I would say even an immortal would be interested in not burning an arm off or biting his/her own tongue off, Since pain is the brains alarm system..WARNING YOUR ARM IS ON FIRE.....I would think so.
By immortal you mean unable to die from any cause I assume.

Losing both arms and both legs, biting off you tongue, having you nose plugged with molten lead, your old fella crushed and scorched in a horrific ironing accident, your eyes poked out whilst sticking your head down an echidna hole etc would leave you a very bored immortal for the rest of eternity and not a very attractive prospective root.
