These people living on this amount are we talking with kids?
And mortgage?

I did a quick calculation recently for like a purchase on a $200,000 flat, I was looking at re payments of $1800 a month? There is no way I could manage that on my own on my salary. Would just scrape by when bills, food, etc are added on top of that. There is no way I can buy my own place.

Christ, I wish you could buy a unit in Perf for $200k, I could actually look at getting one as an investment and eventually move back.

200K is probably a very low estimate, or for a 1 bedroom tho. 250-300 is probably more realistic for a better flat or a 2 bedroom. Also depends on location too.

It's all well and good to say people that couldn't live off $25 an hour are materialistic, but if you've got s mortgage and kids the reality is, it would be bloody tough.
Honestly I need a partner or at least a friend to go in together and buy something. Could easily live off 2 salaries.

Suppose I could buy a 2 bedroom and get a flatmate to pay rent, but I really don't wish to live with a complete stranger.

I ****ing 100% wanted to buy one way back in 03 but was on apprentice wages and dad wouldn't help us. Would be laughing now instead of being screwed, although I shouldn't complain too much as he helped us make some very good money investing in speculative securities (real estate has always been too safe and boring for him..)

I have a 200k mortgage and my repayments are $1200 a month...not sure how you calculated yours.

I pay more than that though.

That's about the time my flatmate (the owner of the property) bought hers. She was so lucky too, was an auction, her mum made another bid (another 5 grand) was at her absolute limit there is no way she could put another bid in. Hammer came down with her last bid, then the guy who was against her said "oh no wait I'll pay the extra $$- but too late, that's illegal apparently.

So she got the flat, I live with her now- pretty good area too- and the rest is history.

I probably told you before but at the same time my friend that earned a lot more than me I actually tried to talk into buying a house, he got a 200k loan approved and even found an ok place to buy in Morley (probably would be worth close to 600k now), but then got cold feet because he didn't want to get 'tied down'. 12 years later he earns well as a plumber but is still battling with a young family to get a place over in Melbourne.

Without explicitly saying how much I earn, I do about 25 to 30 hours a week at a bit over $23/hour. I'm also a full time student, living at home. Planning on moving out with two or three mates in the first half of next year, and I've done a bit of rough maths but if we're all earning about that much we should be able to live comfortably while still having plenty each month to put aside.

There are people at my work, on about the same wage as me, who only just scrape by financially. There are others who are perfectly happy and wouldn't change a thing. I think its a case by case sort of thing. It also helps having a savings account or mum and dad you can fall back on if things get a bit rough. One guy made some bad choices on personal loans years ago, and is in a cycle of paying off loan after loan. Another guy missed a month and a half, unpaid, and wasn't fazed.

It's all lifestyle. Some people are content to sit at home after work and on weekends and maybe attend a movie/sports match once a month. They eat the cheapest cuts of meat, happy with 1 ply toilet paper and bu their clothes from Target (which is all fine). Others like eating out a couple of times a week, like a few beers, are members of a sporting team, play golf and buy organic grass fed beef and shop at the farmers market.

I'm not materialistic in the slightest but have other pursuits (both business & social) that take up all my spare cash, at this point in time I can't afford a house/don't want to live where I can afford so that's the sacrifice I make.

The concept of an hourly rate is foreign to me.

Hours vary greatly, but salary doesnt change. My payslip suggests it is $36 an hour, but the hours are so far from consistent.
