Analysis Unprecedented: should the Crows tank their qualifying final?

And not one of these were our starting mids
Correct - That 05/06 team they were.

But back in 97/98
Wasn't Goodwin a small forward?
Edwards was off the Bench and McLeod was starting to get midfield minutes, but still more a winger?

What a ridiculous suggestion. Though I know it's just a mostly an anonymous thread for fun discussion, so no drama...

I think the remaining players would be annoyed or even offended that the coaches think they are a one man band, which is what tanking basically suggests. And that Rankine will miss several weeks and still be match ready for a hot and high pressure GF? Geewizz, come on now.

Obviously, they back themselves and make adjustments to the team plan, take the bull by the horns rather than surrendering.

I remember the Brazil vs. Germany 2014 World Cup Semi Final.

Brazil players holding up the shirt of Neymar, who was injured, during the semi-final national anthems before the game.

Acting like he had died or something, and their mind was thinking that they were not the team without Neymar, as well as disrespecting the player that was coming in.

Germany scored 5 goals in the first half hour.

To those comparing our side of 2025 to 1997-8, we had a midfield of McLeod, Ricciuto (98), Goodwin, Edwards back then.
There’s no comparison.
Winning a flag with this midfield, minus Rankine's difference-making rotations, would be one of the better efforts this century.

Don't get me wrong, the Crows have a strong side overall. But Dawson, Soligo, Peatling, Berry is quite a middling midfield line up. They're a very low possession/clearance midfield unit of late, but players winning their position everywhere else is getting the job done for the Crows.

How dumb is it that there is "tank talk" around what Adelaide do in the QF.

Finals are hard enough to win as it is, I would be advising them to win & get a home prelim.

it's hard to see them winning the Premiership without Rankine but ppl said the same thing about us with Rance.
We did have a long time to adjust though as he injured his knee round 1. was also fit for the GF too, freak in the gym but we didn't take that risk... not sure why the Crows would risk losing a finals game on purpose.

Crows have won the premiership without good players in the past, Ricciuto & Modra.

We have lost the clearances in our wins against Collingwood, Hawthorn, Gold Coast, Bulldogs and Brisbane. The midfield is certainly our weak point compared to the other top sides, however the coaches have identified that and built our game to be able to lose the midfield battle and still win the game. Our results have shown that it can work.

We’ll find out in the next month whether it can be done without the X factor of Rankine. Whether we can get Rachele back in time has gone from being perhaps a nice bonus to an almost necessity.

My post sort of covered that though. That winning most other positions has been enough to get by in those games. I think the midfield issue is one reason Adelaide have struggled even against terrible sides in West Coast, Melbourne, Collingwood and North Melbourne recently. It did look like it was going to cost them the Hawthorn game too, but to their credit, the forwards and defenders had their say again. Take Rankine out a few games and the result may have been swung though.

Anyway it's not a doubt on Adelaide's credentials. More just to point out what an incredible effort a premiership would be from this midfield core.

They won’t need to tank imo.

If it ends up being Collingwood in the QF (which is almost certain), my guess is that they lose anyway. The pies will play forward taggers and blunt their intercept game, and likely win contest/clearance and starve the forwards of opportunity. Adelaide’s forward stoppage game will be weaker without Rankine and possibly don’t score much if at all from that source.

The problem is they’ll then be up against likely a pretty tough opponent (GWS probably), and after that need to travel to MCG or Gabba for a tough prelim.

It’s a pretty long shot that they play four finals. Either they win the QF, or lose it and then have a tough road to the GF.

Good post. Our defence has become bloody hard to penetrate (except for yesterday!) and forward line has been dominating all year. Hopefully this keeps up for us and our midfield weaknesses don’t come back to bite us.

I've given this some thought and the answer is no. As much as I'd love for the Crows to tank so Izzy baby Rankine can play the Granny if they make it, it would mean the Pies win. All Izzy did was refer to the bundle of sticks that are the goal posts and got crucified for it because of Eddie McGuire and his cronies. Jesus may be on the cross, but his Crom apostles can seek revenge!

Izzy is apparently doing a Gunners-esk training block in Europe in anticipation of the Crows ranking the QF.

Incorrect. Training block.

Hang on, let’s separate the fact from the opinion in that post.

The facts are that he is going to Europe for a week, and will spend some time at a training facility.

Mitch Cleary’s interpretation of those facts is he’s going there for a training block to be ready for a potential GF appearance.

Is there a statement from the club or Izak that that is why he is leaving Adelaide?

I’d suggest that the fact that the best picture they could get of him is a blurry one as he sneaks through not wearing his club gear means maybe he just wants to get the **** out of here for a bit.

If flying to Europe to train was going be this big advantage, why is Izak the only suspended player to have done so?

Link please? I haven’t seen that.

I’ve seen this said:

“He’ll be back before the first final for the Crows. The Crows are trying to make sure he’s got all the support he needs over there with his fitness to make sure he’s up to scratch.

That doesn’t sound like someone going overseas specifically for the purpose of improving fitness. Sounds like the club are hoping to keep him fit in spite of being overseas.
