The AFL, the 18 Clubs and AFL / AFLW players to donate $2.5 million to bushfire relief efforts Announce State of Origin match to raise further funds

A donation of $1 million will immediately go to towards relief efforts and provide emergency assistance on the ground through the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery fund.

A further $1.5 million will be donated into a Community Relief Fund set up by the AFL that will support the local communities in fire affected areas to repair and rebuild their local football clubs, including helping footballing families in these impacted areas.

The $2.5 million donation includes $900,000 from the 18 clubs, the AFL and AFLW players have contributed $250,000 directly from the AFL Players’ Association’s charity fund, AFL Players Care, and the AFL have contributed $1.35 million.

Additionally, the AFL, with support from the Clubs and AFLPA, will host a State of Origin match on Friday 28 February at Marvel Stadium with all money raised to further support the Community Relief Fund.

Victoria, to be coached by Richmond Premiership coach Damian Hardwick, and the All Stars, led by Sydney Swans Premiership coach John Longmire, will bring players together from each of the 18 clubs on the eve of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

AFLW clubs will further support fundraising efforts by hosting donation collection points at matches in season 2020, starting Friday 7 February, along with additional initiatives currently being explored with clubs and the AFLPA to be announced in the coming weeks.

What do we think, yay or nay?

I’m a big yes, but don’t want it at Marvel. Gotta be the MCG. The people will turn out for this.

I'm a big yes and before any w***ers start crying about possible injuries who gives a *? That's life.
We've lost Gawn Lever Petracca Brayshaw Hogan etc for season long injuries from everything to training to standing next to an opponent to getting kicked in the head with a football.

The bushfires are way way bigger than anything and this is a win win for everyone.

Marvel Stadium being considered because the MCG won't be available for football until about March 13, a week before the H&A season kicks off.

Marvel is being used for the cricket as well I’d have thought.

MCG being used for the Women’s T20 starting Feb 21. If the AFL can get themselves organised quick enough surely they can squeeze in the game prior to Feb 21st.

given the women’s T20, highly unlikely it’ll be at the MCG, won’t have access to it

Most of the decent players will pull out.

Can you imagine blokes like Dangerfield, Martin and Fyfe being arsed playing in a hit and giggle.

If someone is good enough to be in the AFL chances are they are rather competitive. Good chance most of the top players would love to go up against the best.

If the AFL decide to go ahead with it hopefully it’s going to be at the MCG.
Probably logistically hard to do as still cricket season then so MCG maybe off limits is my guess.
Got to take out pitches etc to get ground ready for football.
Love it if they could. Do it March 7 or 8.
Clubs can still have their regional practice matches whilst the best 24 from VIC, WA, SA and NSW play each other.

SA v NSW on Friday night in Adelaide and
VIC v WA on Saturday at G if possible or Docklands if not.

Or just make it a double header in Melbourne of those games back to back.

After the 8th of Feb the BBL is over. Given the Renegades season Then you can drag it back to the 27th. Marvel is free after that.
