THis has been one of the taboos of society, where women fighters have been used as a last resort.

Generally women fighters have occurred only under duress, ie, german occupation of europe, (french resistance), US occupation in the ME, Right wing/left wing military rule in South and central america, tamil tigers etc.

generally seen as something we don't like in the past.

the US wants to use them in Iraq.

Women are already on the 'front line' in Iraq - around 25 have been killed in combat there to date.

Women are fighter and helicopter pilots, and go out in convoys on the ground.

What they are trying to do is amend the rule that forbids them from fighting that may lead to hand-to-hand combat, ie house sweeping missions and urban patrols which are the norm for an occupation force, etc.

I think the Israelis had women on the frontline in the 6 day war.

I've got no problem with it as long as they can do the job to the same standard as their male conterparts. But as Bluemark pointed out, it would make great propaganda if one was captured in Iraq.
