I must say, it's a very interesting stat - like that one about a team from outside the eight making the top four the next year every season since 1975 or so.

It's basically a statistical inevitability that a side has a serious shot at a flag after so long in finals.

2003, 2005 and 2006 were clearly the misfires that cost Adelaide joining the others.

The Collingwood team misfired in the late 60s and early 70s. But at least they made the 1970 GF, where they misfired (like the Crows did in the 93 Prelim).

I don't really envy mediocrity. I doubt anyone does. If you went around and asked supporters who's last 8 years they are most envious of, the Crows aren't in the top 6, despite making the finals 7/8 times.

It's a truly amazing statistic. I wonder where D_One found this one actually. It's amazing. As DT said, it's basically a statistical certainty that you'll make a grand final if you make the finals 7 times in 8 years. In fact, it happens 99.13% of the time.

That’s just it. You are resting on your laurels. You are quite willing to hang on to your 2-1 lead. If Port can’t surpass you, you are more than willing to just make the finals without giving the flag a decent crack. Just like Collingwood was willing to hang on to their lead over Essendon and Carlton in the late 60s and 70s. However they did have a crack at one flag but their lead has long since gone.

When I noticed that the Crows had made the finals seven out of the last eight years without making the GF I thought to myself “I wonder if anyone else has ever been that incompetent”. I then crunched the numbers and was quite surprised that no-one else was. Like Dyertribe I thought about it for a while and come to the same conclusion. There has to be something wrong with the way the club goes about things in order to accomplish such a unique feat. Collingwood tried but couldn’t quite be as incompetent.

You do wonder what is the difference between the Crows and the 114 other teams that have achieved the feat of 7 finals series in 8 years.

Perhaps they are just actually not very talented, and they are overachieving by making the finals each year. It would probably make the most sense, but then it doesn't explain 05 and 06. Maybe it's the perfect storm of overachieving in the regular season and crippling finals mental issues.

Actually, the whole destination disease theory probably sums it up the best. They focus so heavily on making the finals, it's their sole desire all season. They don't think about what comes after it.
