If thats nots game of the year then someone please show me what game is!!

Unbleivable game! Ive never felt so nervous in all my life and i dont even follow either team!!!

ALLESIO!!!! One of the most maligned players in the league and he kicks the winning goal.

Bad luck to Sydney who controlled the game for 85% of the day. How would Kelly feel kicking into the man on the mark only 20 metres out!

From start to finish that was one of the best matches ive ever had the pleasure of watching.

The umpiring was pretty good...i dont know what the hell all the seesndon fans were booing about - all of sydneys free kicks were there...and essendon were VERY lucky not to have 5-6 holding the balls against them in the last quarter - which is what i said 2 weeks back that they are immune to holding the ball decisions.

Mind you i dont think one holding the ball was paid all day anyway.

Every player on the ground from both sides played very very well. Wellman, Bolton x2, Saddington, Lucas, Johnson, Fletcher, Mcpherson all played fantastic games.

Congrats to bombers
Comiserations to Sydney

Gee i better look out, i might get blamed for having a go at essendon

Was a good game to watch no doubt.

Sydney losing was the best result for Port, but it was still hard to support Essendon. Similar to the Carlton Adelaide match last night, where I ended up just supporting Ray Kelsey and his ridiculous decisions.

yea, all their frees where there - but what about consistency? First half Essendon got the rougher end of the stick no doubt. If we shove a little from the back, then they do, shouldnt the result be the same?

What about those one handed handballs? I guess we should just forget about those.

How a couple 50's werent paid to us was also pretty baffling to say the least as well. Holding a player for pretty much the limit, THEN pushing them down and falling into their back isnt worthy of 50 eh??

Immune to holding the balls? Why? because when port fail to tackle hird, and just bump him he wasnt penalised?

However

I thought the swans were stiff today, they definitely outplayed us for most of the game, however that last quarter was fantastic for us - nearly doubled our entire score in a quarter!

I also reckon people are unfairly harsh on Alessio - I know he isnt Wayne Carey but can be a very handy wildcard type player. Earlier this year he was playing some pretty good footy and it was a shame he got injured.

Im not trying to build him up to a superstar, but I reckon he is handier than many people give him credit for.

He and Mercuri, two players who have copped a bit lately did well today I thought. Alessio bagged 4, and Mercuri did some good things in the last to get us back into it - 9 posessions in a quarter where somebody had to stepup, somebody other than JJ or Hardwick who where great all day.

1st point - Some of the frees Sydney got in the first half didnt cause any effect anyway as they had already run the ball out of the area and advantage was paid straight away. Seeing as the half time stats had Essendon 9 free kicks to Sydney 6 i find no reason for Bombers fans to complain...again.

2nd - one handed handballs? Maybe you should also complain about how Hardwick was caught and just dropped the ball - no free kick, and how Ramanasukas did the same thing...and Jason Johnson...and Mcgrath. Oh thats right - you are fine with THOSE decisions arent you!

3rd - the Kelly non 50...could probably of been paid, even tho Hardwick pulled Kelly down onto himself anyway. How bout the 50 late in the game when Hardwick slipped (which in 98% of games is counted as play on by umpires) then Nicks ran over the mark as he thought it was play on.....very soft 50 that one

4th point - You need your eyes checked. Do you think Hird just got bumped then the umpire blew the whistle straight away??? Are all bomber fans this blind?
Hird got bumped THEN got tackled by two players, Hird pulled the ball underneath him as it got spilled free when he hit the ground, then failed to get rid of the ball. HOLDING THE BALL.
Maybe you should watch that tape again and see HOW HE GOT TACKLED BY TWO PORT PLAYERS.

Remarkable match. Not pretty, but incredible drama!!

I'm still pinching myself.

The umpiring was okay, I thought. Thee may have been some touchy decisions, but tell me a match where there isn't. The only really questionable decision that cost us was in the second term, where the Swans got a goal from a free kick. Apart from that, they were first to the ball, and more disciplined and deserved their lead.

They led the match for 99.9%. Unbelievable. They were certainly the better side for most of the match, and I would have to say they should have won. We stole it, and in the process, found some team spirit and heart that hopefully will carry us into the finals, for a tilt at number 17.

GO BOMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

even better that you were without hird and lloyd

True Macca, but If I was to be totally honest, it was a bit of a fluke.

Still, over the last 4 weeks, we have been involved in four consecutive "close" games. Overall, we have won 2 and lost 2, which is about right. You expect the close games to even out in the end. If we had lost today, it would have meant three narrow losses in a row.

So, even though we were lucky, I think overall, over the last 4 weeks, our 2-2 record is to be expected.

Certainly, though, it shows that any team can beat any other team. We are certainly not the imposing force we were last year, but that win may get us going again.

You came on here making it sound like everything sydney did was fine and it was essendon who where lucky. I just made a couple points to the contrary.

ah, now sydney got some unwarranted frees in the first half but it made no difference because they cleared it anyway.

Yea, a couple times we coulda and shoulda got pinged from dropping it - over the game the umps were pretty even, but the first half I thought we were a bit hard done by.

the 50 could PROBABLY have been paid? It was a clear 50, and back was just jumped right into. Then again port liked doing it to Lloyd everytime he marked - maybe thats the norm in your inferior league, but we apparently have a rule against it in the AFL.

Hird got bumped to the ground, no prior, then a pack formed and a few hands were fighting for the ball. It would be over-officiating to pay a free kick there.

I didnt think the umpiring had an effect on the game, but I didnt think it was all that fantastic going both ways.

Yea, we were lucky, i thought we were outplayed today for the most part.

We arnt playing well, 2-2 is ok but we really have to improve. the main problem I see is our attack on the ball and hardness. I thought Port, Carlton and Sydney beat us pretty convincingly in the hardness department.

Then again, we will definitely improve with the likes of Hird, Lloyd, Barnes (ball killed us), blumfield, Solomon, Rioli and mark Johnson to return in the next couple weeks - hopefully refreshed too. Should Long and Wallis come good they could prove to be bonuses as well.

also - what is it with us and goal posts lately???

Here we go...poor hard done by Lloyd didnt get his 4 or 5 free kicks per game so its all our backmans fault. Maybe you missed it, you must of, but Lloyd clearly pushed Paxman in the back which resulted in Lloyd soccering a goal, he also in the last 25 seconds was all over Paxman. It does go both ways. And as i said at the time - i was at the game - dunno if you were - but Lloyd 'played' for about 7 or 8 free kicks that game.

Ont o teh CURRENT game....the umpiring had no effect on the outcome of the game.
Yes - Some of Sydneys free sin the first half could of been let go as on about 2 or 3 occasions the umpire blew his whistle for a free to sydney as a different sydney player was running away with the ball - subsequently it was called advantage.

Yep, we were lucky, yep, we snatched it. Who f*ckin' cares?, we got the points and i reckon it was a great effort from an inexperienced and undermanned Essendon line up to guts it out to the end. I've been as a big a critic as anyone of Alessio, but credit where it's due. Well done big fella, stood up when we needed someone. Carn the Dons!

where's wally?

Well the essendon fans around me weren't too impressed with the lack of consistancy. ALL of sydneys' frees were there??? Including the one paid to Stafford that all of 3LO's commentators said was play on? The push paid against Rama in the first minute that wasn't paid against Kelly later in the quarter? You mentioned someone needing their eyes checked but it's you in need Macca.

and essendon were VERY lucky not to have 5-6 holding the balls against them in the last quarter

And Goodes wasn't earlier in the match when he tried to run around Bolton and was caught and dropped it? And how many times was a Sydney player caught with the pill and not pinged?

As you said, the umps hardly paid one all day (one I think) so at least they were consistant in that regard.

BTW, the fifty smokin was talking about was on Bolton, not Hardwick. Hit after he marked it then shoved into the ground.

As for immune, Paul Kelly. Great player (gutsiest I've seen) but twice hit a bloke after he marked the football, no fifty either time.

Untouchable.

was the 50 the one in the last quarter?? Didnt you get a goal out of that anyway cos bolton got up and played on??

Anyone who wins a brownlow is basically immune to any holding the ball decisions against them, and they can hold the man, run as far as t hey like and they never get ANY frees against them.

And as i said - about 2 or 3 of sydneys frees in the first half they had easy possesion of the ball anyway and the frees were basically redundant - they didnt need to be paid

Good on you macca, you say you never comment on the Bombers when your team isn't involved, yet you have basically come out & said we only won because of the umpiring decisions.

I am not going to comment on the umpiring because everyone will say I am whinging, but the Bombers definitely did not get any favours from the Umps.

Sydney played brilliantly, but our young guys went all out & our much maligned players, Alessio & Lucas came to the fore when needed & won the game for us.

Go you young guys, you did well today.

So now macca plead your innocence once again that you never have a go at the Bombers in games that don't involve your team.

Just to remind you, after our first loss to the Blues check out the thread "To all arrogant Essendon supporters."

After our second loss to the Blues check out the thread "Essendon are vulnerable".

I think this gives me a right to comment on how unlucky the Saints were yesterday.

Macca lets face it you hate Essendon and are pissed that we won
you always seem to have the answer to everything, think you know all there is about footy..you spend a lot of time talking about Essendon...and defending every team we play.

You seem to have only one point of view------YOURS

everyone else is wrong or is whingeing.
you seem to love Essendon bashing...

Any football comments Mantis or just Big Footy Soap Opera (tm) comments?

If you don't think Essendon were lucky ask yourself how many times P. Kelly would kick into the man from 15 metres out directly in front.....2 goal turnaround right there. It was a good effort by Essendon to keep going and still be in touch when they were clearly outplayed for 3 quarters however. Esssendon's defence and Hardwick in particular can take credit for that.

You can say as much as you want how unlucky St. Kilda were yesterday, they were damn unlucky, but mainly through their own fault by not taking the most of their oppurtunities. Port were lucky to win it, no doubt, with such a dismal effort.

See how normal people can judge their own team as they would judge other peoples team?

However forgive me for interrupting your Macca/PA1870 campaign with comments about football.

port 01
Stay out of this, I am talking to macca, he can talk for himself.
He said he NEVER comments about the Bombers when they aren't playing Port, he just proved that was crap.

Also you say one team was lucky in your game & one was unlucky in our game.

See you in the finals, where we will send you home with you tails tucked firmly between your legs.:D

Well in the end, Essendon had 11 players out and Sydney had a full side. Losing Solomon and M.Johnson before the game, on top of Hird and Lloyd, the boys toughed it out and showed true heart. They never gave up and when the heat was on in the last 10 minutes...Sydney was forced into skill errors, bad decision marking and obvious full-on defensive tactics.

The umpires had ZERO influence on the game. In the end, the Essendon players wanted it more, capitalising as Sydney ran out of puff. They players know that they can play better, but no one can deny their never-say-die attitude.

Sydney had a full side in? Are you sure about this Topdon?

Sandie, I wouldn't gloat over today. Sheedy and co wouldn't exactly be thrilled with how you are playing at the moment.

macca
Still waiting for your reply.

Or are you so gutless that when you know you are wrong you have to get your friends to reply.

Hilly if I was you I wouldn't be getting in to this argument, where is your team at the moment.

How many of our team out there today were under 21? Look it up & be afraid, be very afraid.:D

What has the Kangaroos predicament got to do with Essendon and Sydney? Have you seen me or any other Kangaroo supporters gloating about anything at all this year?
