Would have been okay with the mark not being paid to Young if they didn't pay the exact same thing to Heeney as a mark. The only difference between the two marks was one was in front of the Carlton goals and the other was in front of the Sydney goals.
Heeney's was less of a mark than Young's though.
They could have paid Young's, and not Heeney's, and been correct.

I generally turn the tv off most games except ours...just find the officiating of the games unwatchable.
Best way is to just listen to the radio, makes the game much more palatable.

Umpiring across the entire league is an absolute mess, all games are producing high numbers of incredibly poor decisions paid or missed…
When watching games at VFL reserves level, the umpiring is far more worse it’s at times quite comical and embarrassing, the future coming through doesn’t give you too much confidence…
AFL heads, Rules Committee, Head of Umpires are all guilty of over the past few decades in their respective roles, with continuous interference in over complicating many rules changes which were more simple to understand & implement…
And here we are now…

Even the Faux commentators said that Heeney’s wasn’t a mark. He started taking the mark, then his hands rolled on the ball and it popped out. Young’s mark he has both hands on the ball, then his elbow got chopped and that tugged his hand away from the ball.

It’s even more simple than them stuffing around with the rules. Why is the AFL partnering with gambling companies?

The biggest issue for me is the stark difference between different umpires and their adjudications.
1 will see a mark. Another will not 1 will see a 10m kick, another won't. The list of different situations is almost endless.
Push. Not a push. Throw. Not a throw etc.
The lack of consistency on calls by different individuals happens in "every" game. I watch most games and it astounds me that 1 umpire at MCG earlier adjudicates an exact same situation that occurs in a later game, completely differently.
The problem is our rules are open for interpretation and different individuals will interpret them differently and call as such.
All I, and I suspect any fan wants, is consistency in their calls. Good luck. Not gunna happen unfortunately

You can blame 4 umpires on this. It means there are 9 umpires each week who prior to 4 umpires wouldn't have been considered good enough, they now get games and it trickles down to VFL. It was completely unnecessary and has not added anything since the introduction.

And their end of year bonus cheques. That's it. We made x this year from the supporters, clubs and our business partners... so our bonus cheques will be in the millions this year... again.
Good point and it’s something I’ve had the same thoughts about, the depth of umpiring looks to be more diluted than ever before, going back to three umpires should be worth considering again…

Nah. The AFL can't be both a deeply shambolic operation and also so tightly run that they can fix matches over a period of years with nary a peep from a media pack that has an insatiable hunger for headlines.

The biggest issue with the 4 umpire system is that each other interprets the rules in their own way. We've all seen one umpire pay a holding the ball decision, while another umpire a couple of minutes later, won't pay a free kick for the exact same action.
The 4th umpire has been in the game for the last 2.5 seasons and we've seen the quality of umpiring decline rapidly. Add in the fact that the umpires in the AFL are all amateurs and the whole system is open to massive failures to pay the right free kick. I reckon it's something that Gill the Dill wanted to introduce because of his love of American football and the massive number of officials they have controlling the game. But those guys are all professional umpires. They study the rules. They have a proper review system with a complaints system. It's something that the AFL hasn't got and never will have. Because they love the controversy.

They're the guys who run the game out on the ground. If they are incompetent or corrupt, we get badly run games. If they're good, we never notice them. It's unfortunately been a long time since we had umpires that ran the game well and were basically unnoticed. Not since Razor Ray appeared on the scene and wanted to be the centre of attention during a game.

I think those with conspiracy theories regarding decision making is giving too much credit to the AFL. They’re not that organised or clever. They are a glorified country league admin making things up on the run and not thinking decisions through.

I think that we can agree that they're an amateur organisation trying to run a league that's worth billions. However, they are greedy and see any sort of profit for the league as a reason to write themselves million dollar bonus cheques. It's been like this since the AFL came into being.
You're half right. The umpiring standard isn't that high and it should be much higher. But the rules of the game are pretty straight forward. Drop the ball in a tackle or throw the ball, incorrect disposal. Get tackled holding the ball, holding the ball. Get tackled without being in control of the ball, holding the man. And all the rest of the basic rules are equally as simple. If the umpires can't even get those right, they shouldn't be umpires.

Well, that’s done me in. The standard of umpiring has sucked all enjoyment out of watching the game. Ollie gets taken high and legged in the same tackle… nothing. Weitering goes the spoil like we see dozens of times a game. High and a goal for them. White gets the ball, braces for contact and lowers his centre of gravity, he gets done for holding the ball. Toby does the same thing, high contact. Young goes for a mark, takes it clean, has his arms chopped… play on.
The opposition cries “free kick Charlie”… when there were at least 4 opposition goals kicked from dubious free kicks. The AFL needs to sort out the issue, or they’re going to start losing supporters at the games, and on the idiot box.
