WTF is Arteta playing at? Does he think he's some kind of tactical genius mastermind playing Partey at RB, whilst shying away from a defensive core of Gabriel, Saliba and White that was really good last season?

Just mind-bending arrogance from Arteta.

Hopefully this is the death of Partey at right back. Doesn’t feel a consider tactical switch, if it was we would have used it at least one time in preseason.

It is being done to squeeze Havertz into the starting lineup, he is being picked in price, not form. If Arteta genuinely wanted to shake up the formation, Trossard would be the one crowbarred in based on form.

Havertz needs to go to the bench and Gabriel come back in. And if we are going to make the monument error of selling Gab, then Kivior comes in to centre back.

- xG of 3 vs 0.49. ****ing hell. 9 times out of ten Arsenal win that match. But it didn’t happen and that’s entirely on the team.

- 3 times this calendar year Arsenal concede inside the first minute. **** off.

- Arsenal should’ve scored 4-5. Lost count of how many were hit straight at Leno. He’s an excellent shot stopper, always has been. At least don’t aim for him.

- Arteta is in a bind here. Of course he’s going to say it’s tactical. He’s not exactly going to come out and say “Gabriel’s head has been turned. Saudi Arabia have made him a massive offer and he and his family are seriously contemplating it. Their window closes weeks after the European window and there’s a strong chance he will go, so we have to prepare now for football without him and trying to see if we can play a back 3 and use two of Rice, Partey, Jorginho on the pitch because we are also short at back without Timber and still too many players to sell before we contemplate buying/loaning some defensive cover”.

- that’s my read on it anyway. One match, sure, perhaps it was tactical. But now, nah not buying it sorry Mikel. Didn’t happen it all during pre season but now all of a sudden the season starts and we see it deployed? There’s way more to this than meets the eye.

- Gabriel and Saliba were arguably the leagues best centre half pairing last season. Huge call to destabilise that. Gabriel also excellent in set pieces at both ends of the pitch.

- Vieira excellent. Could look back on this match as the making of him. Arsenal’s best today. Strong case to start him as an 8 ahead of Havertz.

- I say this every week. The pressure on Havertz grows. He really needs a goal and a big performance to sway the momentum on him.

- That errant pass from Saka to start with, I’ll say last season that goes straight to White’s space. Because of the rearionships he, White and Odegaard have forged in that ride hand corridor. All of a sudden Partey is in there, steps into midfield, White shifts too wide in a back 3, and the space opens right up for a mistake to be pounced on.

- I enjoy watching players’ body language and trying to interpret it. Nketiah, he was excellent when he came on. And once again holds his ear because he continues to hear around him that he’s not good enough. Loved it. Vieira too with a pointed celebration after his assist and winning the penalty.

- crucial two points dropped.

I think it is being done because of Zinchenko's injury. Partey is the one that plays inverted best until Zinchenko is fully fit. Once he's back, one of Partey or Havertz will be benched.

And because we're inverting from the right, Gabriel, as a left CB has to make way. Once we return to inverting from the left, Gabriel returns and White shifts to right back. That's my read, anyway.

What I will say, as a criticism of Arteta, is that he picked Trossard over Nketiah so that Havertz had more of a central role. He may have done it as a preferred tactical change. But I have this nagging doubt that he might have chalked this game as a win before we played it and took an opportunity to get Havertz into some kind of form... which, if true, backfired sadly.

My thoughts too. Partey being inverted from the right means we don’t have the White/Saka relationship and Partey won’t overlap with Saka. You saw the difference once Zinny came on and White reverted to right back. Zinny is also far more progressive in the midfield.

Trossard had a poor game by his standards and like Glen said, Nketiah came on and was super lively. I know Arteta said that he’s been immense in training so surprised he was dropped for this game in the first place.

Haivertz. There’s a good player in there. Might be a case of still getting the Chelsea stink out of his system but he really needs to start showing something because Vieira might have the Pep second season syndrome(?) where he now understands the system and the rigours and may blossom.

I’ve rationalised the same theory in my head - that Partey is doing the inverted role from the right because Zinchenko has been injured. And when Zinny is fit enough to start it will revert the same back 4 etc etc.

The theory falls away though in my head because we didn’t see it at all through pre season. Arteta takes those matches very seriously. Zinchenko was absent during the run of pre season matches - if he was trialling this Partey at RB set up we would’ve seen it. Instead, it was the Gabriel and Saliba partnership we’re accustomed to. Gabriel features heavily through pre season.

All of a sudden, the season starts, Saudi clubs have approached Gabriel, and he’s “tactically omitted”. It can’t be a coincidence. It smells. If this is due in part to Timber’s injury then whilst logically I can understand, it also seems a heavy overcorrection from Arteta to augment the team that much.

I can understand what Arteta is trying to implement, it just simply hasn't worked thus far
When we reverted to a system more reminiscent of last season, we looked a millions times more likely
When we have the ball, it almost seems like our players are confused about what to do next, giving opponents an opportunity to sit back and defend. Poor Partey just isn't suited to being in that role

Rice has been excellent so far, love the amount of work he puts in and links the play perfectly. Havertz not so much. Just doesn't seem to have any sort of urgency about him, kinda floating around doing a whole heap of nothing
Viera was fantastic after coming on too; he and Zinchenko made things happen

Not looking like a title contender at the minute but hopefully it is simply the new guys bedding in and the longer the season goes, the better we'll get

Title contender ? Come on
4 or 5th at best

Hope for his sake he can find a PL club, there’s a very good centre half in there in the right system. Tavares to Nottingham loan deal supposedly imminent, £2m loan fee with an option to buy next season of £12m.

Balogun expected to be announced today apparently. Still needing to find new clubs for Cedric, Okonkwo, Lokonga.

Tierney, Tavares and Balogun done. Lokonga, Holding, Pepe and Cedric to go. Do we dip into the transfer market again? A lot of talk about getting another defender. White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tomiyasu, Kiwior and Zinchenko are our defensive core. Feels like we're one full back short. But the versatility of those that remain might be enough to cover any gaps... Timber really is a big loss.

Having said that, Ruell Walters is being spoken very highly of from our U21s.

I do feel like we’re one short at the back, despite the number of options there. A strange feeling to describe. Probably because the Saliba and Tomiyasu double injury earlier this year is fresh in the memory, and the impact it had on the season.

That’s one of the reasons the Timber signing was so welcomed, he was quality cover for Saliba (with due respect to Holding). Arsenal have a knack of injuries coming in blocks, so whilst the numbers are okay for now, I’ve always got that nagging sense that they’re all not going to remain fit at the same time for the entire season.

And I also wonder does that have a part to play on the whole Partey at RB thing. Perhaps trying to shift towards a back 3 system and taking advantage of the one area of the squad where we’re well stocked at number 6 (ie, playing two of Partey, Rice, Jorginho instead).
