Do you support them for the difficult job they do amongst highly passionate supporters or are they to blame for every loss your team has experienced?

The umpires do have a tough job, as for Coaches blaming their losses on the Umpires through the Media, I think this is a cop out.... The Coaches have a forum through the Umpires Coach in which to vent any frustrations without the fear of a fine... The public bashing they decide to hand out is only to justify their own teams performance or lack thereof. Well done to the umpires, with all the changes of interpretation in the rules, no wonder they have a hard time of it.
Leave em' alone and let them do their job, maybe the AFL coaches should look at doing their's.

Very much disagree, sunbkangas. Umpires, coaches and players get paid big bucks for what they do. When a player is struggling with form, they cop it publically. When a team is performing badly, no one at all has a problem, in laying the boots into the coach. What makes the umpires untouchable?
Their efforts this year have been nothing short of pathetic and good on Grant Thomas for stating what the good majority of us are thinking. The amount of games that have been influenced by umpire's decisions this season has to be an all time high. Anyone wanting to argue that, only needed to watch the Stkilda, Freo game last week.
In saying all of this, it is fine time the AFL left our once great game alone. Stop changing the bloody rules and start protecting the bloke with his head over the pill.
I think you all get my drift.

Interesting and valid point.
But is it the Umpiring decisions that are influencing the game? Or is it the age old "Interpretation" of the rules that is causing the problems. The umpires are doing what they are told to do, and that is follow the rules that they are instructed to follow.
As for players being led to public. Yes, they do. Umpiring is not as high paid as you expect. If we were to make umpires face a public forum to explain a decision that they make we would be the one of the only sports in the world to do so. The coaches have a forum through the Umpires Coach to raise concerns that they may have. They should stick to it.

I think the biggest problem people have with the umpiring, is the inconsistancies. You would understand two different umpires interpretating the same rule differently, but when you get the same umpire paying a free kick one minute and ignoring the exact same infringement the next, this becomes a huge issue with the football public.
I see your point, in that the AFL are continually changing the rules and making the umpire's job more difficult, then it need be. However, this does not alter the fact that this year has been the worst display of umpiring I have seen, in all the years I have followed the game. Unless the AFL leave our game alone, it is only going to be a matter of time, before an umpire's decision is going to cost a team a grand final. I just hope it's not mine.

The reason umpiring is considered worse these days are there are more of them... More umpires, more mistakes.. I must say, its typical of a Hawthorn Supporter to be upset at Umpiring this year, after all, they do have so many losses they need to point the finger of blame at someone.
I for one, believe that there are much larger contributing factors to losses than that of a couple of umpiring decisions.
But, continue to blame them, that way supporters have thier justification for loss.

I therefore think, that it is your team that sucks

Ha, you might have to wait a while for this to happen.... :p

Didn't notice Essenscum exactly setting the world on fire this year, did you? Just a word of advice, sunbkangas. Please read my posts properly before making irrational judgements. I don't believe I mentioned Hawthorn at all in my post regarding the pathetic umpires.
You need to mellow, it's not my fault your team are crap and have no future! My team finished the season with five wins, whilst that's disappointing, I and many other Hawthorn supporters can be feeling rather confident about the future. You, on the other hand, can look forward to being Hawthorn's bitches for the next decade. Sorry, I mean Brownie's Bitches.

Ah, once again, we have to get personal about things. While I like the passion Hawthorn supporters show, its a shame it is so often misplaced, but thats ok. As for the future, there will only be one way that we can see this, and that is by waiting for the future to occur. I for one, am sure I will enjoy watching this unfold.

When it is Hawthorn and Essendon it is always personal. I think we should agree to disagree, don't you?

I am an umpire, they do have a hard job, but I also believe they ******** it up often and they are a complete joke. I see much better umpires down in the local comps than in the AFL but its such a joke of a way to get to the top, it has hardly anything to do with how you umpire but if you show up to training or not and get fit.
