It's clear why India don't want to use the DRS.

Without it, they can continue to appeal constantly and vociferously, even when they know it is not out, in the hope they can pressure the umpire into making a mistake.

And it worked beautifully well today, twice it would appear.

As said earlier, it is all but cheating. But it is the way of the sub-continental teams and has been for years.

Why, he lives there.

What if he was from Melbourne and we called him the "Melbourne midget". Yep it's really racist.

You might need to think about that more.

Any negative comments associated with race or location of birth is racist.

The midget part associated with location of birth makes it a racist comment.

One of the problems Australians have is that they don't even know they are being racist.

Decided to be technical and go with the dictionary...lol!!!

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/racism

rac·ism   [rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA
noun
1.
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.
a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.
hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
Origin:
1865–70; < French racisme. See race2 , -ism

Geoff Lawson said today in more or less words that the Indians don't use it because Tendulker doesn't like it. What the Mumbai Midget says, goes. Overrated cricketer; overrated bloke.

often overlooked how average a guy Tendulkar is. Good player, shit person. Point blank lied to the ICC over the Symonds/Harbi pitch discussion.

people seem to mistake his graceful play for a good human being. He is a lonnnggg way from a nice guy.

Actually, you're the one who'e not sure here. He's a midget who lives in Mumbai. No different to being from London. Just describes where he lives. Most of us can tell that. It's not hard. Basically he being called a short-ass. Calling someone short doesn't make you racist.

Rocky Marciano was called the "Brockton Blockbuster". What's the difference?.............None!!!!!!!! Pretty easy to work out.

Yes!

My idea of racism is when you denigrate a race as based as being inferior. Using the black is only racist when in that context. to call someone a "black C" is not necessarily racist. The context is that he is a "C" and black only describes him. Like calling someone a "redheaded or fat C". You're calling them "C's" not denigrating them because they are a redhead, fat or black. That only describe them.

All about the context which it is is used. 90% of the population just don't get that right. Media use it to gain headlines and suck in many people.

Generally good post.

That's not quite right. It's racist because it's been used as a term of denigration and by those wielding the power for centuries. It's about the cultural baggage that term carries and it's solely to do with the context that its been used in throughout history. And as a tool of political and/or social oppression. As a contrast, 'white c***' doesn't carry that baggage. Tis rude but not racist to the same degree.

You have explained why Australians don't even understand they are being racist when they are.

The difference is that midget is a negative connection. You referenced his place of birth. If you just called him a midget - that is calling him a short arse. Saying something negative.

You have mentioned where he lives as if that was a negative as well.

I guess you guys don't remember Hussey, Clark, Ponting, Gilchrist and co going up like there was no tomorrow when Sangakkara was given out caught off the helmet down in Hobart when he was 192 and everyone blaming Rudi.

It's easy to blame the umpires rather than call the players you support cheats.

Whereas when the shoes is on the other foot it's easy to call the Indians cheats isn't it?

In this thread, people confuse literary devices for racism. Maybe we should use Motherf-ing Midget. I tell ya those inscrutable indians.

I'm sick of hearing about this racism bullshit. You'll never hear an Australian play that card in such a dispute. Any Indian who plays said card is projecting, pure and simple.

I know how history like to described it, and not disagreeing with that aspect, but you're still not denigrating them by their race, you're describing them by it, which to me, is different completely. I can roll in thick mud and I could be described as black. The denigration is the word "C" not the word "black". A "C" is a "C" whether they're black, white, pink, purple or orange. That's equality, the total opposite of racist. Being black doesn't automatically make you a bigger "C".

I think society needs to advance on that aspect.

That's an interesting point. It's amazing to see the teams that vigorously appeal a caught behind or lbw, only to refuse to refer it to the DRS when it is turned down. If they don't want to refer it they obviously don't think it's out so why the hell are they appealing??

In our respective communities we have a responsibility to tackle intolerance where ever we see it, the problem is we first have to admit we’re intolerant ourselves. I’ll happily admit to being intolerant of some people, it’s still prejudice and one that I should work on. A little self-awareness of our own personal flaws would go a long way to fixing some of the major problems we have with dealing with intolerance in Australia.

All that said, Australia is a much friendlier place to migrants and minority groups today than it was 25 years ago.

And how is that preferable to NO bad decisions?

DRS does not deliver NO bad decisions, it is not flawless. it does however provide a tool to remove the 'howlers' as we say, but until the ICC instill this technology as mandatory, we just have to accept the status quo and move on :thumbsu:

Look up the dictionary meaning.

Short-ass is the negative, Mumbai is where they live. We learn nouns and adjectives as kids. Only if the whole population of Mumbai were short-asses would you then have a valid point but I somehow doubt it.

Description and denigration.....so different in meaning, unless I've learned the wrong language. Check that in the dictionary too.

Yes, but it's how the term was used in the past (and is still used) that carries the meaning. The literal meaning or definition is largely irrelevant, it's the paylod it carries. And that payload is systematic abuse, persecution, oppression, violence and discrimination. You see a descriptive term; my wife sees the leering Afrikaner police who hurled the same insult before beating her father to a pulp.

I'd say that Australians as a whole are largely ignorant of racism.

So if a person is a c*** regardless of colour, why is there a need to call him a black c***?

Look, I think racism is called too often by some and not recognised enough by others. And specifically to the Mumbai Midget reference - it's not the only thread he's used it in today.

And that is the lack of understanding about Australians with racism.

If one comment you make has a negative connotation then if pro quo; by association, the average reader is left to think the other comment you are making is a negative comment.

Thus we are left to read that you think both midget and coming from Mumbai are negatives.

Thus the racism. Or the perceived racism. And perception is the new reality.
