Missed the fact that we had 84 tackles for 7 HTB decisions while Geelong got 11 from 72 tackles.

0.15 free kicks paid per tackle for Geelong
0.08 free kicks paid per tackle for Richmond

That in itself highlights how bad the umpiring was, their players dropped, threw and held on to the ball as much as ours did.

I'm just impressed that Hardwick actually said *something* about the umpiring....even if he gave them an easy out.

Beats his usual "Umpiring is really tough" shtick.

Not really a surprise that the teams with coaches that are prepared to whine and bitch tend to do well on the free kick count, while teams like us that just bend over and take it get screwed.

AFL saying we cannot criticise the umpires.

The fat we cannot is why the umpiring standard has been slipping for a decade. If you do a poor job at work, you get criticised for it and told to improve. Why should AFL umpires be immune? If they were criticised publicly more, maybe the AFL and AFLUA would better educate the umpires and actually make them competent.

The umps get pat on the back each week, with the AFL scarcely admitting incorrect calls were made. This has given the umpires a sense of comfortability and entitlement. If they make a mistake, oh, it's okay, those in AFL circles cannot complain so it doesn't matter.

It needs to change. The umpires do a poor job, the deserve to be criticised.

spot on mate.

i know this would never happen, but i would love for the umpires to have to do a press conference after each game as well and take questions from the media about decisions made during the game.

they need to held just as accountable as anyone else in a working industry.

you watch the EPL press conferences, Managers sometimes tear shreds of the refs if there is some bad calls. they shouldnt be immune!

when the umps cost us the prelim I hope dimmer finally cracks and just unleashes in the press conference

Back in the day on World of Sport they used to have a segment called 'what's your decision?' They would bring the umpies along and show them footage of some pieces of play and the panel would get them to comment on why they did or did not pay a free kick or mark. Of course, not very often did they admit they were wrong (but sometimes they did).

I wonder how it would go these days?

thats a pretty good concept, would love to see it!

even if they dont admit they're wrong but provide a good reason for certain decisions i think people would be happy. but they would also have to cop a few on the chin as well.

Have a look at this one, umpie way ahead of his time with the mo. Also some Tigers footage!

Curtis Deboy just interviewed before the game on 7.
Won a $600k house in a raffle.
AFL is trying to erase the google searches on deboy

Been warned by the afl if charged the second offence can cost club and coach 100k from what I read, no wonder they don't complain often

AFL HQ reminds me of Newscorp HQ. Old boys club with no idea about transitioning into the contemporary world. Act out of fear, very reactive.

We all know how good gagging people works out, and trying to control media/journalism.

Don't write the stories we want? We will tear up your accreditation. Don't like the performance of the umpires? Cough up the cash, there's no way an umpire could ever underperform. They are professionals after all, right? That's why the AFL will totally employ them full time and not just employ part time umpires? :drunk:

AFL likes to have control over everything sometimes it seems that may include the results.

To be fair each game is reviewed and contentious decisions are discussed with the Umpires' Advisor or whatever the current day PC title is. So internally they don't exactly get away with it scott-free as you suggest.

Have always said that no public scrutiny is as a bad thing as sudden public scrutiny. I don't think any decision should be criticised or assessed for at least 24hours to ensure the emotional heat is out of the discussion. Coaches and players should be allowed to comment, repeat comment, and question for 24 hours there after. Umpires or the Advisor should, then have a formal right of response by the approved broadcaster.

Everyone would benefit from a short introspection and then move on.

I think it's part rules and part umpires. The rules are designed to be grey so they can justify any decision made, but then that means there's no internal criticism and they never improve. I also am starting to believe the conspiracy that umps are instructed to keep games close. Friday night was ridiculous. Not just that Sydney got handed the win, but the umps were the only reason Adelaide were even in the game. And as soon as Adelaide looked a winner, that stupid 50m penalty got paid.

Too many Rock Logic thinkers - that 50m was the perfect example.

For example a player receiving a free may play on with out being told he is entitled to play on (even another team mate can presume to play on), yet a defender/tackler has to wait for the umpire to yell "play on" FIRST even though it is obvious he is playing on. All that should have happened was a 50m penalty IF the Umpire believed he wasn't playing on (which would have been an error of judgement if he thought that).

Just give the both types of players the same opportunity.

And to add to this, I'm pretty sure Deboy has been dropped twice this year from afl umpiring, and wouldn't surprise me if he is left out next week as well.

On top of that, it was one of the biggest 50s I've ever seen. Took him from CHB to 30m out.
