I saw where he mentioned post match that he has the flu (not sure if anything was said about the issue during the match). I think it's pretty obvious his off court actions are why he is not fit or conditioned enough.

He's never been the fittest guy around and he's had a year that's been interrupted pretty severely by hip injury/surgery. Has played a bit of tennis over the past two months but not a whole lot. Brown makes you run a lot too - very strange player. It's not ideal that he cramps within three sets but I don't think it's too much to worry about. Will be better for the run.

Fair point, but it is a reasonable question. If he is to go deep in slams he has to be fitter. Look at Kyrios who wasn't the fittest bloke but has really worked on it and now you don't see him cramping even in long matches. People have to remember Tomic is still really young.

I agree, but think the hip problems are a reasonable enough 'excuse.' Difficult to stay fit with hip problems as you can't run, can't do a lot of core work, can't twist, etc. Coming from such a low base the months out of the game were always going to affect him more than the average player as well I'd suggest. He has to get fitter but it's no great surprise he's not there for this slam.

Not sticking up for his work ethic or anything - he has to do a lot more to convince me that he has the mentality to get the best out of himself - but I don't think it really factors into his fitness at the USO.

I agree and 2 or 3 5 setters will do wonders for him. He should aim to play as many tournaments as he can between now and January, has stuff all to defend and could easily get his ranking and his fitness base up. You only get fitter by playing matches.

Did anyone realise Kyrgios and Tomic are teaming up in the mens doubles? Could really be both of their downfall in the singles. I'm kind of hoping both get knocked out tonight, they are up against the 11th seeds.

Could be many violations coming

Must be trying it for DC. Wouldn't affect their singles (especially since I'm expecting a loss from both in their next rounds)

Well here is another thing I dislike about the US Open, they stretch the first round in to Wednesday. Completely unfair for any players who have to play their first round on a Wednesday. If they make it deep into the tournament, fatigue factor could be at play for those guys.

Hewitt and Berdych up second on Ashe tonight, plus plenty of Aussies in doubles action.

So what are the Aussie boys chancesin the 2nd round?

Kyrgios v Seppi - How has Seppi been playing? Haven't followed his results lately so not sure his form. Nick has to be a chance, but maybe slight underdog.

Ebden v Mayer - Can't see Matt winning this one, not the worst seed to face in the 2nd round however.

Tomic v Ferrer - Does Tomic have a bad record against grinders? I feel like he does. Might win a set, but he loses this match for mine.

Groth v Federer - Well done Sam. First grand slam MD win and now get to play on Ashe or Grandstand. Enjoy it.

Horrible form. Dreadful. Struggled on serve against Stakhovsky. 17 break point chances gone begging for the Ukranian. Can't afford to do that against Special K.

Berdych in 4 I reckon. Too much power from the back of the court.

Mayer's got him covered in three I reckon. Haven't seen much of Matty though, hope he surprises.

Groth can't rely on his massive serves to win the game, Fed will just chip them back. Might as well pack his bags.

Been cold more than hot lately. Struggling at challenger events.

Oh I agree but she can bash winners from anywhere....and it is Sam...she can make rubbish players look like Serena Williams...you remember Arantza Rus who thrashed Sam at Wimbledon lol

Sam playing kanepi. They've played twice, one win each. Can't predict Sam anymore.

Who does Casey have?

Looking forward to nick playing as well.

Stosur match being covered from 5am on fs3, then nick will be on after that.
First meeting was when Kanepi was very good. It was her and Kvitova that I couldn't separate back then. I reckon Sam's got her covered in straights today. Fingers crossed.

Lol what? She made the third round of Wimbledon and the 4th at French im pretty sure. And also won a match in Montreal 2 weeks ago...

Should have said barely...look at the players she has lost against. Barely won a match in the whole US Series. No surprise to see her flop early.
