yep no grey area in that rule, controlling umpire deemed it a 50 as well, no need to check if his colleagues had a bet on the Swans to win by 12 or under.

It's really that it is now acceptable for the umpires to actually consciously go against the rules that gets me. Then why have rules at all. Just a set of suggestions about how the game should be played and let the umps do whatever. Add to the spectacle not knowing what decision is being made or why. Sort of where we are anyway, but with a set of 'rules' they are supposedly following.

I've said it before and will say it again, there is no conspiracy against us from the umpiring department. We've played right up to the limit of the rules for a while now and while we were the best in the business we were able to cover for our indiscretions and they didn't hurt us as much as they do now when we're giving away a lot of the same frees and 50m penalties that we were back then.

However, instead of people looking at the real reasons that we're on the wrong end of the umpiring, it seems that it's easier to say oh umpire X hates us and always gives frees against us and never gives any to us, or the umpiring department have it in for us because we were too successful.

The playing on edge is what got us over the edge between making finals in the 2013-2015 years and the premiership successes of 2017-2020. It's what gave us that swagger and confidence that we could face any team and come out on top. Now we've got to work out if we continue to play on the edge or we take a step back and become more umpire 'friendly' so that we can win a free kick count every now and then.

Personally, I want us to keep pushing the limit of the rules because I believe it's when we play our best footy and it will be IMO one of the reasons we get back to being a genuine premiership contender again.

I disagree. In finals from 2017-2020 our free kicks were 220-223. Same team. Same style. Same rules. But umpires don’t pay ‘soft’ frees in finals, and that’s where we get screwed. We receive very few soft frees but umpires can’t blow the whistle quick enough to penalise us if they see anything resembling a free.

If you can explain 50/50 in finals but getting screwed in H&A then I’m all ears.

We are out of the 8 with Pies breathing down our neck,a big opportunity for the umps to use the "indiscipline card" on our players.

Yes, I agree with you. A previous poster was claiming it was our game style and we needed to take responsibility for getting screwed. I was arguing as you are it’s poor umpiring that screws us … whether it be a bit of ‘nudge nudge, wink wink’ to make life harder due to Dimma’s comments or winning too much etc… or it’s just a
matter of us not being good enough at drawing soft frees …. it’s ridiculous to be even having to talk about revising the way we play to get soft frees in this brutal game of AFL. Too woke for my liking atm.

There was an incident (2nd qtr?) where a free was paid to the tigers, the ball had come out to George, who gathered the ball, but had 2 oppo players about to tackle him, yet the ump called Advantage, and George is immediately tackled and ball up. No thought given by the umpire that he'd made a mistake and there was no advantage to us, and to take the ball back for the original freekick to be taken.

George did screw that up though.
He is often a selfish player and always goes for glory, which results mostly in OOTF or a behind...

Those are tough ones - George is a pure opportunist and when I saw it (haven't re-seen it so could change my mind) I deemed George to have moved enough to convince the umpire he wanted the advantage - it was what George does and he miscalculated - again! Not saying you are wrong, just different eyes, different angle.

Surely advantage can only be paid if you have possession? I was screaming at the telly (yep - I needed to calm down but the umps performance just ramped up to their final crescendo at the final siren).

You can’t call advantage in a 50:50 loose ball.

Simple solution to the absolute schemozzle that is the 50m penalty for dissent.

Anyone guilty of consent is given 2-minutes in the ‘sin bin’ and is fined. So the team has to play the next 2-mins a man short. And the fines go up in increasing increments. $500 first offence. $1,000 2nd etc….

So it doesn’t give up an immediate goal from a 50m, but the team is still penalised. And if the game is ‘over’ so in theory the player doesn’t care about being sent off, they cop a financial sanction.

Then the problem will be self governed, as how long will a coach tolerate players dissenting and leaving the team a player short. And players hate being off the ground and hate losing cash … it will stop it in its tracks.

And all fines go towards junior umpire development programs.

So he is chasing a loose ball with 2 x oppo players hot on his heels. And despite never ever having control of the ball the umpire decides he has taken advantage - I’m sure he didn’t realise it was our free, but even if he did, how the F is chasing a loose ball in a contest advantage..?? Terrible umpiring error.

And despite never ever having control of the ball the umpire decides he has taken advantage - I’m sure he didn’t realise it was our free, but even if he did, how the F is chasing a loose ball in a contest advantage..?? I'm not arguing that it's poor umpiring as the umpires are calling the game as per the rules, the difference is that generally in finals when you've got the most experienced and/or best performed umpires from the season calling games they don't call the technical free kicks that get called during the season as they're more inclined to let the players play as they understand that nobody is there for a whistlefest, they're there for a good hard fought game of footy.

We don't get shafted by the umpires, we get shafted by our own style of play, which is built around being successful in finals footy. So you can say it's the umpires shafting us if it makes you feel better, but the truth is that if we didn't play on the edge like we do we'd be giving away much fewer frees, but unlikely to be receiving many more due to the fact we don't play for free kicks, we just get on with it.
