Hawks - 75 For, 97 Against That is a hell of alot of frees for 3 games.

I did'nt complain as much against Freo - but that was also due to the game situation.

How many of Hawthorn's were ruck infringements? They played the last couple of games with only one, very inexperienced, ruckman. As a result of his immaturity (lack of physical development, tactical nous) he was giving away frees hand over fist.

Renouf is 3-7 in frees this year - 3 for, 3 against versus Geelong; 0-4 against Sydney, where he was worked over well by Jolly; and ignored by the umps against North. Simon Taylor was 2-4 in his one game. Roughead, who spelled him in the ruck on Sunday didn't give away a free.

By contrast, Maric is 0 for and 10 against this year, and Tippett is 6 for and 10 against, so 20 of the 68 frees we've conceded this year have been by our two ruckmen.

It's frustrating because a lot the free's are fairly 50/50 and Maric never seems to get a look in.

ahhh, missed the GF last year due to work; thanks for clearing that up...but if that is how the rule works, i doubt we'll see the free kick being paid at all, because teams would stop doing that altogether.

It's one of the good changes to the rules as it's made for far better footy when the ball is close to goal.

As you say, we're not really going to see this free kick applied, or if we do it will be so so rarely., as players don't want to concede the free and almost certain goal that would follow.

The one time it was paid it was paid incorrectly and was a pre-season match. I'd be surprised to see it be paid at all because as you said no one wants to give a team a free goal. I also don't think it will affect the Crows much as we have always played little handball games deep in the backlines to run it out of defense instead of conceading a behind.

Some supporters might wanna read what the players and NC have been saying in the media...a lot of the free kicks Adelaide are conceding are there and they've admitted they need to get better in that area.

Was paid in a NAB challenge match between WC and Freo, and was an incorrect decision. It also probably changed the result of the game, not that it really mattered being NAB challenge, but if it cost a team a game in the regular season you could only imagine the uproar.

the holding against doughty wasn't really there though...

Much better performance by the umpires tonight although they missed a few of our early crucial frees and then paid some very soft ones. Frustrating but much much better tonight.

Yes, a definite step in the right direction today. The non-mark to Rutten and the ridiculous 50m penalty, both resulting in goals against us, were terrible decisions and there were a couple of other poor ones but a much better result this week than the last couple.

I thought the crowd was a bit harsh on the ump when he kept recalling the bounce. For years people wanted them to recall bad bounces. Now that they do they still get bagged.

I thought the umps put in a much improved effort compared to the past two weeks (not that that was too hard to do), maybe it's because they're in the trainee jumpers this week . Ok, they made a couple of poor calls, but all up they were pretty good.

They had a go at him because it was the third time in four bounces (from memory) that he had to recall it. If you cannot bounce the ball reliably at least half the time, you shouldn't be the guy doing the centre bounces! In his defence it wasn't a problem after that.

The holding the ball decisions tonight seemed to change at half time. In the second QTR they paid some very poor ones, against both teams. (It does NOT make it ok to be crap both ways).

You have to feel for the umpire that cant bounce the ball, they should be given the option to just throw it up anyway if they lack the confidence, or ability to successfully do it.

Front on contact rule seemed to get ignored at various times, once in the crows favor up forward, and once against.

A couple of clear makes didnt get paid, such as the Rutten one (Geelong also had a couple I can remember).

Overall, I left not really wanting to kill them

That 50 metre penalty that killed the game like popping a balloon with a pin happened right in front of me and IMO was a reflection of the lack of feel umpires have for the game.

The Geelong player had moved at least 2 metres to his right which should have been called play on - but wasn't. Maric, like all footballers is taught to guard the mark and if a player deviates off line, which should be play on, to tackle that player.

The player and team is being penalized 50 metres for the umpire's incompetence.

Exactly. The geelong player headed off, to his right. He himself closed up the space between him an Maric. Play on. And it did indeed kill the game. It is not just with the Crows of course, because there have been countless games where the crucial decision screws it all up for one team.

It is simply naive to argue that umpires can't win and lose games. In this case it was the difference between a well fought loss and a blow-out.

The guy with the ball can run forward (or move backwards), if he takes more than a step left or right, then it's play on.

Umpires need to start paying that again.

It was definitely a better umpiring performance last night, but there are a couple of things I think need addressing;

• Holding the ball.
  • Does 'incorrect disposal' still exist? Too many times players are losing the ball in the tackle, or dropping it completely while trying to dispose, and not getting pinged.
  • The most obvious thing at the moment is the number of times the opposition player is dragging the ball back in, pinning it to their opponent, and then winning a free kick for HTB. It's so ****ing obvious, why the hell don't the umpires wake up to it?
  • Clarify the current definition of the prior opportunity interpretation.

And too many times, umpires are missing blatant throws; not just in our games, but all over the League, they need to really crack down on it.

Oh, and don't pay a 'push in the back' when a player runs down the guy with the ball, tackles them, and then guy with the ball throws himself forward dragging them both down.

At first the crowd around me was I suppose applauding them for recalling. But once it started happening so much impatience sunk and and people were going off their nuts. Last quarter they stopped recalling the bad bounces and letting them go. I think its inconsistent.
On top of that, they didn't even THROW the ball up straight in a couple instances...
