I don't agree.

The intent isn't 'felt' - for want of a better word - at AFL level, but a few tiers down. The AFL have a huge umpiring problem at lower levels; they can't get nearly enough umpires to umpire games. If this prevents even some of the backchat or abuse, it's absolutely worth it.

And it'd be nigh impossible to generate more negativity towards umpires than what came before.

Not sure how it will impact any lower league as afaik no other league has implemented the approach.

I just reckon there's too much footy.

If we use Melbourne as an example - we have the suburban leagues; EFL, NFL, SFL, WRFL, EDFL - there's probably more. All these leagues have multiple divisions (2-3) with 10-12 clubs in each one - each club with a senior, reserves, u/18/19's, then juniors! How many games would that be in a typical weekend?

Now we have the VAFA. Premier A, B, C, D1, D2, D3, D4. 7 divisions with 10ish clubs in each, again with a seniors, reserves and 19's, but throw in the 'clubbies' or 'thirds' that most clubs have. Across the 7 divisions there's what? 35 senior games alone, times that by 3 (reserves + 19's) and it's about 100 games on the one Saturday (give or take).

Now we have both of these suburban clubs and amateur clubs expanding with the girls leagues, so chuck in another 20-30 games.

It's just absurd. And I have no idea what the solution is.

Pay more? ****ed if I know.

IMO the solution to the umpiring shortage is money and promotion. Players around the country are getting paid enough, umpires generally get paid but perhaps it's not enough. Not sure where the money comes from but if you could pay umpires enough and promote that it's a solid weekend money earner then you would get people doing it.

Easy money, theres plenty there

No idea what they get in the premier division but it wouldn’t be chicken feed

Anything less than a glowing smile and a congratulations on yet another excellent umpiring decision by the offending player should be an immediate 50m penalty.

Those 14 year olds turn 15, and start earning much more by working 4-6 hours on weekends or after school at Mcdonalds or KFC. Umpires drop out after their teens because their money does not improve overmuch.

What is the incentive for someone who is 21 - who is no longer on teenager wages - who can outearn umpiring and work extra days as suits them to remain an umpire?

I’ll bet this rule will miraculously disappear come finals time when umpiring finally is implemented the way it should be … happens every year …

But to be fair, it's not working in the context of the modern game. The clock stops much more than it did in the past. And as per the analysis they mentioned in one of the footy shows, recalled bounces are removing about 30 - 40 seconds of play per game, on average.

You have rules about time wasting these days, and other rules about maintaining the flow of the game, in that context, recalled bounces don't fit.

Sorry to quote myself, but we almost had it today, a recalled bounce that could have cost a team the game.

Dogs behind by a point with 7 seconds left on the clock, the ball was bounced and recalled. For the throw up, only 5 seconds left. Lucky it didn't get cleared by the dogs with a quick kick forward, and the siren going off while the ball was in flight.

It’s no different to footballers though, numbers thin out as you go through the age groups. It’s all relative
