we got outplayed for the whole game bar the last qtr. you guys probably deserved to win but class showed out in the end. i didnt really notice the umpiring that much, maybe a few iffy ones each way but i dont think it was game changing.

Just watched a replay of the last quarter again and here are 3 obvious free kicks against Carlton that led to goals to the Eagles.

7:52 left on the Clock ball is on Carltons half forward line there is about 7 players fighting for the ball in a pack and the umpire calls a holding the ball decision against Carlton when we did not even have possession, Eagles take the free and go forward and kick a goal.

5:44 left on clock ball is on the Eagles HFF and Houlihan goes up for a mark and is taken front on by Hunter and ball is knocked out of play no free kick throw in, ball is thrown in a free is payed to Cox ball goes forward Eagles goal.
2:51 left on clock Bentick takes possession between Eagles HF line and the wing runs back and hand balls to Scotland who is tackled the second he takes possession and is pinged for holding the ball, BULL****, then the umpire calls advantage as Cousins runs to 40 and Goals

1:00 left, ball is kicked to the Eagles goal square where Embley has pulled Mcgraths jumper so far off his body that an orbiting Satellite would have seen it, no free kick mark payed to Embley who Goals. Bull****

Now if the umpires did not get carried away with the crowd i am a monkeys uncle, Carlton did not run out of legs that is bull****, momentum was handed to the Eagles by bad umpiring decisions at crucial moments in the last quarter, even your totally biased radio commentators admitted as much during the last quarter, Carlton deserved to win that game as we outplayed the Eagles all day and where beaten by a parochial crowd and umpires that got sucked in to the emotion of the game and the noise from the home crowd.

See, we can all see things that shoulda, coulda, woulda made the game different!

I hate to tell you, but it wasn't the umpires that got us over the line, it was the Carlton players lack of belief in themselves when it really counted. A few of the decision that went against Carlton in the last quarter were because the players were trying to force bounce up to waste time.

That to me was the decision that changed the course of the game. If the ball up had taken place as it should have, more time would have been eaten up and the Eagles may not have got enough momentum going to win the game. It was a perfect example of an umpire guessing who had the ball because he had no way of seeing who had the ball, he was standing on the wrong side of the pack. Too lazy to run to the right position, chose to save energy by bludging in the centre corridor. Lazy umpires are a blight on our game.

The amazing thing is I think you actually believe that is true. The fact that the replay both at normal speed and in slow motion clearly shows the jumper was pulled and in fact McGrath's torso was visible for a moment. The fact that Derek Humphrey-Smith also called it a free kick to McGrath and covered for the officiating umpire by saying he was probably on the wrong angle to see it, all means nothing because obviously you know more about the game than an ex-AFL umpire or a couple of ex-AFL players (Eade & Shaw). Open both eyes and have a proper look at it, you will have the opportunity in about 30 mins or so, if you switch to Fox Footy Active.

You are a true representation of the typical WA fan ...i have been there and witnessed first hand their anal fixation with the Eagles ..it's like no other team exists....take your biased glasses off and have a look at the last quarter performance by the 3 umpires ...only one team was recieving free kicks ..and most were BS ones as well ...yes the Eagles superior fitness got them back into the game ..but the 3 umpires got them over the line

The free kick count i believe was 6 to 2 in the last quarter. Considering West Coast dominated the last quarter possesion wise you would expect that to be in the positive, more so considering Carton were trying to eat up time by trying to force ball ups at the stoppages.


WLF covered 3 decision in the last quarter from the game BTW

2 were errors

The Embley mark for Carlton and the deliberate out of bounds for West Coast.

The Scotland was was also addressed as correct

And how about the reported high contact on Rosa, no free kick given and it resulted in a goal to Carlton.


Don't get me wrong. Carlton played really well and probably deservered to win overall but to suggest that the umpires altered the result of the game by getting West Coast "over the line" is not paying a lot of respect to the way West Coast played in the last quarter

Yes you were in front, but there was one minute left on the clock. Plenty of time to move the ball down the other end and kick a goal. No-one has denied that Rosa probably should have got a free kick given the current interpretations, but the umpires more than made up for that in the last quarter paying every holding the ball decision they could against Carlton, based on different interpretations of the rule each time.

Yes you won and you should have. The fact that it was only 10 points against the team sitting 15th and there were a number of iffy umpiring decisions that resulted in at least 4 of the Eagles last quarter goals, should be ringing alarm bells in the West. It is not enough to say that it is a good team that wins even when playing badly, because if Carlton and Geelong can open up 7 & 9 goal leads respectively, what will some of the quality sides do to the Eagles if they adopt similar game plans. I dare the Eagles to give Sydney a 7 goal start.

The Rosa free kick has nothing to do with the momentum generated in the last quarter by those umpiring decisions, the Rosa one was in the 2nd or 3rd quarter, if you want to go over the whole game just look at the overall free kick count. We are discussing the last quarter decisions not the whole game.

Sorry, the title of the thread is "Umpiring Abysmal", didn't realise you were only talking about the last quarter. Of course you wouldn't be concerned about the other three quaters because you won those.
My point is that while you carry on about a 50/50 free kick when we had already taken the lead, there were other more obvious free kicks that didn't go West Coasts way, such as the Rosa free kick (3rd quarter by the way) or a deliberate out of bounds that wasn't paid cause the umpire thought it came off Cousins when it clearly didn't (4th quarter in our forward 50).
At the end of the day you can analise these things to death and will find decisions that were not correct both ways. It happens in every game. It wont change the result.
What Carlton need to focus on is how they let a side back in when they were up 44 points in the third.
What West Coast need to focus on is how we let you get there in the first place.

I don't think Carlton supporters are arguing about the free kick tally. It is where and when they gave you guys the free kicks that matter. The free's that counted at the end of the day were in your forward half of the ground.

1. The holding the ball decision against Scotland was appalling. Any day of the week that wouldn't have been paid and if you think the decision was correct then I suggest you go and read the rule book just like the Umpires need to. THERE WAS NO PRIOR OPPORTUNITY!!!

2. BUT, there was a clean holding the ball decision that wasn't paid earlier on in the quarter as well, against Kerr I think, which resulted in play on and the Eagles kicking a goal.

3. Embley's mark directly in front of goal was disgraceful. Should have been a free kick to Macca, it was just that the umpire was on the wrong side of play and didn't see it properly.

These decisions all resulted with goals which resulted in West Coast winning by 10 points. I know that the Eagles being a better team factored into the result as well but those decisions are decisions that really stood out to me!! Absolute BULL$HIT!

Carlton supporters are used to the Umpires giving the team a bath because it happens every week so it really didn't surprise me, however, it is disappointing to say the least!!!

As I always say, "Put ya glasses on ya white/yellow/red/orange/green (whatever colour the uniform is) MAGGOT!"

Hmm. Looking at the replay, your player dives on the ball and makes no attempt to get it out (plenty of space behind him to do so) and quite rightly gets pinged for holdig the ball. Fair call imho.

Hangon. Hunter punched the ball perfectly out of his hands and barely touched Houlihan. Forgive my ignorance but what does him not facing the ball have to do with it? It's not as though he took the player out and the ball went out as a result.

Well, I think he had time to get rid of it and even if it wasn't paid the ball spilled free and we ended up with it, hence why we played on so quickly.

One that you didn't mention was the 50m awarded against Fev which I thought was pretty average - must have been for backchatting the umpire or something?
