Umpiring today ..

Probably the best umpired grand final I have seen for many years.

You can't have umpires being caught up in the game and therefore being whistle happy in the match. So to that extent, I think the AFL would have been justified in selecting Allen, McLaren and Goldspink as the field umpires..blokes who know what happens in grand finals.

The only questionable free kick was that one in the first term to Jolly, but, to say that was a clinching decision the game would be the wrong thing to say.

No, what I dont want is the umpires paying soft, stupid free kicks in the ruck, then when it gets to a marking contest, anything goes

They paid a couple of absolute shockingly soft free kicks today, and ignored some blatant ones, most obvious to all was the no holding the balls

They enforced some laws strictly, others lightly, some not at all. Thats not good umpiring
Like somone else said earlier, if you read the rule book you will find there was no real opportunities to pay holding the ball.

I spent the afternoon in the company of many drunk West Coast supporters, and not once did anyone crack the sh*ts about the umpiring.

great effort today, shows how good aussie rules can be when the players are allowed to just play.

That is so true. Let them play. I seem to yell this at each game I go to when they pick up on technical frees.
I thought the umpiring in all the finals I watched was generally the best for the year. The umpires seem to let them play. The grand final umpiring was very good.

Yeah, I agree.

Better for them to under-umpire than blowing 50 frees a game and driving everyone mad with technical decisions, half of which no-one can understand anyway.

Those complaining about the GF being ruined as a "spectacle" because of the umpires NOT paying a truckload of soft/technical ones would probably be the first to complain if the game was "ruined" by over-umpiring.

The umps were relatively inconspicuous in the GF and that's the way it should always be IMO.

your team just copped a swift kick where it hurts, we aren't going to take anything you say seriously while you're still recovering :p
Nobody ever takes anything that Frodo says seriously. It was a very well umpired game and its interesting that the only people who are complaining are West Coast supporters.

For which they might be entitled to a little slack. When you lose by 4 points it is unargueable that you will be able to quote a decision/non decision that would have changed that.
I actually sat and watched the tape today, of course knowing the result. I wouldn't recommend it to supporters of either side for a couple of months and not without a pre-booked paramedic. Not the umpiring but the shanked kicks, dropped marks, posters etc. Whew!
