Totally agree with this thread. Easter Saturday 2009 was the single most one sided umpiring game I had seen.

The only defence I have for the umpires is our skills are just as bad.

As for the genius earlier who pointed out that Essendon received 17 points from umpiring decisions and Carlton received 0 points, did you take off 6 points for the Lonergan goal that was disallowed in the third quarter due to another mistake? No. Don't let facts get in the way of a good story though.

Umpires or not, you guys did a good job to get within 20 points this time. 2.1 to 3.8 in the second quarter... could of been all over by Half Time.

having said this, there is no way near enough holding the man decisions being paid at the moment, players are being held far more often than in the recent past and umpires are missing a lot of them...

The umpiring was of a horrific and of a sub par standard. Absolutely robbed with some of the decisions and this is coming from someone who watched the Hawthorn F.C lose 34 out of 39 Free counts at one stage.

I feel your pain and I honestly believe the way some games are umpired there has to be bias or cheating coming from the little men. If there's not well it's even worse as our officials would have to be the most incompetent in the world

I think the standard of umpiring matched the performance of both teams on the night.

F'ing disgusting. The rules and the interpretations of them miss the spirit of AFL football by such a long way sometimes all you can do is laugh (easy for me to say, we won).

The problem with umpiring is the increased management. Management out of a text book means one thing KIPs. It is quite clear that to meet their KPIs the umpires have to pay as many free kicks as they can see. Other than that horrible decisions on the wing after Yarran tackled Pears they just paid so many free kicks for actions that had no impact on the game.

Did he have prior opportunity? Yes.
Did he dispose of the ball correctly? No, he dropped it.

We wouldn't have won regardless, because we were pathetic, but that was probably the worst non-decision I've ever seen.

I dont know sharks... there were a fair few worst that that one.

The non-holding the ball at the end of the first half that got the bummers a goal was I think much worse than the yarran one.

If that's the only example you can find of Carlton getting "gifts" then I'm glad you agree with me, thanks. The man was tackled after having prior opportunity and the ball hit the ground before he kicked it ... that is, incorrect disposal.

It may not be in the spirit of the law, but it is certainly to the letter of the law, and each one of the decisions I have referred to should have been interpreted based on the laws of the game.

No Offense, but that is not even a rule. It is called taking a mark, playing on, was tackled with prior opportunity and then incorrect disposal of the ball. Last time I checked the relevant rule was holding the ball or incorrect disposal of the ball.

In thirty odd years of watching this great game, I am amazed that simple rules, that have always been a part of this game, are not applied correctly or interpreted wrong not only by umpires but also by fans. The problem lies in too many people making subjective decisions from own vantage point. Unfortunately this will never change because the game has moved on too quickly for just one umpire and the powers that be and media have hinted that more umpires not less is the way to go. Further adding to individual interpretations.

Anyways, have rambled on enough, umpiring was/is terrible, but so were we, kicking effeciency killed us all night, kicking at goal in first quarter was disgraceful.

There is always next week to make amends and improve. Win, lose or draw.

One of their guys came straight off the bench and intercepted a kick or affected a tackle and it got paid... bullshit...

There should be a rule in that case that a player off the interchange cannot directly influence procedures for a period of 60 seconds after coming off the bench.

Lonergan's goal was disallowed because the ball hit the turf before he kicked it after being tackled by Army... the replays all show the ball smacking the deck before his foot touches it which according to the rules equates to an incorrect disposal which is what he got pinged for...
