If this was done on the ABC it would be so much better but instead the material has mostly been wasted now. I'm not saying its terrible just that its disappointing to see something with so much potential be dumbed down so much..

People like you, should never turn the TV off abc. If you don't like commercial tele - stay the **** away.

Oh looky, time for a rerun of Playschool. - Go Play Jemima

Wrong, wrong, wrong;)

If ABC had produced it, then i would assume it would have been a Sue Masters production.

Her Phoenix 1 & 2 and Janus 1 & 2 were perfect examples of how it should have been made. Brilliant shows, and THEN came Blue Murder, then daylight, then Underbelly.

Commercial productions have to be glitzy and not to close to real life.
Not one caracter in Underbelly came close to Phsyco Mal Hennesy (aka - Denis Allen) in Janus. He was scary mad (He played Condelos right hand man in underbelly) And "Abo" in Blue Murder was a great nutter.

Most of the Underbelly caracters made them out to half decent blokes you wouldnt mind having a beer or two with.

They missed the mark with this one.

Huh.
Are you stupid ?

I just made some comments regarding how commercial TV tends to sex up its shows for no reason sometimes.

If you're happy with how Nine have made Underbelly compared to how well it could have been made then thats your problem not mine. Maybe you are part of the demographic that Nine is thinking about when it dumbs down its shows. :D

Blue Murder was made on ABC and is infinitely better and more realistic than Underbelly. That should have been Underbelly's benchmark.

Mate I don't disagree, I just think that you are nitpicking at faults rather than viewing it for what it is - entertainment.

Sure, shortcuts have been taken and it's sexed up to boot - No problem in my book. But as you have mentioned, it was made for the commercial t.v viewer (who really couldn't be ****ed having to think 24hours a day - and of which i am one of many) rather than those who claim to be more intellectual (but fear shadows of the sun) who watch non commercial tv.

It's all a subjective matter of opinion and I like it whether you think it is shite or not.

As for Sue Masters - I love her work.

But correct me if I am wrong, has she not been the Head of Drama at the 10 network for the past 6 or so years???? So it is doubtful she would have been involved if you so beloved ABC had of made Underbelly!

And amongst her accolades over the years involving dozens of good, very good, and brilliant productions (she has also had some very ordinary ones aswell). Even some of her productions have endless bouts of what you call unecessary sex scenes in them - see Simone debouvoirs babies, the secret lives of us to name a couple.

Get off your highhorse (or is that your Rocking horse) and just appreciate that this an adapted Real Life Aussie drama and not just another crap Yank / english reality bitch show. ;)

I am no ABC lover.
I was just comparing Underbelly to Blue Murder which happened to get made on the ABC.

I don't think Underbelly is shite. My view is just that it could have been done so much better. There is a difference.

Also my bad - Sue Masters didnt do Phoenix.

I would love to get both on DVD or find a download. Gritty viewing. It was mentioned at the time with Phoenix it did earn some criticism from police with some believing it gave away a lot of methodology for the time (surveillance techniques, covert methods, covert search warrants etc..)

And for me Phoenix had the two most full on sceens that were not fit for commercial tv. Old Bettys rape, and Peter Faithfull being held hostage. Give anything to watch them again.

you have to remember that the whole of underbelly is police perspective

so when you say 7 hours and something minutes of real story line,

its propley just 3 hours real events

and 4 hours police perspective!

Can anyone tell me the name of the guy portrayed in Underbelly with the beard and glasses who was in the scene (I think episode 6) with Carl Williams and Dino Dibra practising their shooting? I'm not sure he was named.

Its either Mark Mallia or a protected witness.

I'd have very little interest in this if it wasn't loosely based on true events. The whole season just seems rushed and some of the performances by this 'all-star Australian cast' are questionable, as are some of the casting choices.
Sacks swings from sounding like an Italian, to sounding like an Aussie, to somewhere in between, all in the space of two lines. And his delivery of those lines is of the quality of someone who is starting out on Home and Away or Neighbours.
Frankie J Holden s***s me too. Shouldn't be there.
And FFS, can someone tell Simon Westaway that filming has stopped and he can now get out of character???

this series had the potential to be great, if it was done properly. from what I can gather there was lazy production work (in terms of having things that were too modern for the year it was sposed to be set), some poor acting, and a rubbish ending. Seems like episodes 1 and 2 were ok to get everyone hooked and then it tapers off from there.
I haven't watched it but this is what it looks like to me from this thread and others.

Then why make sweeping statements?? It doesn't taper off at all after episode 2, you'd know that if you saw it.

Does anyone know what epsisode they are up to interstate?

5th Wed night this week. CH9 replayed the first 4 episodes last week - non rating period - a few people i worked with were glad as they were able to catch up with a couple of episodes they missed out on.

I'm enjoying the show, and yes the ABC might have done a better job, A La Blue Murder, but it's a lot better than some of the tripe the commercial stations dish up. IMO Roberta Williams is there for clown value. LOL.:D

Too bad she is actually like that!

I do agree though that there is definetly some satirical writing put in the script, just to lighten some of the moments up.

They should have made the season 20 episodes long, and spent the extra seven episodes building up where the Carlton crew and the Moran Family came from - i.e. show some throwbacks to the painter and dockers days, show the 80's amphetamine boom - didn't have to be too detailed, but honestly the Moran family come out of this whole thing looking like complete clowns who just stood around and got shot - the least that could have been done is to have some explanation as to why the Morans were considered so untouchable in the first place. Would have given the hits a lot more impact.

The latest (TV) episode was a nice detour from the normal stuff. A bit more women/people orientated than the "I'm gonna kill that ****er!" stuff it normally is.

As many (including myself :p) have alluded to in this topic, the biggest problem with Underbelly is Nine were clearly too cheap to put proper resources into the show.

Settings, props, post-production.

Post production? Unless the majority of viewers have some formal training (like you i assume) how would we know what is or isnt good post production?

Some further googling came up with - http://www.throng.co.nz/underbelly/underbelly

"As the events depicted in UNDERBELLY had taken place in Melbourne, the series was shot entirely on location in and around the city. Over 82 days of filming, 150 inner urban locations were utilised and 450 locations surveyed making the series as close to life as possible."

So much for crapy settings and props;)

After just having watched the last ep, one other thing I noticed I dislike about this show is the way they try and make every death really epic.

One thing that was awesome about Sopranos is the realistic manner they portrayed so many of the deaths as being "just business" and played the deaths in real time.

In underbelly, the vast majority of the deaths have super slo-mo and evocative music accompany, it really grated after a bit. Why not show some of the deaths as being realistic, instead of glamourisng everything?
