It's funny you say sa 267 because it's probably what i'm most behind in atm, and im doing materials, fluids and methods all this semester as well. Methods seems like a pain in the arse, surveying seems so ****ing boring so far.

Thanks for the insight and advice, congrats on the job too, pretty sweet ot land a gig there. jw, when did you first start applying for vac work?

lol. start catching up because its incredibly hard to cram for. ahh dont worry about surveying, the last lecturer i had was so lazy he gave us the answers for the exam.

thanks mate. yeh took a lot of applying and rejections. i started this time last year, pretty much going onto the career website on curtin as well as the career fair (which is next week go to all the companies that deal with civil therell be a few), the key into getting experience is applying to every where you go, i applied for probably around 45 places last year, got 3 interviews, got one job, the strike rate is appaling if your results are average. (i enjoyed life way too much, there was a time id be at leederville wed, deen thursday, running a muck friday, sat and sunday.) all in all if you can manage to balance it all you'll be cruising. it is a task though but as i said it can be done.

tip, theres a particular shortage in the resource and construction industry advise, if you dont like the maths yet want a form of management role get into safety, environmental, quality, risk or construction management. the money is pretty high and they are in demand everywhere. you'll def have a chance to be working anywhere and earning the coin.

It's a favourite of everyone with a "respectable" degree to pan Arts. It's just an easy ego boost to pick on someone with a lower ENTER than you.

Most commonly the jibes come from commerce students, many of whom who have 70-90 TERs and portray themselves as being future millionaires. Reality is they're probably going to be run-of-the-mill suburban accountants earning $70k pa, much like every other middle class professional out there.

There are definitely skills that an Arts course teaches, and teaches very well which can translate into any field. Never underestimate the power of writing a good piece of coherant writing in addition to sound research skills.

I know a lot of people who do commerce/science/whatever who can barely speak english let alone write a coherent piece of writing over 500 words.

Like any other degree, Arts is what you make of it. Would i recommend somone just aim to do an Arts degree and do it half-assed? Of course not, but the skills i learnt in my Arts subjects have definitely had an impact upon me.

And besides, not everyone wants to be a hot shot lawyer/stock broker anyway.

Rule of thumb with very few exceptions: if you love your work and do it well you'll earn money sooner or later. Regardless of the field.

Interested to hear what jobs can come from an arts degree? I have no idea and am willing to learn.

All depends on the major, something like English or Philosophy i honestly wouldnt know what you would do...writer maybe?

Im aiming for a job in policy development, foreign affairs or refugee/multicultural affairs and im studying a BA in Politics/ Public Policy/ Asian Studies. Ive put in a few job apps and with my work experience i think ill have a good shot since im not worried about relocating anywhere.

Dont listen to people who say its a complete waste of time as it all comes down to the contacts/volunteering u do while you study. It really is about who know not what you know.

I got a 99+ TER/ATAR, scored highly in English, am doing Science and even I think the majority of Arts is a joke.

umad?

Do any curtin peoples hang at the commerce club in 402? Those people have always struck me as annoying and seem to pro-long there uni lives by failing units

I went there in my first year a little bit with my mates - but after you talk to a few people and realise how douchey they are you'll never want to go back.

Girls are all rank and think their shit don't stink.

Very much full of private school w***ers too from my experience - I'm sure their daddies are happy to pay for 5 years of failing a 3 year degree :o

I also got a high mark and am doing law, my first preference. So no, not really. Pretty happy actually. Difference is i don't think i'm infinitely better than someone due to my marks/degree.

Most science grads i know work in labs and plod around, so it'd be quite funny if you were suggesting you're top class. If i were an arseh*le i'd say you've wasted your 99 TER on a science degree.

But i have no doubt that's what you wanted to do, so therefore you made the right choice.

I did next to no homework/study in year 12 and got 2 A's (both maths), and a TER of 88. Would have gotten a better score had I done physics.

A fair few:

- Masters degrees and PHDs are job material in their own right provided academia suits you

- Psychology opens the doors to practise

- Foreign language skills are highly sought after...combine this with even the tiniest knowledge of other areas and you'll go very, very well

- A hell of a lot of public servants have Arts degrees majoring in humanities... pretty cushy jobs

That's only a few ideas. I'm not going to lie and suggest there are more career paths with a plain Arts degree than say, a Commerce/Law degree. That's just not true. But the stereotypical "drive the Mr Whippy van" or "work at Macca's" slurs are usually just that, slurs.

There'd be a hell of a lot of people out there earning very decent livings off their Arts degrees.

itt: guise mad about shitty ter scores
+ phags bragging about high scores

One of each for me plz.

How is a TER score shitty if you get into your desired course?

FWIW I got much higher than I needed to get into commerce at Curtin.

Could've easily gotten into Commerce at UWA but didn't wanna go to a phaggy uni.
