Tomorrow is NOT a grand final! It's a bloody practice match.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth , we won't be on top forever.

Our President and most others in the media introduce Dermott Brereton as "5 time day 5 time night" premiership player.

If it's good enough for him its good enough for me.

Such a wanky thing to do. Carlton won one in a spoon year, the cup and comp means nothing, to even refer to it as a final is demeaning to all other finals in all other sports. Robert had it right, it is a practice match - nothing more. (I still hope we win though)

Ahem. I'll let Rohan Connolly do the talking:-

The popular, in fact the only example cited, is Carlton's pre-season grand final wins of 2005 and 2007. The Blues beat West Coast in the first of them, then proceeded to win only four games in the season proper to finish last. Two years later, they dispensed with the Brisbane Lions in the March grand final, and won just four games again, sacking coach Denis Pagan mid-season in the process.

But that oft-recited tale conveniently ignores all the other years when what's happened in March has indeed usually been a very prescient indicator of what would unfold in September. And if the really good teams don't care about the NAB Cup much, how come they keep doing well in it?

The past two NAB Cup grand finals have both been match-ups replicated on preliminary final weekend six months later. The Western Bulldogs' win over St Kilda last March was reversed in September, Geelong the year before crushing Collingwood similarly on both occasions...

Etc, etc...

You would expect the good teams to generally go further in it then the bad teams, after all they are in fact the teams with better players and mostly a better depth of players. The Carlton examples merely highlight the fact that teams don't care all that much about it. Even this year is a good case in point with Essendon doing so well and I wouldn't be all that surprised if they win it - though I doubt they will see similar returns in the season proper.

Of course I hope we win, but honestly I'd rather win round 1 against Port than this rubbish, it means nothing at all... I just hope we get through the game with no injuries..

Why does it have to be one of the other?

Winning round 1 doesn't mean we must lose tomorrow and vice versa

Am I stressing over it no I'm not, but winning the nab cup won't hinder us come the premiership season

Not saying they're mutually exclusive or anything, but I really don't care that much about tomorrow's outcome.... I'll be happy enough if we win, but round 1 means much more

I don't care about it either. If we win I'll be happy, if we lose I'll just shrug my shoulders and get ready for round one.

The funny thing about this match is that my Essendon supporting friends are so desperate for any form of success that they are talking it up like it's a real Grand Final. Saying "Collingwood are the 2010 Premiers" shuts them up pretty quickly though.:D:thumbsu:

That's not entirely true a better guide for success is finals appearances the year before. Of the past 22 pre-season Grand Finalists 17 went on to play finals that year, but conveniently idiot journalists like Rohan neglect to mention that 15 of those 17 teams made the finals the year before as well.

Yeah what happened with Carlton was an abberation but NAB form more often than not means stuff all!!

Also I think Tim Callan has a more authentic record, his last 3 games of 2009 were finals he didn't play a senior game in the home and away season of 2010 but I believe he played all 3 finals in 2010. So that would be 6 actual finals matches in a row. I could be wrong on how many finals he played in 2010 though.

As I said in the main board thread.

Carlton ruined the pre-season for everyone. If it wasn't for Calrtank, people would care a bit more about it, because geenrally speaking, the teams who play off/win, generally do well in the real thing.

Hence why Essendon are getting excited about this season. It's also the reason I'm adjusting where I think Essendon will finish.

Remember, Tom Hafey took Collingwood from spooner to almost premier in one season. It's been done before.

If it was good enough for Geelong to spank us in 2009 and make a Cakewalk for the rest of the year then it's good enough for us.

Pendelbury is a winner, Dane Swan is a winner, Dale Thomas is a winner...so is Charlie Sheen but you get my point. They'll go out there pretty hard

I will be dissapointed of we don't win tonight. I'll get over it but I will be dissapointed and my missus will tell me off for swearing at the television - which apparently cant hear me. Next thimng she'll try adn tell me the players can;t hear me at the G.

It's time for Collingwood to start winning stuff. We should win tonight, we should win on ANZAC Day, we should beat Carlton and smile while doing it and we should win the flag. There is no flag sacrifice for the other wins they are all part of the same winning approach and complimemt each other. We have rested key players and we have given a lot of fringe players and kids a good run. Now it's time to win a grand final. We've lost enough so lets bloody win them all from here while we are good enough to do it.
