Why is it that Australian footy fans are hopeless when it comes to chants and songs at the footy? The best we can manage is <team name> clap clap clap <team name> clap clap clap, which is as bad as "Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi" at the cricket. Alternatively, there is the slow, repetitive calling of a team's name at certain grounds, like "Syyyyydneeeeeeey" or "Eeeeeaagllesssss". Surely we can do better than that!

I think the main reason for the lack of imagination in our chants is that Australian Rules is generally a fast-paced game with so much happening that there is little time for singing. Still, I think it is also partly cultural because our cricket crowds are equally unimaginative. After all, there are quarter and halftime breaks and 30 seconds between a goal and the ball being bounced.

Overseas soccer supporters seem to have a litany of inspirational or humourous songs and chants to amuse themselves and I'm sure this must add to the atmosphere of a game. It's a shame we're not as imaginative.

Over the 100 or so years of football, have supporters ever invented anything better than <team name> clap clap clap and it has fallen out of fashion, or have we been boring for that long?

One of the reasons for a lack of anything new could be that with the modern seating arrangments, a large mob of like-minded supporters can't attend together. Even so, it's disappointing that we can't come up with something better.

Come over to Melbourne and stand near the Richmond cheer squad. Credit to the Tiger Army for keeping people amused with their chants (even if they do manage the odd tasteless one).

By the way, the most boring chant these days is the ever tedious "Carey is a w***er" chant......get over it kiddies.

I noticed that since moving here from England

But if chants also means hooliganism etc I can live without it

Do you really want 'you're gonna get your ****** head kicked in' ad infinitum ?

Since '96 the Hawkers seem to have gone feral and there are a few chants to be had

My favourite is the 'Olay olay Olay Olay Mighty Hawks Hawks Hawks' to the 'Hot Hot Hot' tune but we have to be quite drunk to sing it.

I haven't seen a replay of Friday nights game but I was told that either Dermie or Jason referred to the chanting as similar to an English soccer crowd.

For some reason, there a few large groups of saints fans that all sit/stand together, wear English soccer tops like Southampton's and sing for most of the game.

But I agree Daniel, it does not really happen enough.

On another point, the noise that can be generated at Colonial Stadium is like nowhere else. Particularly on the bottom level where the hollow floor makes it ideal for people to stamp their feet and adds a lot more to the traditional club chant.

It's good to hear that there is at least some variety around the place. Maybe it's mainly the Football Park crowds which are boring.

It doesn't surprise me that the Richmond cheer squad has some different chants as they seem to be very vocal supporters. There should be more like that. People say Football Park is an intimidating place for a visiting team, but I've always thought it could be so much more so if the people really wanted to create a pro-Crows atmosphere.

I agree that if chants mean hooliganism we can do without it. But the two don't necessarily have to be combined and there's no reason why we can't adopt only the positive aspects of other sports.

Now that colonial stadium has been built (although still rough around the edges) the atmosphere that can be felt in there when the crowd is an even split is awesome, this would be even better in a tight match as both sides would be chanting, I've been over twice this year and the crowd there Is awesome I wish we had a Roof On Subiaco we might even be able to hear the dockers fans chant (when they Turn UP, ( and yes I know how heavy the rain was here last week)

See Jod I can Be reasonable and not just make up numbers

One that is slowly creeping into the game seems to be

BULL SHIT
BULL SHIT

A chant that is used when they disagree with the umpire.

I heard the Melbourne supporters last week, strange because they're usually so placid.

I'll never forget the Richmond supporters in the 1995 Preliminary final either.

Melbourne supporters normally are placid but the umpiring was so terrible on Saturday night, it had to be said. It must have been quite loud as I heard it quite clearly over the TV. It is the first time I've heard it from Melbourne supporters. It is a regular feature with Richmond supporters though.

I don't care how pathetic GEELONG clap clap clap sounds, it would be great if the Geelong supporters at Shell Stadium could do it. Shell Stadium is about the only ground without an atmosphere!
