I'm fed up hearing about umpires 'letting it go', 'allowing the game to flow'. Apparrently instructions from above on a match to match basis.
How would we feel if our police allowed robbery, speeding, drunk driving etc one week and clamped down on them the next
Umpires are there to enforce the laws of the game just the same as police are there to enforce the laws of society. Umpiring should be the same for every game from round 1 to the GF. If you clearly break the law a free is given every time.
Right in Front of me yesterday Cousins and Grant were running after the ball towards me. The umpire (23) was directly in my line and saw exactly what I saw but from closer in. Cousins was badly mauled off the ball. No free was given. This was just one incident of many that were obvious to the crowd but in this case the umpire could not claim to be unsighted.
The arbitrary rules from above to 'let games go' or 'tighten up' must stop, with all games being umpired consistently.
