Thanks. But now it doesn't matter what my results are (if I go to UWA), Curtin is still an option, I checked the scholarships page and it seems that whoever they consider to have "demonstrated academic excellence" gets "a $5,000 cash payment per year to assist with costs associated with studying (textbooks, incidental expenses etc) for the normal expected duration of the degree for which the Scholarship is offered" which sounds good. Not sure if I'm still eligible since it wasn't my first preference, but it's still good to know these things. Cheers!

Yeah that sounds the same as last year, they had them for the sciences and for engineering, and i think the cutoff was you needed a TER/ATAR greater than 95 or 96. And i'm pretty sure, well last year you could anyway, that you can change your preferences after you get your results (i.e. if you get the score, you could still make it your first preference so your still eligible).

I'm only saying all this because its more or less the reason i chose curtin over u dub so i think its pretty handy to know when you're trying to figure out what you're doing.

Still deciding between Arts/Arts Education at La Trobe and Arts at Melbourne...tough choice.
Melbourne >>>> La Trobe in every conceivable way.

The Education course is very sloppy at La Trobe according to my sister and her various colleagues.

Melbourne's Arts Faculty is superior to La Trobe's as well.

Also, if you change your mind at the end of Arts and you no longer want to be a teacher, then you still have options like a JD.

Got a good ATAR but I'm really unsure what to do. Tossing up between Arts at Melbourne followed by a JD (I'd have automatic entry into the JD should I choose that option), Law/International Relations or Law/Arts at La Trobe, and straight Law or Law/Arts at Monash.

Any advice?

I know, but I just don't like Melbourne; I know it's prestigious and all, and that it's course is much better than La Trobe's, I just can't take to liking it at all.

I also want to do a fair bit of volunteer work next year, so the 1 and a half hour of travel each way for Melbourne might cut into that.

Most of Melbourne's faculties (if not all) are superior to La Trobe's, but the vibe I get from there isn't right, and at least doing the Arts/Arts Edu double degree I still have the Arts degree behind me.

Melbourne doesn't have an education course anymore also.

Yes it does as I am currently doing it. Is done as a Masters course. However, there are a lot of arrogant w***ers at Melb.

Also La Trobe has Melbourne covered in terms of social theory.

That's what I meant, one has to do a Dip Ed before they can do the Melbourne course don't they?

Would it be okay if I PM you for some info?

I was probably being a bit harsh on La Trobe so I should probably mention that the campus life at La Trobe is far better than anything Melbourne can offer imo. There's normally always something going on and there's no shortage of hippies/lefties to laugh at as well. Some of the buildings look like something that the Housing Commission of Victoria vomited up, but for the most part it's an aesthetically pleasant campus.

Also, whilst Melbourne has the best Arts faculty, La Trobe's is still very good. I've really enjoyed some of the Arts subjects which I've done and they've been taught with a lot of professionalism.

Finally and probably most importantly, the girls here are out of the ball park. O-Week will be like shooting fish in a barrel.

No problems.

Arts at La Trobe is very good.

Melbourne is the laughing stock of Medicine.

Hoping for an ATAR in that range, if I'm lucky I'll have a tough, but a good decision to make.

A lot of misconception about the JD @ Melbourne here.

Entry requirements:

Applicants must have either an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than law or a degree in law from a different legal system.

The three criteria for selection are:

* The score in the LSAT test;
* Academic results achieved in previous tertiary studies;
* The applicant’s personal statement.

Arts is not a requirement/pathway for the JD.

The other requirement is that you have to be an arrogant w***er to get into it. :D

I've only attended Melbourne Uni, although I've been to a couple of La Trobe Law Balls, and I would say Melbourne Uni stacks up pretty favorably in terms on social life.

There seems to be a fair few looking at doing arts at Melbourne Uni next year. Do yourselves a favor, and make sure you get on an O-Camp or two. From memory, arts, science, commerce, law and engineering all have them. 5 years on and I still maintain that Arts Camp '05 was the loosest weekend of my life. At least twice as many girls there as guys. Taking those memories with me for the rest of my life.

On that... the girls at Melbourne Uni are very tidy indeed. I can only compare to the La Trobe girls I've seen at those law balls and a few I know from around the traps, but Melbourne's are at least as good.

Forgot one of the best tips I can give you guys who are going to be studying at Melbourne Uni next year: go to MUSEX (Melbourne University Student Exchange Society) events.

If you struggle there, then you're the one with the problem, not the event.

I second the notion about the girls at Melbourne Uni

Anyone? Preferences are due on Monday and I still have no idea what to do. I'm leaning towards Law/Arts at Monash but it's so ****ing far away. La Trobe isn't as reputable but is closer to me. I've heard the JD at Melb costs way more than any other law degree.

Melbourne Uni has one of the worst social scenes I've ever seen across three nations of tertiary study.*

*Compared to other prestigious Uni's.

Will be starting the Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) at Curtin Uni, majoring in Anthropology and Sociology. Will attempt a double major end of semester 1 in either History or International Relations, leaning towards IR at this stage. After doing precious little for going on 18 months, I'm VERY surprised to be accepted. Not complaining though.

Alright need some help here, didn't get a great ATAR (70's) - deserved it cause I just didn't work hard enough... My goal was to get into Deakin's sport science course which requires 86- no chance I'll get into that. So.... I'm looking at some other courses. I'm juggling between Monash Science, Sports Science at Victoria Uni, Sports Engineering at Vic Uni (new course), Deakin Science, and Podiatry at Latrobe.

Can anyone give me some insight into Vic Uni? The place is in Footscray (which is a hole), and the courses offered there require pretty low ATAR's so obviously, not the best uni around, however they did build a 68.5 million dollar facility (opened this year) just on the sports science faculty. Is it really THAT bad and how are job prospects after your degree? Ideally, I'd like to do well in the course i do first year and then transfer to Deakin Sports Science or Physio at Latrobe. I know it'll be hard as I'd have to really do well just to be considered but I want to really give it a shot. If not I'll just complete the course at whatever Uni I go to next year.

My careers teacher told me to really look at Podiatry as she says its similar job prospects to physio, however I'm not really sure at the moment. How are the health sciences at Latrobe? Surprisingly Podiatry only requires 72... but I guess not many people want to look at people's feet for a living:o. I wouldn't mind it though as it seems a pretty stable industry and people seem to earn a good enough living from it.

Any help is much appreciated on the courses I mentioned or Uni's I mentioned (Deakin, Vic Uni, Latrobe)

Pretty sure you can go from Arts to JD. In fact, anything to JD. Law has no prerequisites.
