can anyone tell me what the team line-up would have looked like in maybe 2000-2001? Before Fev became a gun? No reason in particular, just pretty interested.

How about Round 1 2001? Have the names but not the positions so I will put them around about where I think they would have gone at the time.

B: McKay Silvagni Manton
HB: Massie Beaumont Freeborn
C: Camporeale Ratten Bradley
HF: Houlihan Whitnall Rice
F: Hotton Fevola Lappin
R: Allan Koutoufides Hulme
Int: Culpitt Fletcher Porter Backwell

B: Bret Thornton; Michael Jamison; Dennis Armfield/Steven Browne
HB: Jordan Russell; Mark Austin; Paul Bower
C: Kade Simpson; Brock McLean; Bryce Gibbs
HF: Chris Yarran; Setanta O'hAilpin; Jarrad Waite
F: Andrew Walker; Lachlan Henderson; Eddie Betts
Foll: Matthew Kreuzer; Chris Judd
Rov. Marc Murphy
I/C: Aaron Joseph; Andrew Carrazzo; Shaun Hampson; Mitch Robinson
EMG: Jeffery Garlett; Robert Warnock; Rhys O'Keeffe

Personally I'd prefer to have Jeff Garlett in the pocket and Eddie playing through the midfield, but I think the club will go for experience in the forward line. I love the idea of Waite rocking a half-forward flank in a Goodes like fashion.

No, that won't happen. Not enough pace in the backline . Needs an Armfield or Russell in there. How on earth will Thorp get a game before Simpson, Hampson, Garlett and Russell or even O'hAilpin for that matter?

Just because players are talked about on BF, doesn't mean we are going to pick them up.

Try Round 22, 2002, the round where careers ended:

B: Cranage, Livingston, Christou
HB: Fletcher, Thornton, beaumont
C: Franchina, Eccles, Hicky
HF: Houlihan, Prendergast, Sporn
F; Wiggins, Smith, Lappin
R: McKernan, Murphy, Campo
Int: Hotones, Doering, Mansfield, Plunkett

2 comments out of this:

1) you can see how bad off we were then... we were lucky to not get even more spoons from that team

2) How good was Lappin to stick with us through that list and that rubbish.

That back line looks hell good.

Neither Henderson or Waite need to be there and can spend majority of their time up forward.

How can you pick Maguire ahead of O'hAilpin and in our best 22?

You're either full of the piss...

Or taking it...

You're funny trolls.

Andrew Moore would be more likely than Maguire to break into our 22 and get a game as a forward.

The difficulty I have in selecting our best 22 speaks alot about the depth of the side IMO

This is how I think we should line up:

B: Armfield Jamison Thornton
HB: Russell Austin Bower
C: Simpson McLean Gibbs
HF: Yarran Henderson Waite
F: Betts Hampson Garlett
R: Kreuzer Judd Murphy
I: Warnock Joseph Walker Houlihan
E: O'hAilpin Carrazzo Robinson

Armfield has earnt first crack at being our small stopping defender (Steven Browne will probably get a go at some point too). Bower and Russell to run and deliver out of defence.

Austin and Waite to swing between forward and back (ie. If Waite is quiet up forward, switch him with Aussie to try and get him into the game. If Aussie is getting a bath, throw him forward to try and snare a couple of goals).

Thornton to play third man up; sort through Jamison, Bower and Austin to organise the best tall defensive match-ups. Wouldn't mind seeing Jamison given a bit more licence to run off his man occasionally as he can actually use the footy pretty well.

Kreuzer and Warnock rotating through the ruck, with Kreuze resting deep forward.

Yarran and Waite to play as high flankers, roaming the wings and even setting up from half-back every now and then. Can both mark strongly on the lead (Yarran's still-developing tank might not allow him to perform this role for long in a game - he can switch with Eddie as he tires).

Henderson CHF for 22 games. This bloke will work hard, present, take his marks, kick a few goals here and there, and offer a great defensive contest. Is going to be a very, very good player for us.

Betts and Garlett crumbing, chasing and generally creating opportunities.

Hampson at full forward. Opposition defenders won't be too happy if this bloke is given a sustained crack as our go to man in the forward 50... Extraordinarily fast for such a tall bloke, I think he will be developed primarily as a FF this pre-season, with a view to playing him out of the goal-square in round 1. Will be a work in progress, but with the small crumbers to help with our forward pressure and the experience of Waite to guide him, I can see a 40 goal season from the Hammer, with the promise of plenty more to come as he gains further experience. His marking has already improved out of sight, it's time for the Hammer to explode.

Bench spots are tough. Houlihan's experience will be valuable, and he played some bloody good footy last year. O'hAilpin very unlucky and will come in to cover the first injured tall. Was great at CHF last year. Would love to sneak Robinson in there, and I'm certain he'll play plenty of games this season. Carrazzo probably a victim of McLean's recruitment (even though they are still somewhat different players); wouldn't be disappointed if he played though.

Can't wait.

Hard to argue with that starting 22.

Robinson may just be one to really surprise, possibly thrown onto a wing.
Indications from Ratts are heading that way already.

Grigg is the only other one I'm confident of seeing a lot more of next year.

There certainly is not much love here for Scotland of late.
I wonder if the fact he had a lot to say about Fevolas demise had anything to do with us happy to see the last of the "Party Boys" moved on?

Hadley?

I'd be more than happy if Grigg and Robinson played their fair share of games next season. Grigga is an interesting one. Has shown that he is capable of playing very good football, just needs to sustain that high level both during games and throughout the season. Knows how to find the footy, so if he can sharpen up his disposal a little he'll be a very damaging player.

Scotland has been an excellent servant but I feel his time is almost up. We need someone that drives us forward with more purpose off half-back, and for all of Scotland's solid service, immaculate disposal and good one-on-one work, he sends us sideways far too often. Been a great player for us though, and he'll still play plenty of games in 2010.

Hadley is also a bit of an enigma for me. Plays some of the most fantastic tough and honest games under the packs, and then completely disappears for a month (which I put down to his constant struggles with injury). With his lack of pace and one-dimensional game, I'm not sure if we could play both Hadley and McLean in the same side...
