If he'd left it as it is, we wouldn't be having this torturous debate, and be wasting all this money on this ridiculous vote.
I disagree.

I think we'd be in the position of people trying to get married but being denied, getting married then the validity of that marriage being challenged etc.

People conflate immigration with international relations too easily.

Japan is our second biggest trading partner and immigration between the two countries is negligible.

Commerce is a two way street. The gulf states riches aren't driven by having oil, they're driven by exporting oil.
Stop the exports and they go from stinking rich to sustainable. The west goes from oil to no oil.

Which one you think has more dire consequences?

I still don't understand how that means that changing the marriage act in 2004 was necessary.

What has it helped, and what has it prevented?

The gulf states produce around 30-40% of the world's oil, and are small players in global natural gas production. The US is still the world's biggest oil producer and they go chasing cheap imports so as to not drill their own reserves.

Saudi Arabia is the world's second biggest oil producer and the bulk of their exports end up in Asia, not the west. If they closed the borders the big losers would be their Asian export partners, not the US and Europe.

We need them, they need us. If they lost their export markets they'd be in deep poop. See Dubai and how much they've invested into trying to create/attract post-oil industry. They know what will happen once the wells dry up.

Luckily Dubai is a little bit more socially advanced than their neighbours.

Definition > no definition.

The definition will change, probably after the next election. Until then I'd rather we had an established position of who can and cannot get married rather than having marriages that don't mean anything due to legal uncertainty.

Marginally.

Anyway the Middle East is just a collection of childish states who don't like each other for one reason or another. Western powers will continue to pick winners to their own purpose.

The Saudis are full of shit anyway. They don't recognise Israel but they are allied with the US and don't dare question their support for Israel.

A very tiny part of me hopes Trump becomes President and then stops the Muslims coming
I'm sure such a move would win him many friends in the middle east and the fall out from it would be epic watching

It had a definition, two people, he changed it specifically to stop poofs marrying. There would have been no uncertainty legally, because by changing the Act back to it's original wording gay marriage will become possible. Howard knew exactly what he was bloody doing.

The Saudis are barbaric and primitive yet are the head of the UN human rights committee.

Corruption of the highest order.
