Haven't read through the thread but has anyone commented on how awful the ball kids are in this tournament? It's like they just dragged in a few kids off the street and didn't train them at all.

Not the results I was expecting to wake up to, but what a fantastic result (and Novak is my favourite player).

Cilic has been in super form since the 4th round and nishi has finally got the self belief that matches his game. He should've beaten nadal at the Ao this year as well.

This year has definitely seen the changing of the guard. Not an abrupt change, but it is happening. The dominance of nd, rn, rf and to a lesser extent am is over IMO.

Ball adults. No age limit, most look at least 25. I don't mind the throwing instead of rolling balls, as most can chuck balls to the other end of the court in quick time. But the slack passing of balls to players just looks so lazy.

There just isn't the same discipline like at the other slams, especially Wimbledon.

wow. what the hell has gone on at the US Open. I didnt think the mens side could get any more crazy than the womens.

First Grand Slam final without Navak, Rafa and Fed since 05 Aus Open. credit to both men, they were very hot early on in the season but no one in their right mind would have predicted this.

Two weeks ago, I just assumed Novak v Federer final. but this is exciting for men's tennis. Both Clicic and Kei worked hard to make the finals.

So happy to wake up to this news this morning. So unreal. Been a fan of Kei and especially Marin for years, since they started breaking through in the late 00s, both some of the better young men on tour, great to see them both rewarded with some stunning tennis wins. Heart would like Marin to win, but it's a 60:40 thing, also love Kei and would be very glad if he could pull this off. I have fond memories of some of their previous encounters over the years, so looking forward to a fun final.

Freshest Slam final in a decade! Woohoo! For the tennis world, xmas comes early. Also imagine what this result will do for the confidence of others like Milos and Grigor. But I'm glad it was the more unsung likes of Marin and Kei that made the major breakthrough first, not them.

What surprised me the other day was that Cilic was 25 (turning 26 soon). Feels like he's been around for a long time. I guess he started pretty young. Great to see a different final!

Yes! I thought Cilic was much older, late 20s. What an amazing result for him. Now I hope the other players take note, and start to believe they can make GS finals.

Cilic and Nishikori are some of the closest stars to me in age (Cilic a few months older, Kei a year younger). Along with Del Potro & Gulbis, they will always be the players that came along in my specific age bracket (and are my 2 favourites from that age bracket), which makes this final particularly memorable for me I guess. Its the final of my 88/89 generation.

Whilst I'm happy for Nishikori and Cilic, I can't help but to think what could have been for Djokovic. When he looks back on his career he'll see these as missed opportunities to build on his grandslam list. He's at the peak of his career and really shouldn't be losing these matches. Federer result was predictable, had $$ on Cilic to smash him in three sets.

Well played by both. Both Fed and Djoko might not off been at their best level but Nishikori and Cilic both stepped up in their matches. Especially Cilic whose aggressive groundstrokes really were of a high level and then came up with some clutch play when he needed it. You can't really say this was an opportunity for his 18th slam missed because he was outplayed.

Love watching Nishikori play the way he did today, nice and aggressive and taking the ball early, did help Djokovic was a bit passive at time but Kei has stepped up a level this tournament.

I have Cilic as a favourite if they play like they did today but a 5-2 record for Nishikori in their h2h. Good for tennis to have a couple of different players in a final, might be better if Nishikori wins it for tennis but both are good stories.

Ehhh I so hope Cilic wins this. Really don't want Nishikori as a Grand slam winner.

I can't believe Cilic could be a slam winner. Extremely inconsistent, mentally weak ball basher. Many laughable matches that seemed to have stolen scripts directly from the WTA. I remember him losing 15 of the last 18 games against Murray (after leading 6-3, 5-1 mind you) at the USO a couple of years ago.

Nishikori has always been extremely talented. His smaller stature and proneness to injury were the main reasons I never thought he'd reach the truly elite level. He's pretty similar to Djokovic when at his best.

And if anyone still thought Fed could win another slam, surely yesterday put that dream to bed? He was absolutely destroyed by Cilic. I know his opponent was pretty much flawless, but that scoreline, which was bad enough on its own, was more flattering than Richmond's 57 point loss. He looked like a weaponless nobody out there.

Djokovic on grass and Cilic + Nishikori at the USO? He's not getting a better chance than that. He's settling on 17. Nadal has his target finalised.
