So we have to play the perfect game according to the vague grey rules of the AFL...while our oppo get away without doing so! Rules for some! There’s no doubt umpires lean towards not calling frees against Richmond opponents however I do believe our players bring a little bit of it on themselves with some extremely dumb footy on a number of occasions each match. The clumsiness and at times stupidity of some of our tackles and pushing on opponents (I’m thinking nankervis, Pickett, Cotchin when he was playing, and there are others) just gets the umpires backs up against us in a general sense. It definitely adds to the problem and I am so sick of seeing that level of recklessness. It fuels dumb footy and reminds me of tigers circa 2012-16 when I would come away most weeks and just be thinking “dumb Richmond”. We may have even been labelled that? Possibly by Hardwick?
Now that we aren’t contending maybe it’s time for a bit more sportsmanship and trying to actually get better within the rules. I absolutely hate stand rule and all the changes but that is the game now so might as well play to the rules. I’m not saying roll over I’m saying be strong and fair and stop with the over the top “setting a standard” which is actually just stupidity. I’m so sick of seeing our players just wilfully giving frees away.
A change of attitude might trigger a few more calls against oppo.
In my experience playing sport umpires look after the players they perceive are trying to play the best they can within the rules.
I get that but I think the club needs to smarten up. Instead of being victims of the afl let’s just get better is what I’m saying. Not perfect but there were a couple of tackles and pushes on the weekend that were essentially our players saying “here, have a goal”So we have to play the perfect game according to the vague grey rules of the AFL...while our oppo get away without doing so! I want to see smart football instead and we do have players who epitomise that (vlastuin, dusty, Riewoldt when he was playing, Prestia is usually pretty good).

You are so right. I cannot disagree with anything you said there and it is upsetting to watch it week in and week out. Makes me sick too. Anyone who watches us regularly will notice we don't get given obvious frees many many times every week.I get what you are saying RP. Nank, Grimesy and Pickett in particular lack any form of subtlety. I do shake my head at times at our stupidity.
However, how do you explain the Rioli 50? We seem to cop at least one or two of those each week. The opposition run over the mark, grab our blokes to stop them playing on but all good apparently.
Then there is the different holding the ball interpretation for the RFC. Opposition sides are free to drop, throw, spin 360, whatever. Our players usually don't get prior, can be tackled head high, pushed in the back but you had better dispose of the football legally within .1 of a second or else.
The other one that seems to have a RFC tax is down the field. Our players make slight contact with an opposition player when he is about to kick and the umps are dam quick to pay downfield. This season in particular, I have watch opposition players just fall over to draw a downfield. Likewise, when the situation is reversed......crickets.
You have only guesses...like the rest of us supporters...as to what the Umpires are looking for within a footy game! You are so right. I cannot disagree with anything you said there and it is upsetting to watch it week in and week out. Makes me sick too. The Rioli incident was just stupid and obviously wrong.
I am just trying to build from that position towards something productive.
We need to do something about it. It is really hurting our results, especially now we have come right back to the pack. I think instead of adopting a victim or conspiracy mindset we need to see it as an opportunity to change the culture of our club a little bit and the way we are being perceived. I want to see smart footy and not dumb footy. I think the club and players are still pissed off about how it has been treated by the afl and the umpires and you can see that anger in the way they play. They need to move on is what I am basically saying and refocus on playing hard but within the rules. They need to give less dumb and aggressive frees away and they need to make an effort to play within the rules.
The umpires are not looking after us for a reason. Some here will say it is blatant corruption and that they are instructed to do so. I doubt it. I think it's more of a human reason. Umpires don't like players who blatantly disregard rules and play with a chip on their shoulder. That's true in any sport and for all time.
I'm saying it's time to move on and to try a new approach that just plays within the rules and with respect for everyone out there on the field. The culture around the game is changing and umpires are not going to "look after us" if they see ridiculous moments of "rule breaking". No more clumsy late hits that were actually on purpose. No more behind play rubbish or pushing after a player has disposed of it. Umpires get an overall feel for if a team is trying to stay within the rules or if they're not and their decisions are impacted more by that than anything else. We have a bad reputation and that explains basically everything.
At least that's something we can control. Or maybe we just wait for a couple more seasons before we pull our socks up so we can let the umps get our top picks for us?
and no mention of the riloi 50 meter penalty or the danniher dragging on youngs arm to claim a free kick seconds into the game??So there is evidence they got the to far wrong and the Hipwood one wrong when the umpire in front of the camera had clear line of site, so why isn't the club issuing a please explain? Its 2 clear wrong decisions. This is what I want as a supporter who has sat through this umpiring BS for 8 years straight now. Not bloody crickets. Hell Geelong won a free kick count and still complained the other week and got an audience with the AFL. Why are we so quiet?

AFL Concedes on Tiger Umpire Bias
22nd May 2024
In a break from typical AFL dialog, AFL Football Operations Manager Laura Kane has conceded that there is a significant umpire bias within Richmond games.
"The club has come to us a number of times in relation to the free kick disparity experienced by Richmond" Laura Kane said today. "The complaints have been frequent and ongoing since the 2017 season. Upon review, it has been apparent that there is a clear difference in the interpretation of certain grey areas in the game, such as the prior opportunity rule" she said.
"The umpiring fraternity have also taken liberties with the 15m kick mark rule, often calling play on when kicks have clearly travelled 25 metres for Richmond players, yet paid marks when the opposition has kicked the ball as little as 6 metres.".
When asked why there has been such a bias against one club Laura Kane explained that without the bias, the AFL competition would have been stuck in a repetitive finals series situation where Richmond wins flags, and Geelong get nothing. She highlighted the lengths the AFL had to go through in the 2022 finals series with a conscientious score review decision to get Richmond out of the finals series to allow Geelong to finally break through for the coveted premiership cup. Laura pointed out that during the home and away series, Richmond, having conceded a considerable lead to Geelong after Dion Prestia was felled off the ball, managed to come back and take the lead late in the game. It was only some inventive umpiring including a deliberate out of bounds decision paid against Shane Edwards who kicked while being slung 360 degrees, and a reversal after a Reiwoldt mark 25m out that allowed Geelong to steal the points. At the time, Dion Prestia was the best player afield, so it was obvious that the writing was on the wall again for the 2022 final series despite how many rules the AFL changed to stop the Damian Hardwick led juggernaut.
When pressed on why the AFL was ready to concede the obvious bias now, Laura Kane highlighted the issue this has created come the National Draft.
"We have reviewed the games earlier in the year, and in particular the Carlton and Port Adelaide games and realised that without umpire intervention, Richmond would have triumphed on both occasions. This presents us with a situation where a club, which quite frankly is loaded with picks for the 2024 draft, clearly isn't as bad as the ladder position currently reflects. On this basis, we will need to review the draft picks held by the Richmond Football Club, and re-allocate them accordingly. We can't have a situation where a club like Richmond tampers with the integrity of the National Draft by getting shafted by the umpires. It becomes unfair for teams who legitimately accumulate picks while getting a fair run from the umpires" Laura said today.
The AFL is expected to make a decision on the Selections Richmond will be able to retain, and where these selections will be within the 2024 National
the whole show is cringe cfl agenda pushing under the guise of "humour"I wish Mick had gone harder on Laura Kane. All she did was say they don’t hate Richmond and then deflected the whole thing by giving him an umpires shirt.
She never answered his question about could she explain why our differential had been so bad for so many years. Should have kept at her until she gave a satisfactory answer.
Then bloody Andy Maher pipes up and says the umpires do a great job and are a really important part of the game. What a suck. Enough to make you throw up.![]()
Sheeples really do like their undisturbed routines...I am more disappointed that our fans at the game don't have banners or choose to do something collectively as a club. Other codes put us to shame in this respect.
But Australians really do as we are told whether its sport or politics
how do you predict at 100% accuracy like thisDreamtime will be 22-14. On the face of it, not too bad, but we will be 14-4 down at half time and will get some cheap ones when the game is well and truly over in the second half. There will definitely be a BS 50m leading to a Bombers goal. And a couple of arm chops in front of goal for 2 meter Peter. Enjoy the game all, I’ll be watching re-runs of Ninja Warrior.
Ha ha it’s just statistics. Mathematically that is the most likely outcome!!!!!how do you predict at 100% accuracy like this
