To be fair, I'm not sure how many free kicks you can expect when:

a) You almost didn't possess the ball for most of the game
b) Didn't lay any tackles?

Like, the umps were basically making stuff up just to have an excuse to give you guys frees. Prestia said himself after the game that you guys spent 70% of the game defending which hasn't really happened to you before. Like...you barely possessed the ball and laid f all tackles when you didn't have it. Where were your frees supposed to come from?
And only points in it at three qtr time. With Jack on bench.

I also think its the readiness and speed at which the umps make the decisions against us. No other team gets pinged as quickly as Richmond. As soon as they perceive anything that could potentially be a free kick, they blow the whistle. We rarely receive the benefit of the doubt. The club needs to ask for a please explain. There is clear evidence of bias and it's becoming unwatchable.

Watching games over weekend there must have been about 5 decisions per match not given compared to us Thurs night . One was when Prestia had just literally been passed the ball and he literally had it 2 secs , Pies players knocks it out of his hand and holding the ball , no prior opportunity either . But yet pies players can get swung 360 degrees and no holding the ball . Pathetic

Just to compare the Umpires in other games - Sydney v Adel on Friday night - Swans also should have an issues with the umpires as well - looks like the umpires are off to a shocker this season.

It went from being over-officiated and missing some absolute gimmes, to being under-officiated and missing some absolute gimmes in the space of two days.

Has to be a reason for the lack of consistency... what could it be...hmmmm

Last night int he Geelong Dees game Menegola gathered the ball in front of Dees goal, had prior opportunity tried to don't argue a Dees defender got tackled and he dropped the ball, no free played. Geelong cleared the ball and got a goal. It was HTB all day long in front of Dees goal. The inconsistency of the umpiring needs a royal commission.

Royal commission - no just plain good old leadership from the AFL ….

Spot on 👍

It's now beyond a ****ing joke - I've plenty of mates who support other teams who are now agreeing that something is NQR

FFS Benny / Dimma - come out ****ing swinging on this.

Umpiring was worse than ever in the Cats Dees match.

Then today the Dogs hit the front due to an absolute mystery free kick.

these campaigners still work other jobs during the week LMAO while gill and his gimps spend millions on cartoon gimmicks and aflx at marvel stadium

the shit umps get more social media clicks than most things in the game so they are determined to keep it like this

I think everyone here can agree that AFL umpiring is ridiculously inconsistent, I don't think that's even up for debate.

Surely, however, we can see the correlation between ball pressure, tackling and the freekick count. I'm no mathematician, but surely if someone worked out the ratio of tackles/uncontested possessions/uncontested marks/uncontested possessions to free kick count there would be some correlation? Obviously looking at individual decisions (i.e the sidebottom incorrect disposals) is a valid discussion, but I've never liked quoting free kick count.

The better teams get the calls and right now we aren't one of the better teams.

It's one of the new rules they brought in to stamp out pushing and punches of the ball. In fairness to ump he was warned and he continued so fair play to ump that one.

So what's the explanation for finishing last for free kicks in our premiership year?

Free kick differential isn't the same as the ratio between free kick count and the stats I listed.

In 2017 we gave away the second most uncontested possessions, the most contested marks (I don't have uncontested but I imagine it to be similar given we were right up there for total marks).

I'm not saying there is a 100% correlation, but surely play style and free kick count has some relation and I'm fairly certain our play style is conducive of that. The vast majority (in my eyes) of the free kicks we gave away to the pies were defenders trying to over body and scrap because they were out of position or undersized in marking contestes.

Do I think that's because the umpires have it out for us, or because we were trying to compensate for not having Rance and our defenders were struggling to go one on one? Probably the latter.

Agree. And this is where the majority of frees paid against us are coming from. To me, Nank and the defenders are the ones getting pinged for frees against. You'd sort of expect that given their roles, but its the volume of them versus those of the opposition who invariably do the same thing and yet don't get pinged.

I'm almost certain that a couple years ago Clarkson or someone went to the AFL and complained about our defensive tactics especially in contested marking situations.

The differential then takes on its own story because a) we cant get those same interference frees and b) we don't seem to be able to get a holding the ball decision paid to us either. Its always "play on."

The play-ons hurt more than anything else imo.
