Ornstein reporting that there were no backup options after Mudryk. Therefore it was all a complete waste of time, and now we have two weeks to scramble over whatever is left.

Edu and Arteta are in dreamland if they think we will only sign players that are desperate to join us and only us.

Mudryk appeared desperate. For weeks he was posting about us, and all that time we were haggling over bonuses. If we made a bid that Shakhtar would accept earlier then there'd have been no time for the Chavs to swoop in with their insane wages.

It's laughable how this panned out, f*ck Chelsea. Serves me right for getting my hopes up, I knew once the Chavs pulled out of the Enzo deal they'd swoop in and said as much. But I still believed we'd get him.

Not too fussed missing out on Mudryk, I guess winning makes everything seem ok haha.

Our title race will come down to luck with injuries and avoiding mental fatigue given the shallow squad but the team just keeps performing. Fingers crossed Jesus is the only long term injury we worry about.

Phenomenal season so far, ridiculous if we actually win it. At the very least we should be back in the Champions League again.

I think that's the most annoying part of the whole Mudryk saga. It should have done January 1st. It was going on for months before the window, the player made it clear he wanted to come, FIFA made it clear that just this once, they'd turn a blind eye to deals thrashed out before the window because of the interference of the World Cup. It should have been all over before the window even opened, and he should have played his first couple of games for us by now.

I'm okay with not paying the stupid money Chelsea did. But it should never have got that far.

Exactly. If we sign no one, which looks likely, and it comes back to haunt us it will be simply unforgivable. We may never be in the position again. Edu and the club had to seal the deal instead of haggle.

We cocked it up, it's as simple as that. I don't buy this spin about only wanting players that want to be part of the project, and all the other nonsense that the club and its mouthpieces were putting out (Gunnerblog) following this.

I checked Ornstein’s twitter, no mention of no backup options. Where did he say that?

Quote from the Athletic podcast. It doesn't make for positive reading.

Arsenal know they need and want to recruit in January. Felix was seen as an opportunity and Mudryk was the one they were planning for. They hadn't been pursuing alternatives or had other deals on the burner, but that doesn't mean they couldn't now explore new opportunities.

Continued:

- Brings up the reports of Edu contacting Deco for Raphinha after missing out on Mudryk.

- Doesn’t confirm if they were true but does pretty much say that a move won’t happen regardless.

- Barca would want a “huge amount of money” to sell

- Raphinha is determined to stay, Barca was his dream transfer.

- Arsenal will now be making enquiries so expect links to come to the surface

- They won’t do anything that is detrimental financially and sporting wise to where they want to go

- I would expect them to strengthen this January but I do not know if they will

- Not aware of any midfielder talk

- Mudryk was a transfer that the club were planning to make.

- Felix was not planned for originally but was seen as an opportunity in the market.

Thanks for that, I had a listen myself this evening as was very curious to hear about what happened with the Mudryk stuff. The structure of the bonuses is ultimately what it came down to and how achievable/quickly they could come to pass.

Just a very bizarre situation, I’ve never seen a player so publicly flirt/twerk for a club and then all of a sudden sign for another club. Strange stuff.

Raphina I just can’t even imagine is anything other than click bait stuff. He got his dream move to Barca just 5 months ago, why would he want out already. Whoever the club is targeting next, I would imagine they’d want to keep it tight lipped and not have another public saga like this.

If he's legit on 200k a week, with an 8 1/2 year deal, imagine the conversations if we pulled off that deal (on top of what could/allegedly should be 100mil transfer fee).

I've got no doubt Mudryk wanted us but we were absolutely creamed on that deal. Tottenham can buy my child for 100mil and those terms.

Yes those figures are being widely reported, crazy numbers considering he was available for approx €25m last summer. The 8.5 year contract is purely for FFP purposes if that even exists anymore. Chelsea have spent almost 460m supposedly under their new ownership, madness. He certainly seemed to want Arsenal but money talks. Shakhtar played this one beautifully.

Not if he shines and our title push falters thanks to fatigue or burnout of Martinelli and Saka.
Mudryk is still pretty raw, he looks great but so did Pepe.. it’s crazy money and contract for a player like this with no epl experience coming from a pretty weak league, the contract in particular.

He’d be coming off the bench and who knows if he’d do any better than esr who we just got back or even nelson, it’s a gamble, he seems a player to develop not for the right now imo

Yep
ESR could have a big say into the 2nd half of the season

Clearly Arsenal were prepared to take that risk on the “is he actually that good?” question. With that price tag comes significant expectation, it’s hard to separate their cost when assessing the player’s performance.

The player doesn’t choose their price so it’s not their fault - however they wear the implications of the transaction. Plenty of examples. Pepe, Maguire, Kepa, etc etc. Their cost is always in the conversation, it’s almost impossible to disassociate.

Again, clearly Arsenal believed he’s going to be that good and if he is, good on him and best of luck to him.

Watching the unveiling, wearing a Ukrainian flag at Chelsea, it’s just mind boggling stuff. He didn’t seem to want to be there and I can only chuckle at the PR stuff about believing in their “project” (like Felix haha). Don’t believe that for a second - the money was better and that’s the key factor in the transaction.

I've looked at a bunch of the Chelsea Mudryk PR stuff. I haven't seen him genuinely smile in a single photo. Seen a couple of forced half smiles, and that's it.

De Zerbi says he's a sensitive soul, needs lots of L&A. I can't shake the feeling that he'll last a maximum of 3 years at Chelsea, and I doubt it will be that long tbh.
