I just realised I don't have Knights!!!!

Incredibly hard - kudos to the OP for making us think so intensively.

FB Ayres Langford Tuck

HB JK Jnr. Knights Hodge

C Dipper Edwards Robertson

HF P. Dear Brereton Hendrie

FF Matthews Dunstall Peck

R Scott Arthur Platten

No reserves - that was hard enough to pick.

I hope to have some time soon to highlight the GF's, and reasons why I would want to go to war with these blokes on the big day - until then I am at your mercy for ridicule or debate.

Your team is one of the better ones I've seen, but then I followed the same philosophy of selecting blokes who had an impact on GF day. Way I see it, we're not picking an updated team of the century, but an ultimate PREMIERSHIP team, one you'd take into battle on GF day based on their performances in premiership wins. Love them all, but there's no room for Buddy, Mitch, Crawf and Huddo.

Come to think of it, I might have to find a spot for Mark Yeates...
