Roast Umpiring

Geelong were better and would have won regardless but at during the time they got the run on the fact is they got a run of free kicks that is almost unheard of and I think it had more to do with the umpires trying to show who was in control but all they did was make a mess of things. But during this time we lost both rucks and as a result our forward structure went straight to hell and we were getting smashed in the middle all this against a dammed good team.

Last season Essendon started on fire then fell away because of injury and many accepted it last night we started well enough to be in the game but injuries cruelled us in the second half.
Fair enough, but we were also horribly ill-disciplined and if you show no discipline, you will get free kicks against you. We got what we deserved from Geelong and the umpires. Just my opinion though. I'm not sure whether it's my new reserved seat at home games that allows me to see things better than what I usually have in the past or not?

Less beers ?

Hw as Vickery knocked silly, was there a free in that?

No head clash with Johnson Ty just came of worse nothing in it.

The one I couldn't understand was West jumped in the ruck contest playing the ball and his knee connected with Marics jaw play on as it should be but not long later Maric playing the ball his arm contacts Wests face and free kick but centre square bounces. There was also quite a number of times when at a boundary throw in the umpire would ask for the nominated ruck where Maric and a Geelong player acknowledged and then a totally different Geelong player would contest the throw in.

I admit we were un-disciplined during that period but we were also not getting any frees I can recall Ellis getting ridden into the ground right in front of the umpire and play on was the call.

The Port v Norf game was bas aswell!! Also theres a video on youtube showing the umpire congratulating Wells after kicking a goal. The goal was kicked from a free the same umpire payed! Seems Legit! image.jpg

I also saw an umpire warn a West Coast player (ruckman, forget his name) before a centre bounce to not go out of the circle. I was under impression umpires were meant to enforce the rules, not give advice to players on how to avoid a penalty?

What is scary is next week the umps will be out to pay back Port and we play Port in Adelaide.

I've got be brutally honest with you guys, that's first game I've been to in 7 years since my best mate died in car accident and it was one of the worst inconsistant umpiring displays I've seen in a long time which cost us a 100 point drubbing IMO...These blokes deserve three or four weeks in a country league for their piss week effort!

If you were there for 7 years you wouldn't be as sensitive . Its has been going on for a while:D

Geelong have been assisted for a while particularly after their recent success. To make matters worse some like selwood look for the free kick to:rolleyes:

Check out the umpire! Giving Wells a "good work" tap on the bum after his goal!!

That is so unprofessional it sickens me.

Had to double check my surroundings at half time. Thought I was at the Melbourne Comedy festival yesterday as the umpiring was a joke.

We definitely got a few soft ones our way in the second half but had the game been a bit closer, could have influenced the game against a stronger outfit (like Collingwood this weekend).

They evened the frees up in the last quarter after Geelong were way in front.

Let us just assume for a minute that the umpires are just occasionally off and having a bad day and if we all look deeply enough that is what we all believe however if the AFL were serious about the perception of bias then they would not have put an ex-coach of any team in as the head of the umpiring department. When things go against whether real or imagined that perception will always sway it towards real in many supporters eyes.

When the AFL finally wise up and make umpires professionals until then we will always have inconsistent umpires who as we see each in a game can have a different interpretation which just leads to inconsistent decisions which leads to player angst and then when a situation arises it quickly escalates and gets completely out of hand.

Even worse is the nominated ruck not even contesting boundary throw ins that happened a few times.

As other posters have mentioned the worst one by far at the moment is in the ruck around the ground. What is the point of nominating a ruckman when another player comes right in over the top and contests the ruck contest???? Have lost count of the amount of times the 'nominated' ruckman holds maric down while the opposition second ruckman comes over the top to have a free hit at the ball. Cost us the game against freo and cost us a few goals last night.

Does not make sense!

Just watched the coburg game and what stood out was the quality of the umpiring. Simple common sense stuff just like the old days. The guys at the top level make it more about themselves than the game. Send Geish and his crew back a grade and bring these blokes up!

I thought the crowd was being overly critical about most decisions. Not that we sounded like West Coast supporters, but the reactions from our supporters were over the top. If you played in front, you generally got the rub of the green. Not hard really.
We dominated the 2nd quarter until the last 5 mins and still didn't get 1 free kick for the quarter. At one point in the 3rd quarter it was 14-4 Geelongs way. 4 frees in 2 and a bit quarters is complete bs.
