Hey pazza, are the ump appointments publicly available? One of the many issues with the problematic PlayHQ is the umps don't appear with the player lists.

Clubs get the appointments for all games, but haven’t seen them shared anywhere.

Even the EFL umpires association used to share theirs every week and no longer do.

Can’t understand the overlords at HQ who decided to have only two field umpires at Trinity today! Grrrr. Surely B grade deserves better if other grades lower are getting more umpires appointed to their games!!!

from what I her, ammos struggling to keep quality umps! spoke with Ammo coach of D2 last weekend said standard they get every week is abysmal!
Maybe I should come out of retirement!

Well done to you earlier Pazza, and good to see Nick up there this afternoon.

A fantastic game from Silf, Tom and Goughie, as we've come to expect. And I'm so proud of Pat, he's worked so hard. Always had faith in him even when he didn't seem to have it himself. A great partner to have between the big sticks.

Thanks mate. Think the body is paying for it this morning!

From the VAFAUA facebook page:

VALE Shane Herbert
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Shane Herbert.
Shane Herbert goal umpired with the VAFAUA and then went on to coach the group for many years in the early 2000’s. Shane was then an assistant coach to Bernie Jephson, regularly attending matches as an observer.
The VAFAUA extends our deepest condolences to Shane’s friends and family and as always, if anyone needs any support at this sad time, please reach out.

Sad news.

Sure-handed calico waver and a very good coach both at the VAFA and Northern Football League.

The news is heartbreaking.

Did see Shane in Geelong Hospital 2 Saturdays ago so was able to say goodbye physically.

I have a lot of great memories. It was Shane as coach who gave me my first A Grade game in 2000. We have lost a great coach/assistant coach but more importantly a great friend.

It has been a truly sad few weeks across the umpiring ranks past and present.

It starts with the passing of Brian Bulluss, who coached the field umpires in the early 2000s.
We have discussed Shane Herbert above.
And as of Monday morning we can add a third.

Garry Baumgarten.

Garry umpired in the VAFA in the early 1990s before becoming coach fora few years. Coached the Eastern FL goal umpires for a decade before returning to the VAFA in recent years as an assistant coach. He passed away in the early hours of Monday morning.

3 fine men.

Been home a short period of time since Shane's funeral. Was a great service.

Question to those that are knowledgeable on all things umpiring, be it the modern fluoro oddball variety or the long gone but not forgotten men in white version. Who is the best umpire to blow a whistle and why ?

We had an ump do a game a few weeks back who (I'm told) has done a near record number of A grade Grand finals or something like that. Forget the fluorescent clad man's name, anyhow look forward to hearing who people say is best ever ?

Looks a strange hobby from a distance but clearly we can't kick the bag of air around without them so three cheers to them all...
