I thought it was weird that Sportsbet were offering 5 to 1 odds of a free kick being paid to West Coast at 23:46 minute mark of the second quarter.
What you didn't get on?

A mate from Kolkata gave me the heads up.

I tried to but because I was wearing my rose coloured glasses I thought West Coast was Melbourne and bet on the wrong game. I assume umpire Schmidt is going to lose his thumbs over my blunder.

Umpires definitely favour one team over the other at certain times in the game, probably more subconscious than a conscious decision and not really cheating
The much more likely answer here is at times supporters suppose umpires are favouring the opposition over their own team and so develop a belief umpires are not good at their job and have developed subconscious favouring of the "other" team.

Supporters don't realise that they are biased, be it subconsciously or not, so believe their assessment of umpire bias is correct and objective.

While your theory is possibly correct on the odd occasion by far and away the more common answer is supporters don't know what they are talking about and are all over the shop when it comes to assessing umpire performance.

It's a pity so many are blind to the reality of the officiating of our great game.
These guys earn over 160K to do what they do, and if they make so many inconsistant decisions in real jobs they would be moved on. Quickly.
The problem starts at the top. The inconsistency has been evident for years, and not been addressed. That means the hierarchy are in on the fix.
No doubt dollars are made on these decisions, match fixing is rife in soccer, cricket and basketball. What makes us think our game is immune?
Unless there has been a rise in sales of rose coloured glasses, then we are not.
Love a good conspiracy theory. Even the crazy ones.

I don't give a shit what your follow up question is. I know TD and you need to back the hell off.
Hey JMac

Dave is not a protected poster here. We have plenty of chats with him and he is generally happy to be given an alternate view especially if his own view is a bit out on the edge. You do Dave a disservice to his posting if you want to censor discussion of his opinions. There was nothing untoward here.

Umpires are human too, it's literally impossible for them to be completely unbiased even if they try to be. When a team is staging a comeback or the crowd is going crazy it all impacts their decision making, plus the individual players involved themselves.

Until we perfect AI umpires it's just a reality we have to face that umpires will remain far from perfect... cheating is a whole other ballgame though

I would agree with you if the question had come from any other poster.

Agree with that, they are not perfect. At the same time we supporters are less knowledgable about the rules, spend far less time and thought pondering and discussing interpretations, are further from the action and are much more emotionally involved and biased than the umpires.

On that basis it's more likely when we call them out it is we who are emotionally biased and wrong in our interpretation than the umps.

But many would disagree with you though (and yes I accept this is not a conversation for this thread)

I think you also do him a disservice. He is well and truly capable of assessing himself whether a post is an unreasonable go at him. If he feels it is he takes it through the correct channels and that is dealt with by the mods. He correctly uses these avenues at times but this would not be visible to the rest of the board. Many other posters do likewise.

He doesn't need other people jumping in and assuming he should be aggrieved before he has even replied to the post. He makes up his own mind and that's how it should be.

You say he was spun 360. So what ? That ain't a rule.
Media and fans like to think that's a rule but it means nothing as does the fan rule .. Pay it to the man in front in a marking contest. Also not a rule.

To be fair the rules and interpretations of the rules change on a year-by-year basis it's nearly impossible to know exactly what the right call to make is in every contest.

Even the Football "experts" are unsure about a lot of the contentious decisions. I have a lot of empathy for AFL umpires, couldn't be a harder game to umpire in the world... Very complicated rules that change year by year, a massive wall of players surrounding every play, extremely fast game, very long games and there's a huge amount of grey areas in the rules.

Love to know how much they get paid because it's not enough even if we love to hate them they have an impossible job.

A lot of angst comes from blokes being spun 360 and casually dropping the footy to their teammates, or simply dropping the footy the moment they're tackled, which is something Hawthorn have perfected. While the existing rules should cover this, the umps often don't pay incorrect disposal and I think changing/tightening the rules would make things clearer for fans and umpires.

Make it a 2 fold rule

- with prior opportunity, if you're tackled and don't kick or handball it's a free kick

- without prior opportunity, if you're tackled and the ball comes lose, except via a kick or handball it's a free kick

I still call bullshit!

Your dog shouldn't be allowed to be auto wicky. Every time you snick the ball he drops it, every time I snick it he catches the bloody thing!!!!
No one is allowed to be automatic wicky. Defeats the purpose of the term "automatic". However don't get me started on the "one hand, one bounce" rule.

...or the time honoured 6 and out. No different to the success tax in the AFL.
I dont see too many accountants climbing the back fence and dueling with next doors mut to retrieve their calculator

No but some of the AFL boffins should definitely have their balls taped
