While we are on the music slant, I've got to mention this. My 16yo punk nephew and all his mates are into US Rap Hip Hop stuff which I find amazing. He say's it's the latest thing. Just can't see it myself - middle class white kids going to a toffy Eastern Melb Private school listening to guys dissing about their bitches and ****** this ****** that. Reckon I'm not that out of it, but in my day (god I'm sounding old) as a teen in the late 80's I'm sure I wasn't into that sort of stuff.

"I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me." - Homer J. Simpson

That quote is actually by Abraham Simpson in the Halopolooza episode.

BTW, so of those comments about the songs were quite funny.

The secret to Revolution No 9 is OF COURSE to play it backwards. The proficies and predictions that this revealed have been remarkably accurate.

'They' ( spooky , isn't it ? ) predicted

- the Fall of the Shah of Iran ( the lines Sha Nah Nah Nah Shana Nah Nah Nana prove this without doubt )
- the succession of John Howard , after overcoming major physical and mental drawbacks . ( all that stuff about 'you tell me that it's evolution ' )
- the demise of Ross Oakley ( ' minds that hate ' )
- Bill Clinton / Monica ( 'get down and get with it ' .. or was that Slade ? )
- all the Melbourne Cup winners since 1972
- the actual location of Elvis.

Talk about the power of music !

Ah, Bernie.

The real truth came out on the cover of Abbey Road. There's a car parked on the side of the road with the rego number, 28IF. And, of course, as all Beatlephiles know, Paul would have been 28 at the time, IF he hadn't been killed in that car accident referred to in the backwards version of Revolution No.9.

If you play the line "Number Nine ... Number Nine" backwards, you get "Turn me on, dead man." Now this is either a reference to Paul's death ... or a hint that John was into necrophilia. Some latter day scholars have suggested that John, being somewhat in love with himself, was predicting his own death ... but this, of course, is unmitigated codswallop ... a classic case of rewriting history.

The evidence in favour of Paul being dead is overwhelming. You've only got to listen to nearly every record that he's made since the Beatles broke up. And then there's "A Day in the Life", which tells us even more ... the exact way the accident occurred.

"He blew his mind out in a car ... he didn't notice that the lights had changed".

It goes on to say that nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords. That's because he was a knight ... i.e. Sir Paul McCartney. But, of course he hadn't been knighted yet ... that's why they weren't sure!!!

But I guess the most interesting theory is the one that says that John and Paul were actually one and the same. Certainly by the time of Magical Mystery Tour that was the case. John clearly states, "I am the Walrus" ... but then, a couple of years later in "The Glass Onion", he reveals that "the Walrus was Paul".

Well ... simple mathematics.

John = Walrus
Walrus = Paul
therefore:
John = Paul

You can't argue with that, now, can you?

Obviously, after Paul's untimely demise after blowing his mind out in a car and failing to notice that the lights had changed, which at the time would have cast extreme doubts on the chances of his ever making it into the House of Lords, John Lennon assumed Paul's identity, using the guise of the Walrus to make the transition. But of course, he still had the problem of having to be John Lennon as well.

And that, basically, is why the Beatles broke up. So that John could be Paul ... and, with the aid of technology, appear to be in two places at once.

Very clever ... don't you reckon.

Alf,

I had always assumed that Ringo was dead - remember he disappeared just before the Australian tour and then 'came back' ?

But the FULL horror is revealed interestingly if you play the triple 'concept' album Tales from the Topographic Ocean ( by the seriously indulgent Yes ( or That's Enough as they were later known as )) BACKWARDS. You are rewarded for the heroic effort by discovering that in fact all the Beatles has doubles - similar in concept to Bjorn Again. I won't bore you with the whole story but there is a special handshake, Cuba and a Mini Cooper involved.

...

Molly,

On a serious note, I contend that the Beatles , by covering , enhancing , commercialising AND acknowledging black music, set the multi racial standards in contemporary music that we all benefit from today.

And they were the first band to compose and play all the music on an album.

It's not so much their music ( which was eclectic AND electric ) as their groundbreaking actions along the way. ( OK.. so the Nehru Jackets were a mistake ). If you were lucky enough to be on that journey with them ( i.e. quite old now ), it was a rare privilege. That's why we go on about it so much.

The reason I say The Beatles are over-rated is mainly due to the misconception that their music was somewhat ground breaking as you are alluding too.

Not more ground breaking than the stuff throughout the 50's - Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Muddy Waters that was ground breaking stuff.

The only credit the Beatles deserves is they began the mass commercialaistion of music through an image, their early music was bland and boring but they had 'the image' and feed off that 'image' and were able to change 'images' over the years just like U2 have done over the past decade. They were also the first band to use the media to build a profile and hype themselves over actual content. Numerous boy/girl bands follow in their footsteps today.

The lack of success but George, Paul & Thomas The Tank after they brokeup goes to show how image prevailed over substance.

Music - 3/10
Image/Spindoctoring - 11/10
