Roast Umpires

I was sitting in the AFL members stand, on our forward pocket in the last quarter. In the last minute or so of play the ball had been kicked towards the forward pocket where Paddy Ryder was standing. Before he could go for the mark some Carlton had both his hands wrapped around Ryder's arm.

Overall I wasn't too upset with the umpiring. We definitely got a worse deal against the Swans than on Saturday.

Spot on, just rueing the fact that but for a couple of questionable calls we'd be 4-0

I thought it was one of the better umpired games for the year. They let the play go most of the game and in general did not play sissie free kicks as they usually do. Overall i wish all games were umpired like this game.In most part the umpires let alot go which is how it should be, after all it is footy not netball!

That's the one I mentioned earlier. A clear free.

I think the AFL nned to tell the clubs and supporters about the push in the back rule. There have been to many this year that have been hit and miss. I thought the push in the back paid laid on Saturday should of been holding the ball first. He was tackled and disposessed before he was landed in his back.

If umpires called every game like they did this game, I'd stop going to the footy, as you'd no longer be playing against another side, but be up against three egomaniachial gimps in white/yellow/red.

The problem is most are officiated in this way. Is destroying the game.

This was a "good mark" against Ryder. Not two hands in the back, way before the contest.

Indicative of how Hurley and Ryder were treated all day.

Here's one that went our way... Monfries throwing it to Zaharakis for the final point.

Oh you mean this bit where he gets his right fist to it?

Or do you mean this bit where Carrazzo lands in his back?

Have U got 1/2 second before, when Carazzo's arm is under Jetta's armpit. This photo is taken after Jetta begins his dive. At no stage does Carazzo touch anywhere above his chest line, yet he flings his head back? Can't believe this is even being discussed.

Sure do. Here's Carrazzo's elbow touching Jetta's chin, just before it coathangers him.

And for the record, I don't want to go on about this forever. But hey, it's only Tuesday after a Blues game. Can't expect me to be calmed down yet :p

Good get.

mentioned on another forum that Jetta tries to milk the free as evidenced by the pic.

Good call by the umpire.

Weren't that bad. Only one BS free to Judd.
Couple that could've gone either way, but (by and large) they were paying it consistently all day so no complaints.

Least I've seen McBurney & Nicholls shaft us in a long while.

Watched the replay. Of the 19 free kicks we received, Matthew Nicholls paid 0 and the majority of the missed free kicks were with him in control.

He really hates us for some reason.

So in the words of Jeff Gieschen, this is a free kick:

Make your mind up Jeff - did your maggots cost us 2 points or 4?

Possibly 6 points mate... 4 against Syd, 2 against Carltank.

Still, we lost the game in the 4th on the weekend without the help of the umps. Gus missing the lot from 35m out, 45 degree angle was bad, plenty of errant shots on goal, a few contests squibbed giving Carltank possession. Blaming umps is the easy way out and deflects blame from our players. The umps (I am not a fan of umpires, don't get me wrong) are not soley to blame.

The Sydney game.... well I am a bit more convinced of the role the umps played in delivering Sydney a win there. Still, we could've put them away earlier in the game when 4 - 5 goals up but instead let them back in.

Fantastic post.

He'd come up with some spin to even "deny" that one, I'm sure.

Do yourself a favour: Look up his resposne to the Round 1 goal that Dempsey was awarded. Gia clearly got hands to it, and should've been a behind. Listen to not so much Jeff's approval of the decision, but his reasoning. The guy is an imbecile.

Also, please blog your post, Ben.

Yes, I meant that bit, and no he didn't get his right fist anywhere near it. He grabbed the ball with both hands, released his right and then threw it with his left. There was no fist at all. I watched it at 1/16 speed on my PVR. You can post all the stills you want, it won't make a throw into a handball.

Yeah i watched it frame by frame too and I disagree.

Regardless, there was no prior and he demonstrated an attempt to correctly dispose, which wouldn't constitute a free kick any day of the week unless it was plainly obvious he intended to throw it.

i reviewed the game and have the following:

1st Qtr Ess 7 decisions incorrect against Car 2 decisions incorrect against. These decisions cost Ess 3 goals.

2nd Qtr Only 1 incorrect decision for each team. Carlton got a goal they didn't deserve.

3rd Qtr Ess 3 decisions incorrect against. No incorrect decisions against Carlton.

4th Qtr Ess 2 decisions incorrect against. Car 3 decisions incorrect against. These decisions cost Ess 1 goal.

So in summary my review showed 13 incorrect decisions against Essendon and 6 incorrect decisions against Carlton. Out of 19 incorrect decisions Essendon received 68% of them. I could handle anything between 40-60% either way but once it is outside this range its not fair. The Sydney match was much worse.

The first quarter umpiring was terrible - from there on it wasn't too bad.

The real problem is consistent decisions and that is nearly impossible as the umpires are individuals and see things slightly different the same as supporters do.

Now i believe the standard of umpiring has been below what it should be for some time but instead of all the whinging and name calling i like to look at it a different way.
If you are not going to have full time umpires that are well paid then you are not going to have the best umpiring available. The umpires are like players in that they are all at different levels and not all of them are A grade. This will mean that there simply has to be mistakes and the umpiring department heads will have to put a degree of spin on some decisions.

The other thing with the umpires is do they as individuals make more mistakes on the field than the players ? Angus Monfries does not score in the last quarter from 35 out and we do not yell out Monfries you bloody sub human maggot, get off the bloody ground you useless terd yet a push in the back decision that goes in what we feel the wrong way results in mega agro.

Now i do have a bit of an different motive here and that is the flow on effect this umpire bashing has to local footy. Umpires become a sub species and those of us involved in local footy have to cop umpires with ordinary ability simply because some of the best young umpires get abused until they give it away or they simply give up before it starts.
It is annoying because it is a culture thing, we seem to hold them to some sort of higher standard than the players or even our selves and i can tell you now i have made many mistakes over the journey in all areas and i would not like to be berated for even 50% of them.

I think people need to take a good hard look at themselves. The game can not be played without umpires, they are only human and they work other jobs as well so chances are there will be mistakes and that will effect games but so do other factors like players missing goals or not sticking to game plans etc.
You will find more players mistakes in a game than you will umpire mistakes.
You have to let it go. Sure at the game you can yell out "come on up that was not a bloody free" but the continual use of maggot or dog needs to be removed from the game.

The AFL should have a panel of 24 professional umpires that are well paid and full time and they need to put more money into keeping the good umpires in the game at local level.
For the second to happen we have to also rid the game of the current "umpire bashing" that seems to be a sport for some people.
