Forwards playing in front always get away with the jumper hold as the jumper doesn't stretch out.Umpiring is a swings and roundabouts thing to me, they miss a few and get a few wrong. Yesterday I saw Charlie had a fair old handful of Allir's jumper, the ball spilled, we crumbed and kicked a goal when it was a clear free kick to PA. Having said that, when you consider the speed of the game, the congestion they need to see through, the rules they need to work with and the spit second they have to make a decision, I think they do a good job overall, howlers are few and far between...thankfully.
Just on this one, I don't remember what the umpire said the free was for, but I interpreted it as for either a block - which it was - or front on contact - which it was.Forwards playing in front always get away with the jumper hold as the jumper doesn't stretch out.
Would have been ropable if the Motlop free was paid for a Port player in reverse situation as there was nothing in it from the angle shown on TV (much like the SPP hold). The Lycett free from the ruck was red hot as well and better just being let go.

My understanding is It's a block if you have your eyes off the ball when contact is made. On replay it looked like contact was made after Newman had turned to contest the ballThe Newman block was there. Just because he got hands to the ball is totally irrelevant.

Guess we have to agree to disagree for me he is looking in the exact same direction as Marshall when contact is madeHe has turned, but he still isn't looking at the ball.

where's he looking then?He has turned, but he still isn't looking at the ball.
I don't know, as I am a believer that umpires generally don't affect the final outcome of the game, as I also believe they can make mistakes as well. But I do think the boundary umpires in the 1979 Grand Final did a stirling job.Can we name the last "well umpired game"? Asking for a friend and a close relative.
