This is where I believe Gyokeres excels. Need to release early balls when there is space in behind every now and then. Makes it easy for defenders when they just pack the box. If we have them being nervous that balls will go over the top as well, that will make us a much more threatening side.

Absolutely. We haven’t taken as many opportunities with playing Gyokeres in. It’s an adaptation on the job, with how many minutes he’s needed to play so far. Over time I’m really hoping to see more of this.

Dowman played a beauty of a pass for Gyokeres which he really should’ve hit first time. Unfortunately the extra touch undid it.

I still think he looks like he’s running in quicksand 😂 but on the few occasions he’s had to do so, he has looked threatening. It’s no surprise Martinelli has had some more impact with space being there to run in behind too.

Yeah ideally he should have hit that first time but I just want to see the opportunities happening more. Can’t keep passing it around the box all the time.

Ideally we would have created more chances with who we had on the pitch, was very glad to see Nwaneri and Eze midfield pairing as the two 8s when I saw the lineup. For all that possession Arsenal enjoys, converting this into chance creation is a challenge here whilst having many new players coming in and the volume of injuries.

The early goal, much like against City on the weekend, changes so much of the dynamic. I would’ve loved to have seen Arsenal pile on a 2nd and 3rd that first half, however can see why they largely would’ve wanted control and to protect the lead. And just see the match through lately in second gear still.

Newcastle this weekend is a big test. If Odegaard is not fit to start I’m really hoping Arteta gives Eze a chance in that position.

For all the noise around Arsenal externally (seems like every dropped point is under the intense spotlight), inside the club there’s little doubt the players believe. Saliba is the latest in a string of contract renewals in recent years, a far cry from the earlier Emirates era where key players left to seek their ambitions elsewhere.

Arsenal’s work in contract extensions over the last 2-3 years has been phenomenal. Clearly Arteta is at the centre point of that and they believe and play for him. Saliba is the one that I probably had the most “worry” about, he doesn’t have the emotional ties to Arsenal that say Saka does (who I think will be a formality in extending over the next few months).

Saliba I thought perhaps we’d get a 2 year extension on, see how we go and perhaps he walks to Madrid or we sell inside his last 12 months, something like that. But for him to extend into 2030 is phenomenal. It’s massive. Out of all the key players recently to extend, this was feels the “biggest”. It’s a statement there that they’re in this and there’s a genuine chance in the next 2-3 years to do something special.

And he’s still so young, 24 is ridiculously young for a world class centre half. It’s becoming more common for centre halves to play well into their mid 30s so he still can achieve a lot at Arsenal and seek a big move later in his career. For now though, this is brilliant for Arsenal. The more I think about it, the better it gets.
