Whilst I've seen worse, I do agree with that. It's amazing to watch old games from the eighties to see how quickly umps would call for a bounce.

It's not a decision that you'd show 15 times on AFL360 and fail to come up with an explanation for, but it's probably a wrong decision which led to a goal. Pies players culpable for not forcing a ball up, but they shouldn't have been in that position.

Not convinced at all.

I'm now even more confused about when a player will get pinged for holding the ball.

Those free kicks against Witts were ridiculous. How do you call a shepherding free kick against a ruck during a ruck contest?
Pretty easily Bruno. If you make the opposition your focus and block his run at the ball its a shepard against you.

What?

Keep making whatever peripheral points about a third man up you like for all I care - but the basic fact still remains that Witts' sole intention (and action) was to prevent Ryder's ability to run at the ball.

That's a free kick every time, and I'm glad it was actually paid (which is a rarity in Paddy's case) on a few occasions yesterday.

You know what Witts' sole intention was do you?

If you're a ruckman engaging the other ruckman and you don't attempt to win the hitout, then yeah, it's a pretty easy guess.

I umpired a few under 10 games the year before last. Even that was not easy. Aussie rules moves friggen quick and at every contest there is a rule that could work against either opponent ... and then there are mitigating circumstances such as if you go back with the flight and have your eyes on the ball it's ok and if you don't it's not.

I think Leigh Matthews nailed it a few weeks ago. The umpires probably have the worst view. Furthermore, ability to bounce the ball and athletic ability are a big part of selection. AFL is such a big sport now I think investing in the umpiring department is over due.

I think we could have all boundary umpires as proper umpires able to make decisions in play this way the three field umpires can run up and down the middle in just one sector of the ground. The boundary umpires will pick up a lot, like throws, deliberate OOB and who dragged the ball back in! I think goal umpires should be able to pay off the ball decisions for rough stuff and scragging off the ball.

There should also be an umpires coach sitting 2nd deck on either wing to watch from up there and have a screen with the ability to immediately rewind things that just happened allowing a quick reversal of shite decisions.

They should also be wired up like the soccer umps so that they can communicate much quicker to avoid the ugly image of them all coming together for a chat and even saying things like "I'm unsighted" as something is happening so someone else will make the decision, or even saying what you think the decision is and if no one objects in a second making the decision.

If that audio stream was recorded a lot of questions about umpiring decisions could be answered by replaying the incident with the audio of umpires making up their minds. It would also improve the coaching of them.

The way I see it is that young talented umpires come into the system they do the boundary and as an umpire gets more experience (and slows down) they migrate to middle of the ground umpiring. Then best umpires become umpire coaches and the eye in the sky umps.

Finally after having removed a lot of the athleticism of umpiring I would also remove the bounce. Yes there is a quaint charm about it, however, it removes one more skill other than being a great decision maker from the umpire's lot.

Good natured thread, but nah **** em.

Doesn't excuse the atrocious Monfries/Baguley decision which nearly cost us the game over there, or the SEVERAL diabolical decisions that DID cost us the game against Geelong.

Christ, had that game been umpired correctly we'd have one foot in September right now.

Only after consistently good umpiring will I applaud them - because at the moment it is woeful.

I actually thought we had the rub of the green a bit on Sunday. Not going to complain, but i wouldnt say they had their best day. Didnt influence the result but i thought they gave some soft ones both ways and then ignored obvious frees, a couple that helped us along.

So pay the other 30 against Witts then.

They are very inconsistent with it. Ryder gets them alot because ruckman are constantly trying to block his run, but as you say if they pay 1 they should pay them all.

Nah, didn't rate yesterday. Was still ordinary.

We just didn't cop anywhere near the poor rub of the green that has been the norm in a few other games this year (Geelong, Sydney especially).

on the one hand i was pleased with the implementation of this new fangled 'incorrect disposal' rule.

On the other, they probably won't pay it ever again, and as a whole they were still shit. That's twice in the last 3 weeks one of our players has been clotheslined in mid air trying to mark the ball and it's been waved on

One rule that has been totally forgotten is front on contact in a marking contest, 3-4 times for both teams yesterday it could have been paid.

One rule that i thought didnt exist anymore was the kicking in danger one against fletch.

So pay the other 30 against Witts then.

I'd respectfully suggest you let it go. But, if for whatever reason you can't, then you need to go back and watch the game again. You'll find these "30" incidents that you've convinced yourself about simply didn't happen.

Enimies becoming friends? See Little sitting next to Fitzpatrick.

Don't trust these umpires that look to have crawled out of Auswitz for 1 second.

The non Monfries free last week lead to a sea-change of umpiring interpretation - You have prior opportunity and incorrectly dispose of the ball it's a free - This happened across all games.
