ESR started the u21 final as England won the tournament. Huge for him and probably just what he needed after the season he’s had, being involved and getting plenty of football into him. Hopefully gives him momentum with the pre season tour about to start.

Adams remains one of my favorite players ever.

People think of Centre Backs from the 80/90s as all being nothing but thick lumbering giants that hacked the ball away, but a lot of them were very good footballers stuck in very rigid tactical systems/thinking.

Tony Adams had all the attributes to be a raging success in the modern game if he were around now. People forget he was in his 30's when Wenger took over and really helped him develop to another level.
You've been watching football a while.

What struck me in that show was how good he was on the ball. I thought he was just an old fashioned CB - but that was as you said, because of the system he played in under Graham. Clearly had the ability to be a ball playing defender.

Where does Adams sit for you in centre backs you've seen? As good as someone like Stam or Thuram? Bit below them? Or a Nesta level?

Adams sits up there amongst the very best of all time - If he spoke with an Italian or a Spanish accent he'd be much more acclaimed.

He suffers from 4 major flaws when comparing to other players

1) England National Team Curse - crap performance at EURO 88, Not even picked for Italy 90 (yet someone like Tony Dorigo was) Injured for EURO 92, England didn't qualify for USA 94, lost on pens semi EURO 96, lost on pens round 16 FRANCE 98.

2)He didn't play for a 1990's "glamour" team that was dominant in Europe to be praised in media and collect all the trophies. A large part of this was because of the Heysel ban really affecting English clubs and the difference in money (continental clubs way richer than English clubs).

3) Most English clubs being behind the tactical advancements or the level of professionalism of the continental clubs. Most English clubs took very traditional approaches to tactics and formations, not allowing too many freedoms for defenders, especially under managers like George Graham. The boozing and the drugs leading to his arrest didn't help his playing career fitness wise and English footballers in general were very unprofessional during that era.

4) Pace. Adams wasn't a fast defender at all, which wasn't a massive issue on the mud pitches they used to play on against slower more traditional centre forwards, but as the game got faster and so did the players it became more of an issue. Adams best pairing was when Sol Campbell joined, Sol being fast enough to allow Adams more freedom to get further forward.

Wenger joins in 1998, you give him a 21 yr old Tony Adams and see what kind of player comes out at the other end.

Thought this was a great read.

That was excellent, thank you. I didn’t even know his picture at his Real Madrid unveiling was a thing, had to Google it afterwards and can see why haha.

It’s what I hate about society and social media these days. We are always so quick to hang people out to dry for anything and everything that we forget that they are human too. They forget things, they run late, they mess up, eat too much, drink too much etc. not to mention he was a bloody teenager!

This Rice stuff is ridiculous. We certainly take far too long to do things.
It's probably not even down to contracts now. It's probably the media/marketing/partnerships teams organising all the announcement side of things. It's a huge signing so they potentially are being very creative with the announcement. They'll probably do the opposite now I've said it.

Have only seen various clips and highlights from YouTube of the friendly v Nuremberg. Excellent to see Saliba back in the starting line up. Saka just doing his thing again.

A host of changes in the second half and geez Balogun should’ve scored. Twice actually. One glaring chance fluffed after a lovely through ball from Lewis-Skelly of Hale End. If he shines in pre season, you just never know with Balogun. He’ll be on the US tour with quite the spotlight on him, am sure Arteta will be paying close attention.

Do you think we've deliberately delayed Rice's signing just to annoy West Ham? It's something I feel we might've done. I don't think we were 100% happy with the hammers' conduct.
