We continually bag the umpires year after year wanting them to improve their standards. I don't know about you but i'd have to say half the fun of the footy is abusing the umpires for making mistakes. How boring the footy would be if every decison was correct, and we couldn't have our weekly whinge about the umps.

Have you ever looked at a decision, impartially, that is, without taking a team's or fan's view into account? You do not know how hard it is to be an umpire. I am a boundary umpire - so I don't know how field umpis feel - but on the other side of the fence, as a mad Pies fan, I do question their decisions. I think the umpires can be too soft in the AFL, eg the Ansett Cup GF, so hopefully in 2000, they let the little things go, and focus on the important decisions whcih can really have an impact on the game. There is more material on umpires on the site below.

As far as I'm concerned the main reason why the umpires appear to be so pathetic is because the game is much harder to umpire these days.

Sure, sometimes they make unbelievable mistakes but I think a lot of the focus on umpires is because of the increased media attention paid to the game. I don't reckon they are that much worse than say 15 years ago.

The increased speed of the game hasn't helped because things happen far quicker than they used to.

All the third umpire has done is increased the level of interpretation to three instead of two. This means more inconsistency. The extra umpire was supposed to abolish the fullback holding the full-forward. They haven't stopped soft**** Silvagni groping his opponent.

However, I lay the most blame at the players. Let's face it, most AFL footballers are the biggest cheats in world sport. Everytime the ball comes in their general vacinity their immediate instinct is to grapple with their opponent. They'll do anything to win the contest. If you have ever watched the footy marathon on the Friday night before the Grand Final you would have noticed that back in the 60's the players rarely seemed to grag their opponents and played the ball.
