In the end, who it favoured or didn't is irrelevant. Discussion here wont change what happened. What was paid was paid, what was missed was missed. Our mistakes, and those of the Collingwood players had far more of an impact.

This has to be one of the worst peices of umpiring I have ever seen. The worst part was the umpire standing in the centre of the ground 20 meters away had the perfect view and did nothing.

Another shocker in the 3rd qtr, the ball went deep in collingwoods 50 and didak pushed henry sqaure in the back he went flying and slid over the boundary line. It was at the back of a pack but it was so blatant I dont know how the umpire didnt see it. Our supporters went nuts. Luckily they didnt get a goal.

I dont think it would hurt for our club just to call a private meeting with the geisch just for some clarification, it might get into the umpires minds to go easy on us. It cant get any worse than it has been.

Still - it was our missed opportunities in the first quarter that cost us. If we took advantage of our superior inside 50 numbers (15 to Collingwood's 13) and capitalised on our goals (instead of kicking just 3 points to Collingwood's 26), we would have been better positioned for the rest of the game. Simple as that.

How about travis cloke taken front on (heavily) in a marking contest 5 mtrs out directly in front?, how about harryO being pinged for holding the ball with clearly no prior opp resulting in a goal to you?

I agree the umpiring was terrible but to suggest we had the run of the green in pathetic.
 
I've only seen Collingwood supporters trying to claim anything other than Essendon being unfairly treated. Go figure.

Oh well, as I said, Collingwood were a better side, so this doesn't hurt like the Carlton and Sydney games, where we were legitimately "robbed" of 4 points.

Watching the Geelong/Hawthorn game, Mackie gets pinged for "in the back" on Roughead. (Beginning of the 4th).

Mackie doesn't say much, but clearly isn't happy, and you hear the umprie say "I was over there, but it looked like you landed on his back."
Mackie replies (not fully heard)
Umpires says "I couldn't fully see his back but I had to make the call" (paraphrasing).

Disgraceful. Either get in position and make the correct call based on what you know, or don't make the call at all. Guesswork is what costs teams games.

I just hate the way so called "professional" umpires can make such basic errors, there were some absolute howlers on monday (both ways), howlers that just shouldnt be made at any level let alone a show case event.
 
I reckon there were 3 or 4 where the umpires were scared off making a call b/c it was in front of the Pies cheer squad (Harry O holding, Toovey front-on contact in a marking contest) and a couple up our end.
On balance they were a lot happier to make calls that stopped goals & awarded it the other way rather than the other way around.
Poor, but still, no effect so meh.
 
I've watched the replay. At the game I was livid. Those missed HTBs were very annoying against O'Brien late. The one against O'Brien where he had nearly no prior was fair enough because it was basically against the team. I think it is good that you get pinged when a team mate handpasses to you under the hammer and just go to ground without trying to get it out.

Without doubt the worst decision of the day was when Toovey crashed front on into Hurley. There was a bit of payback latter in the day when Stanton almost crashed into Cloke in the same manner. Of course it was much softer but I think he did chop his arms so there was a free there too.

It was Stanton who ducked his head twice and got bullshit free kicks.

Neutrals I know think that Collingwood got the rub of the green. So what if Essendon got more frees it is clear that Collingwood play on the edge of the rules more then Essendon do. O'Brien is clearly a protected species out there. The amount of scragging he gets away with is up in the Silvani league. Collinwood fans need to be honest about that. I've always admitted that Monfries ducks his head and then throws it back on contact like he's just been shot. I remember Wanganeen couldn't be touched either. The one I disagree with is Lloyd.

In the end we lost the game by not taking advantage of having greater possession of the football then Collingwood. We wasted the last kick into the F50 in the first quarter and kicked very innaccurately in the whole first half. Giving up two cheapies in the last minute was annoying too. As the scorline didn't reflect the game.

If we fix the kicking into 50 and kicking for goal as well as Ryder and Hurley being a little more aggressive in combatting the scragging we should beat that mob next time.

Pears back will help too. If that isn't enough next year we'll have Dempsey and Winderlich back.
 
It's not just O'Brien (although he is the worst scragging cheat in their team)... Noticed Reid, Tarrant and Sidebottom do a lot of holding themselves, I mean literally holding the player by the wrist so the opponent can't get to a contest. Collingwood are a great team but I'd love to see how their team defense would go without all the holding, back pushing, tunneling, illegal blocking and arm-chopping.

This was the decision that absolutely riled me at the game. I have not seen the replay of the actual incident so I might have been wrong. But live at the game, I was worried I would be reported for antisocial behaviour to that mobile number you can text. I ripped into the umpire after this decision with swearing and abuse.

1. Crameri's non paid mark on the boundary line was definitely a mark
2. Whilst the Fletcher hands in the back was there, we all acknowledge it shouldn't be a free kick in the context of the game.
3. Very suprised Toovey was not penalised.
4. I also thought Crameri's 2/3 grabber in the 3rd qtr should've been paid a mark.
5. Thought Ryder should've been given a free from that dropped mark in the goal square late in the game.

But then again, I thought the umpires were pretty good in general (how's that for a contradiction after the previous 5 points :p)

PS. Harry O is a massive scragger and if I were an opposition supporter I'd hate him with a passion.

i see the talk about the toovey incident. i can only assume then that you were all just as horrified when stanton did exactly the same thing on dawes at the ponsford end and play on was waved? ess had the rub of the green with the umpiring all day and it is a bit rich to focus on this one incident so much as if it was pivotal to the result

Rub of the green? Probably not. Make a difference in the result? Probably not. Does it create more anticipation for the next time the sides meet? Definitely.
 
Umpires today

Yes, I know I winge about them a lot but today was the most biased umpiring I have seen all year. They were disgraceful. I counted at least 5 times each where Kerr and Naitanui should've been called for Holding the Ball and got away with it, and then Lonergan gets called for it when Kerr was holding him before he even got the ball. Disgraceful display :thumbsdown:
