A good rhythm section in a band. Usually it's the lead singer and guitar hero that get the love, but without a good bassist and drummer they are going to sound like shit, however good they are.
Always used to think "Wtf is the point of the bass guitar, you can barely hear it in songs". Then I heard a few songs with the bass guitar taken out...Huge difference!

So true. I remember the first band I was in, we had no bassist, I was thinking "Why do we need a bass? Sounds good as is." We then got a bassist, and the cohesion and the power and intensity it adds to a band is amazing. Particularly live.
