Awful decisions.

Was the so called Rioli push in the back the same flog umpire who pinged Riewoldt?

Mollison had an absolute shocker. Besides the Caddy-Rioli f up and the Riewoldt studs up f up, he was also the bloke who missed the clear Soldo kicking in danger free from 10 feet away which one of the other umpires (thankfully) managed to pick out from 50 feet away.

The clowns have spoke running a circus nothing more ,we always cop these controversial decisions.

The bloke in charge of the rules commitee pushed for higher scoring in games yet we've had clubs over the past 2 weeks lucky to score a lousy goal in a half of footy sack them all.

Exactly right, we were last for free kicks in 2017 when we won the flag, and again in 2018 when we finished 2 games clear plus percentage on top of the ladder.

Unlike Collingwood, West Coast and the Bulldogs, who all rely on umpire assistance, we still find ways to win games, even with the umpires playing their grand final against us week in, week out.

It’s a fine line. You have to blame the afl and not the umps. Dimma handled exactly the way he should have.

The rule is a free paid for where it is likely to cause injury. So the umpires got in wrong paying the 2 frees against Jack. SHocking lied about the umpires getting the rule wrong.

I've watched that incident a number of times now and, while I agree the studs up interpretation was wrong, I still think the main case for overturning the mark is that Howe clearly propelled his opponent forward in the marking contest. The conversation should never have been about the use of studs. The starting point should have been whether Howe's opponent was illegally pushed out of the contest. The fact that Howe used his foot to do so is incidental to the matter. Anyway, others may disagree and that's their prerogative. I do recall though that Howe was not overly disturbed by the decision at the time.

Yeah, Hocking seems to be walking both sides of the street here. It's fine standing up for your umpires but there'd be actual respect all round if everyone simply admitted that they got things wrong every now and again. He's doing the umpires no favours with these kinds of statements and just making himself look ridiculous.

Yep, not an easy gig. Every rule change opens a new box of problems. There are 18 Clubs all looking to understand and exploit were possible and a handful of umpires have to walk the line between that seems to get more grey by the season.

I think the inconsistency is also a combination of two other factors:

1. Rule book and constant adapting of rules has made a lot of grey space for i interpretation. Too many words and scenarios tied in to what could be black and white rules.

2. Pace of the modern game and stoppage style play. Biggest issue here is that the umpires can’t always see the play as it’s impossible to get in the best position. Eddie wasn’t completely wrong with his idea about no boundary umpires and having more field umpires who roam the boundaries providing 360 degree eyes on the contest at all times.

Bouncing the ball properly however... that’s a competency issue [emoji6]

The other option is to make a ballsy call and strip back the review and analysis and just say that we are going to accept human error and inconsistencies.
Make the umpires full time and give them the best experience and skillset we can and back them in. Unlikely though in the year 2019

You still need boundary umps to throw the ball in. They just need to the ability to call free kicks when play is near the boundary. I wouldn’t expect them to be calling free kicks in the field of play 50 meters away from the boundary line

Professionalising the umps has its pros and cons. Not sure it’s the answer but they should trial it for a year with a cohort and see anything changes
