Won that last game extremely quick. Well done Kerber! Two slam wins in a calendar year.

All set for Djokovic v Stan tomorrow now!

First woman to win the us and aus opens in the same year since Hingis. Probably the first women to win 2 grand slams in a year to people not named Serena for a while. My guess would be Henin???

Pliskova only mistake was getting ahead too early. That made her think and freed up Kerber. Not saying she choked, Pliskova played a ripper final. It just that she need to be in fire to win and she couldn't keep it up.

It's a disgrace that nole is getting the same prize money as Kerber/Pliskova.....[emoji16] Great final and great tournament both players.

Apparently is was Mauresmo who did it last.

On the court for the award ceremony I counted one Czech flag, one German flag and 15 American flags. Sounds about right.
Americans don't support athletes, they support America. Germany vs Czech Republic? WOOOOOOO GO AMERICA, AMERICA NUMBER ONE!

Aus opens and Wimbledon????

Checks it out. Yep, 10 years ago. End if the era I feel. Been a while since we had a truely new world number 1. It has, especially since 2009ish, been always thought of that Williams was the true number 1. I don't think you find many who would think that now.

In all seriousness, how long has nole spent on court compared to the women. Must be roughly even.

I hope I haven't opened that hornets best btw.

Novak's run to the final has been so weird, it's hard to assess his current form.

While we have seen Wawrinka play some great tennis to reach the finals.

Deserved second GS win this year for Kerber. Still can't believe she has reached this point. Love her intensity on court.

Stan with the form and matchplay leading in to the final and with a decent h2h record against novak, I think he'll win in 4 tomorrow.

Congratulations to Kerber! It's been a great calendar year for her.

I really like Kerber, part of the reason is her accent reminds me of a teacher I had in primary school that was from northern Germany (pleasant childhood memories :) ). I wish her more success, enjoyable to watch and seems like a nice person.

Pliskova really did fall away at 3-1 up in the third but Kerber was the better player for the first set and a half so both had their chances. Credit to Kerber, never thought she would of improved by this much, she throughly deserves her two slams.

Considering that Wawrinka should of lost to Dan Evans (and by that logic Evans should in the final) I'm going Novak in 4. Seriously though, you can say Novak has been in strange form in parts in that semi but I think he'll step it and will want revenge for last year's French. I can see either player winning though.

the more and more I think about it, the more and more I think how important this win was. It is so great to have a new top dog on top of the WTA and indeed tennis as a whole. before this year, she was nothing more than a gateway to the quarters, rarely getting any further than that. heck, looking into it now she went 6-4 WL record at the slams in 2015. yet at the age of 28, she as made a breakthrough of not only a slam final but winning 2 slams and making 3 finals in the Olympics, Wimbledon and Cinci.

It all started this year when she came from a match point down v Doi to win in 3 in the first round. after that, it was relatively smooth sailing beating who she needed to beat on her way to the quarters. normally that is where her tournament ends, especially against Azarenka who favourite to face Serena in the final and who accounted for Kerber easily in the Brisbane final. after all, the head to head was 5-0 in Azarenka favour and Kerber has never shown much ability to beat the top, top players at grand slams.

Kerber destroyed her for most of the game. it was the sort of performance that gave us hope that she would be competitive v Serena in the final if she coped being the fav in the semi. the fact she won the AO was something no one tipped at the start of the week, let alone 2 weeks. and she was tested and passed a Serena Williams final where she threw everything at Kerber. this was even more impressive than beating Azarenka. she beat a top top player on the top of her game.

she struggled afterwards. Azarenka was too good for her in a rematch in the semis of Miami. indeed, big what if about Azarenka. i think we have all forgotten she was the best player on tour during that Indian Wells-Miami premier tournaments. but back to my serenade to Kerber. Sje kept on struggling in first rounds(see below), especially in the clay court season. it all ended with a tight loss to eventual semifinalist Kiki Bertens at the french. she did win her home tournament in Sttugart in this time.

me ages ago said:
she was MP down in her first game at the Aus Open v Doi, dropped a sets to Giorgi, Svitolina, Beck and Arruabarrena-Vecino(who?) and lost to Bouchard, Strycova, Zheng and Allertova(who again).

Wimbledon came and went. but in hindsight, it was the beginning of her 2nd rebirth. by getting into the final, she defeated Halep(a consistent theme in Haleps year to date) in a really really tight affair and survived her bad serving to beat Venus. In the final, she was outmatched and outgunned by the best Serena performance i have seen this year.

Olympics time. Kerber makes the final and is heavy favourite v Puig. gets absolutely smashed in the 3rd set. Cinci final. gets smashed throughout by Pliskova. If she lost this final, her new reign would have started with 4 big final losses in a row; 3 of them where she was favourite. instead, she started her new reign by becoming the first women, outside Serena, to win 2 majors in a calendar year since 2006. and she did it as impressively as you could hope. she defeated the player who killed her last match they played. She was tested throughout and at one stage looked gone. she played clutch tennis. that first set was decided by her not losing her serve when Pliskova had 3 different chances to break her. and when the game was at a pivotal time, she played several out of this world attacking shots, following her mantra of not just getting the ball back in. And she was fitter than Pliskova who started to waiver in the 3rd set. She has now overtaken Serena in the race this year and is the first player since 2013 to be ahead of her in the rankings. and unlike Woz, Safina and Jankovic, she has done it by winning not just a major, but by winning her 2nd. it just legitimises her new regime.

so this got a bit larger than i intended. the short version, i love you Kerber. Congrats on a well deserved 2016.:hearts::hearts::hearts::hearts::hearts:

i end with a quote from the day 10, Aus open thread, where she defeated Azarenka.
Angie you legend! She is so excited I am absolutely rapt for her!

Back when I was doing linesman work at the Australian Open for the first time in 2010 I actually umpired 2 of her matches in qualifying. I remember her because she was very firey on court, but a step above her opponents during the quallies.

Then 18 months later she made the semi finals of the US Open against Stosur and I could not believe it was the same player I umpired.

Good on her. Hope she plays well in the semi and final if she makes it that far.
now she is the world Number 1 and a 2 time Grand Slam Champion.

It's so good to see a new no1 in the women's game, it's been a long time since someone took Serena's spot. Maria tried but she cant beat Serena.

Kerber's had a remarkable year - winning two GS and making the Wimbeldon final. What a turnaround, previously she was never really considered a potential GS winner. I like watching her play, she's so committed and athletic. If she remains focused and fit, she can easily have a great 2017 season.
