Proposals have been made that all umpires carry a roll of 1 metre white carpet. Before a bounce they will roll out the carpet behind them to show the no go zone. Three new umpire carpet assistants will be introduced to roll up the carpets afterwards and get them back to the umpire. Sponsors are sought for the carpets. New rules are being introduced to cover player collission with an umpire carpet assistant.

End of thread ;)

This will be followed by cries from officialdom of:

"Why doesn't anyone want to get into umpire carpet assisting?"

"We really need to do something to get kids interested in umpire carpet assisting"

Followed by a proposal to increase the number of umpire carpet assisters to six because three really can't do the job properly.

no no no

the carpets must be either red....or made out of the same stuff those advertising signs are which change to show a different ad every 20 seconds or so.

This way it can be timed to change just when they are in the view of the tele camera. This way the eye will be drawn to the umpire rather than the player with the ball.

I wouldn't put it past the AFL doing something like that.
