Never understood that. Surely, he had gone AWOL often enough that he could be sacked outright.

Where is Hooper these days? Was at Broadbeach for a bit this year but randomly stopped turning up to training/games without notice in May lol.

Unfortunately not. We got as much cashback as we could be fining him to the maximum allowable amount, but in the end, we still subsidised his year at Hawthorn by a six figure sum.

Sounds just like him.

Every year this time we have “let’s get the QLDer” on our list.

While many have significant merit others appear to be just that a QLDer based fanciful wish.

Usually there is a significant reason why an AFL team would cut a player with a year on his contract still to run (see Proud, Hooper, Fevola etc...) The list for Brisbane over the past few years seems rather long and has made an important impact on our ability to manage our list to the best advantage. I am sure the club would be asking the question WHY we would be willing taking on another club’s problem for what seems negligible advantage to us.
The issues may not necessarily be behavioural. Issues may be just lack of commitment, appreciation of the requirements to succeed, lack of work ethics. However these also bear considerable weight in the decision making process.

Would Urquhart improve our list? Would it be wiser to give an opportunity to someone else that does not come with baggage? From a competitor’s perspective would it not be better to let the Kangaroos deal with his 300K salary for another year thus putting extra pressure on their TPP instead of importing a problem child and giving the Kangaroos a freebie. . We are not a charity set up for other clubs. Have we not learnt our lesson from our previous mistakes?

The Kangaroos would have peddled Urquart during the trade period (without any interest from other clubs) and I am sure would have been willing to take draft pick 299 just to be rid of Urquart and the associated baggage, including what appears a significant salary for someone who has delivered so little. Clubs are much wiser these days. Good list managers are generally well informed and intuitive enough to understand where players on someone else’s list are positioned. Marich is a perfect example of this. The Kangaroos were very interested until it was evident that he was going to be delisted by Melbourne. So instead of trading for him and wasting a pick and giving their opposition an opportunity to improve their draft position The Roos pulled out and now have the luxury of picking him up on the cheap in the PSD if they still so desire.

If he we take him we pay him base wage and the roos pay his 300k don't they?

Yeah they do, but much like Hawthorn should of with Rhan Hooper, we need to ask ourselves why have Norf sacked him in the 1st place?

If Norf are as cash strapped as they keep telling us they are, why would they pay out his contract in excess of $300K. There has to be more to it

I doubt Urquart would be of any value in a Voss coached team.

He's a negating half back/rebounding seagull type.

A crappier version of Bryce Gibbs.

What I hope the clubs does is this - Arrange for Urquart and his manager to meet with Voss, Kerr and the talent management team. Give Urquart a grilling on where he thinks he went wrong at North, what he believes he can change and what he will bring to our club. If at the end of that session there is any doubt in the clubs mind about him, we forget about him.

In other words invest an hour and a half in him and let him convince us that he has something to offer. Small investment posible large return, no real loss if he does not convince us.

Yeah stands to reason they will keep him on their rookie list while they are paying his wages in case he can overcome his injuries. Still wouldn't rush out to pick him up before their pick.

I quite like Urquart but as a matter of interest, who was the last player genuinely delisted (as distinct from traded) by one club who went on to make a real career (100+games) at another club?

Besides those already mentioned....it's an interesting list...

Gary Ablett springs to mind.....delisted by Hawthorn for dramas off the field...spent time with Myrtleford (family connection)....recruited to Geelong

This century....

Martin Pike: delisted by North after arriving late for a club function.... played 106 games for the Brisbane Lions..

Honestly, he's pretty useless.

His disposal might be good, but in order to dispose of the ball you have to get it first. He didn't usually do that. Yeah sure, he COULD improve and become a good player, but he didn't, despite North showing so much faith in him and paying so much money.

Could not agree more. Don't need, don't want another club's delistees.

Isn't Raines, Buchanan, X Clarke enough ?

Not sure about Urquhart to be honest.

Looking at where our list is, Urquhart would come cheap but a speculative pick. I see him as part of our Stiller, Collier, Raines, Hawksley brigade. I am keen on giving that rookie spot to a project ruckman and take my chance on him coming good, compared to Urquhart.

If we are looking at delisted candidates, GC would be my first preference.

I will put my 2 bobs worth in.
Urqs in the last 18months, since he had the Big O on his knee after the hawthorn game(2009) has only strung a 5 game playing streak.Has copped one injury or another.
Was quite surprised when not picked first game after a a good NAB preseason this year after a good preseason where he improved all his times.
Once he has strung 2-3 games together was always in Werribees Best with good disposal count.
was a sub against Blues but got crook the next week and didnt train from wed and so back too the magoos.
IMO deservers another chance somewhere.

Gavin would be in th top 50% on Lions list, get him in there or he will be lost interstate or nm rookie list. The fact he's on 300k shows his class.

Fev was on at least twice that. ;)

Based on your assessment would be in the top 3 or 4 players at GC so you guys should pick him up?

Suits the Lions list more over Suns and plus is a morningside boy.

High pick in that famous qld u18 team inc tippett, petterd, proud, renouf etc. I want to see both qld clubs do well, glad you guys picked up Zorko who will win your 'best first year player' award.
