Can someone please explain how Hurley was penalised for attempting to take a chest mark whilst crashing the pack with around 9min to go in the last quarter? I've seen it about 5 times and I still don't get it?
 
Just watching the West Coast and Bulldogs game in between writing an article, and it's apparent that Kennedy is getting questionable free kicks straight in front of goal for the slightest of touches. I know it comes back to individual interpretation and every umpire sees the game differently, but I'm bewildered that Kennedy can receive these cheap free kicks when Hurley gets completely and consistently mauled by his opponents. I just have to shake my head, unfortunately.

This decision was the worst of the night for me. Happened directly in front & I was foaming!!

On another note if you take a player down (like Fletch did to Thomas (I think) in the 3rd) is that still supposed to be a 50m penalty or was that just a NAB rule one year? It was a very professional free by Fletch as it was a certain NM goal if he didn't impede on Thomas who would have been 30m in the clear, and really deserves to be 50m IMO.

I thought 2010 was worse. Sunday June 6th, round 11. Sydney vs Essendon @ SCG.

Two Sydney players tackle each other, no physical contact is made with an Essendon player whatsoever, Essendon get pinged for a high tackle.

I have never seen any decision worse than that in my entire life, the mind boggles to a point of near implosion over how they came up with that.
 
Umpiring (and bad umpiring) is part of footy. There is no big conspiracy against the Bombers. Yes there is nothing worse than losing games to questionable decisions but its not like we are the only team that happens to.
 
Just watched the replay. Wasn't as bad as what I thought at the game (which mostly is the case).

The free for shepherding when Hurley marked was there. Soft, but was there.

The one on Crameri where he marked it after two norf players fell over was for high contact, again I thought it was there.

The one against paddy Ben was for putting his hand on Macintosh's shoulder. Again soft, but technically there.

If that's how the game is to be umpired we have to be smarter about how we play.

The one against Hurley in the marking contest I still have no idea about. But then they missed a clear fifty against Fletch in the third.

All in all our players errors had more of an impact than the umpires I thought.

Ok Dave, did you look at all the 'soft' ones that could have been paid to us? That is why it is a howler.. if you are going to pay the soft ones then so be it but pay them to both sides and make it a game of free kick contests!

It was the disparity between the decisions that upset me, Petrie surrounded by a 5m protection zone whilst Hurley can apparently hold 2 guys on his shoulders and still go for the ball??
 
Yeah, the inconsistency is what gets most of us pissed off, but then we don't look at it objectively. I used to get really pissed at umpiring but now I realise that:

a) Nothing is going to change after the fact &

b) 60 odd clangers by players has a far greater impact than umpiring errors.


Players make mistake, so will umps. We just have to live with it. And I say this not because I think any mistake they make should be excused (they are rated on their performances) but because the attitudes we take to AFL matches filters down to the junior ranks. When you've seen grown men and women screaming abuse at 12 and 13 yo kids umpiring it aint pretty.

They paid it to McVeigh against (I think) Bolton.

The pisspoor thing wasn't the mistake, it was not reversing the mistake.
Should simply say "sorry, my bad, changing the decision, ball-up".

It's the first time I can recall leaving the ground upset after a WIN.

I couldn't stop thinking about how easily that utter crap umpiring could have cost us the game. I've heard the 'if you kicked straight' argument, but not kicking straight is not an excuse for the umpires to screw us.

I can't recall every incident, because I don't take notes at the game, but a few that were just deplorable:

- The Watson disallowed goal (video review). What a bunch of horse excrement. The ball doesn't deviate, it wasn't touched. Been thousands of those throughout AFL history, and this is the one disallowed??

- Hooker getting his arms chopped by Petrie. Clean over the shoulder, arms chopped, no free.

- The Petrie second goal free (Hooker push). I don't deny it was there - but pay every one of them then, instead of picking out random incidents as the one to penalise.

- Hurley's mark against two opponents in the last quarter. What exactly was that paid for?

- Firrito; infringed against Hurley at least half a dozen times, and no free kick given.

HOWEVER, on the replay there was no deviation and you could not clearly see the ball touch his hand. How can they be so sure to rule it a point.

So...
Goal umpire thinks it's touched. About to signal.
Field isn't sure, asks for the review.
Boundary thinks it's touched when he's asked.

Review tells us nothing.
Decision reverts to the original - touched, point.

System didn't change the decision - worked well in that instance.

Under the old system it would've been called touched (after a conference of the three).
Under the very old system it would have been touched (only going on the goal ump's call).


Waaaah.

The review didn't rule either way.
It was inconclusive so it went back to the umpires.

The only time the system actually makes the call is when there's an obvious error - in this case there wasn't.


When the review isn't clear, and the umpires don't have a clear opinion it goes to the lesser score (as it always has).
 
I don't usually get abusive at the umpires but I almost burst a blood vessel shouting abuse at the game on Saturday night. It was absolutely deplorable, especially in the last quarter. It seemed like the umpires were blatantly trying to get North across the line.

I think it was the worst in the 4th and it just really did feel/vibe like they had a bet and wanted north to win badly.. literally just kept taking the ball off us!
